Abstract: A new subspecies of Zerynthia polyxena D enis & S chiffermüller from Venetian Prealps is described and named Z. p. decastroi subspec. nov. The new subspecies is compared with nearby populations from northern Italy and north-western Yugoslavia. Introduction Since the publication by V erity (1947), except for some short notes by Sto race (1953, 1962, 1963, 1964) no further attention was paid to the Italian populations of Zerynthia poly xena. From then more localities have been discovered, where this species is present, both in northern and southern Italy. The authors, in view of a revision of the italian populations of Zerynthia polyxena (in. prep.), and taking hint from Z angheri (1975) and from the com parison of significant material preserved in their own and other private and public collec tions, describe as new the Z. polyxena populations from Venetian Prealps as Zerynthia polyxena decastroi subspec. nov. Derivatio nominis The new subspecies is dedicated to Dr. De Castro for his support into the study of Italian Papilionidae. Discussion The new subspecies is localized In an Intermediate station between the populations be longing to ssp. padana and ssp. aemiliae (Po river basin) and those of ssp. demnosia (Fri- ull-Venezia, Giulia and north western Yugoslavia). Owing to the extreme location and the short period of flight, the only records from Veneto were those of Peschiera, Lazlse (east Garda region) in the first years of the century until the 1930s (Storace , 1962; Wolfsber - GER, 1965), never recorded and considered extinct; and those of Lentiai, Montello (Zang - heri , 1975). Only in recent years the authors, thanks to the collaboration of Mr. Costeluv , have succeeded in examining great series of examples from the environs of Vittorio, Vene to; the checking of the material In the authors’collectlons, that of collègues Dr. De Castro, Mr. Caimi, Mr. Costella , as well as the historical collections in the museums of Florence and on Verona, led the authors to conclude that the Venetian populations belong to a new subspecies. Distinctive characters of ssp. decastroi subspec. nov. are: the marginal wedges of the forewlngs are shorter than any other ssp. examined; the yellow marginal zig-zag of the forewlngs are shorter and more compact than ssp. padana and ssp. aemiliae\ the yellow discal spot In Cu1 /Cu2 of a pear-llke shape, occupying all the space as far as the cell edge 452 with the distal©Ges. border zur Förderung rounded, d. Erforschung all examples von Insektenwanderungen of ssp. e.V. padanaMünchen, download and ssp. unter www.zobodat.ataemiliae examined had this spot divided in two, only In some specimens of ssp. demnosia there is the tendency of this spot to lengthen but never to fill completely the internervular space; the presence of a red subcostal spot in all specimens except one, while this red spot is generally absent in sspp. aemiliae and padana and in fifty percent of ssp. demnosia. In the hindwings the new ssp. shows, with regard to the other three sspp., marginal wedges and submarginal yellow zig-zag less sharpened; the black discal spots well marked and present in all spaces, while in sspp. aemiliae and padana the spots are usually smaller and lacking in spaces R1/M1 and M1/M2, in ssp. demnosia the discal spots are present also in these spaces but very small; the brightness of the blue and red spots of the hindwings contrasting with the deep yellow of the discus makes this ssp. one of the finest in Italy. Distribution (cf. map) Zerynthia polyxena decastroi subspec. nov. is confined, until today, to the southern slopes of the Venetian Prealps, on the outskirts of Vittorio Veneto, and near Lentiai and the Mon- tello. It prefers the clearings of woods and untilled lands where the foodplant {flristolochia pallida) grows. We received information (Dr. A dam i , pers. comm.) that some examples have been cap tured in the province of Vicenza, but as we did not succeed in examining this material, we, for the present, do not include it in the new subspecies. We decided to do the same with the old material from the east side of the lake of Garda, because the few specimens examined seem to be more related to ssp. aemiliae ; ssp. padana can be separated from all other italian sspp. for the presence in the hindwings, of well marked and sharpened black wedges surmounting the red spots; as regards ssp. demnosia, we do not agree with Verity ’s statement who considered it only a form of ssp. cassandra; it has been described by Freyer (1833) from a specimen from "litorale", which ment the coast of N.W. Yugoslavia; our examples from this region fit well with the original picture, except for the spot in space Cu1/Cu2 in the forewings which is reduced; we con sider the name * demnosia“ perfectly valid and representing well all the populations of the italian-slovenian frontier as far as the Istria, with regard to this we do not agree with Sijaric (1989) who considered all Slovenian populations belonging to the nominotypical subspe cies. We think that only populations near to the yugoslavian-austrian border can be asso ciated with Z. polyxena polyxena. Acknowledgements The authors are thankful to their friend V incenzo D e Castro for his kind help, to Mr. Cos- tella for information about the new subspecies in its biotopes and the supply of examples; moreover they wish to thank Mrs. Sarah Mascherini and Dr. B arto lo zzi of the Museum "La Specola", Florence, for permission to visit the historical collection "V erity "; last but not least many thanks to the trustees of the Natural History Musem of Verona.

In the western part of its range, it can be seen in open places along rivers with the foodplant Aristolochia rotunda. In the mountains, the butterflies can be seen in dry, sunny, rocky places, where A. pallida and A. pistolochia grow. In the Pannonian region, the species is found on sites with ruderal vegetation, e.g. along the Danube, but also in vineyards on sunny slopes, where A.clematitis grows as a weed. In Greece, the butterfly occurs in damp areas, as well as on dry slopes, according to the species of birthwort used as foodplant. Its range extends from Europe to Southern Urals and Northwest Kazakhstan. Its conservation status is favourable in Alpine, Black Sea (improving from unknown due to Bulgaria - new coutry in bioregion with large and strong population), Continental (improving from unfavourable-bad due to Bulgaria - new coutry in bioregion with large and strong population) and Pannonian (same as previous) bioregions, unfavourable-inadequate in Steppic bioregion (new bioregion due to Romania), unknown in Mediterranean bioregion (same as previous). IUCN Red List Status Europe: Least Concern, EU-27: Least Concern. The species is listed on the Habitats Directive Annex 4.

Summary : Studies on molecular phylogenies of Butterflies and Burnets have been increasingly frequent in the recent years, changing the systematics and taxonomy of these two groups. A full update has been performed in this work.

From May 19th to June 8th of 2007, the authors undertook lepidopterological research in 29 localities in Romania, several of which are poorly or totally unstudied from a lepidopterological point of view. 105 taxa were identifi ed, out of which seven receive special attention in the text, with comments on their distribution, ecology and conservation status. Polyommatus amandus (Schneider, 1792) (Lycaenidae) is recorded for the fi rst time in Romania after 28 years. We provide the fi rst record from Muntenia for Cupido (Everes) decolorata (Staudinger, 1886) (Lycaenidae), and the third known Romanian location for Pseudophilotes bavius egea (Herrich-Schäffer, 1852) (Lycaenidae). Lepidoptera DNA-based identifi cation was used for species identifi cation based on larval stages. This technique confi rmed the discovery of Zerynthia polyxena ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775) (Papilionidae) in south- ern Dobrogea and its rediscovery in the entire province after 80 years. Introduction Although the Romanian butterfl y fauna has been studied for more than 150 years (e.g. Fuss 1850; Franzenau 1852, 1856, 1859; Mann 1866), there are still large gaps regard- ing the distribution and conservation status of many of the species known to occur within the country’s territory.

Geodynamic and seismotectonic model of a long-lived transverse structure: The Schio-Vicenza Fault System (NE Italy) Dario Zampieri1, Paola Vannoli2, Pierfrancesco Burrato2 1Dipartimento di Geoscienze, Università degli Studi di Padova, Padova, Italy 5 2Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia, Sezione Roma 1, Rome, Italy Correspondence to: Pierfrancesco Burrato ([email protected]) Abstract. We make a thorough review of geological and seismological data on the long-lived Schio-Vicenza Fault System (SVFS) in northern Italy and present for it a geodynamic and seismotectonic interpretation. The SVFS is a major and high angle structure transverse to the mean trend of the Eastern Southern Alps fold-and-thrust belt, 10 and the knowledge of this structure is deeply rooted in the geological literature and spans for more than a century and a half. The main fault of the SVFS is the Schio-Vicenza Fault (SVF), which has a significant imprint in the landscape across the Eastern Southern Alps and the Veneto-Friuli foreland. The SVF can be divided into a northern segment, extending into the chain north of Schio and mapped up to the Adige Valley, and a southern one, coinciding with the SVF proper. The latter segment borders to the east the Lessini, Berici Mts. and Euganei Hills block, separating this foreland structural high from the 15 Veneto-Friuli foreland, and continues southeastward beneath the recent sediments of the plain via the blind Conselve-Pomposa fault. The structures forming the SVFS have been active with different tectonic phases and different style of faulting at least since the Mesozoic, with a long-term dip-slip component of faulting well defined and, on the contrary, the horizontal component of the movement not well constrained.

Among them four are new to Italy: Atheta alpigrada, A. reissi, Schistoglossa pseudogemina and Cypha carinthiaca. They are discussed with further 19 species considered relevant for rarity and geographic distribution. The biogeographic analysis shows a prevalence of widely distributed species. Among those with restricted distribution some are characteristic for the Rhaetian Alps, others point out the importance of the Adige river valley as a biogeographic barrier. Trentino, Italy Introduction The aim of this work is the publication of a large amount of data on rove beetles (Sta- phylinidae), the largest family of Coleoptera (more than 60,000 species described up to date), collected by the author in Val di Non since the sixties of the past century. Year after year, I tried to sample every kind of macro- and microhabitat occurring in that area, with the aim of representing the diversity in this particular valley, which connects the Rhaetian and Dolomitic areas from west to east, and the metamorphic Central Alps and the carbonatic Prealps from north to south.

  • Many Plants (Siliquastrum, Geranium, Mesembryanthemum Etc.) Were in Blossom, While at Zerynthia Polyxena Idaensis EISNER Allanca

München, download unter www.zobodat.at _______ Atalanta (August 1997) 28 (1/2): 35-41, Würzburg, ISSN 0171-0079 A contribution to the knowledge of the Papilionidae of Kriti Island (Lepidoptera, Papilionidae) by G iovanni Sa l a & M a u r iz io Bo llin o received 6.IV. 1996 Introduction The authors report the distribution, ecology, and systematics of the Papilionidae of the island of Kriti; based on direct observations during a spring field trip (10.-18.IV. 1993) and on the works of many authors (Rose , Bretherton , Rougeout, Tronicek, Rebel , Weiss , Leestmans , Olivier ). The first intent was to record the various biotopes together with the foodplants, preimaginal instars, and feeding plants of the adults. The first author, with the cooperation of his wife Donatella and his daughter Elisabetta , travelled for more than 2500 km along the whole of Kriti visiting the three main mountain chains, Lefka Ori, Idi Ori, and Dikti Orif and the northern and southern coast; during their stay the season followed the normal trend; at low altitudes many plants ( Siliquastrum, Geranium, Mesembryanthemum etc.) were in blossom, while at middle to high altitudes the season was delayed; despite a dry winter with little precipitation, snow was still present at the highest peaks; the diurnal temperature was, on the average, 21 °C on 10.IV.93 passing to 37 °C on 15.IV.93; a strong wind was usually present causing some difficulties in the observation and capture of the butterflies. Zerynthia polyxena E idaensisisner This subspecies has been described from specimens coming from Ida Mts., it has never been recorded again by many lepidopterists who visited the island in the last years; it is possibly a misunderstanding of the original locality or a wrong label of the specimens, we retain this species in the fauna of Kriti with great doubts.
