Dionne Brand, Austin Clarke, and Tessa Mcwatt: Blackening Canada DIONNE BRAND, AUSTIN CLARKE, AND TESSA MCWATT: BLACKENING CANADA by Paul Barrett A thesis submitted to the Department of English In conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada May, 2011 COPYRIGHT © PAUL BARRETT 2011 Abstract This project analyzes contemporary black diasporic writing in Canada, arguing that Dionne Brand, Austin Clarke and Tessa McWatt evince a unique form of double-consciousness in their writings. Their work transforms African-American double-consciousness by locating it simultaneously within both the black diaspora and the practice of Canadian multiculturalism. The objective of this project is to offer a critical framework for situating these writers within the legacy of both Black Atlantic and Canadian cultural production. These writers do not aim to resolve their double-consciousness but rather dwell within that contradictory doubleness and hyphenation, forcing nation and diaspora to contend with one another in a discomfiting and unsettling dialogue. These authors employ the absences of the black diaspora to imagine new forms of black cultural production, multicultural citizenship and national identity. Their works produce a grammar of diasporic double-consciousness that locates the absented origins of diaspora within Canada. Brand’s depiction of temporality and Clarke’s tracing of movement explore the continuities between nation and diaspora while re-membering neglected aspects of the history of black Canada, such as the life and death of Albert Johnson. McWatt extends this blackening of nation by depicting coalitions between diasporic, indigenous, raced and sexed subjects. These authors transform hegemonic Canadian narratives of nation by dwelling in the hyphen, while their evocation of memory, absence, trauma, and desire gives blackness new meaning and legitimacy. ii Acknowledgements I would like acknowledge the support of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council in funding this project. The editorial argues that “The tired, flawed debate over the benefits of multiculturalism … has been on a continuous loop since the 1970s” and that “the debate has become more fraught, while the terminology has ceased to have any real meaning.” As a result, “Multiculturalism should be struck from the national vocabulary” (“Strike Multiculturalism”). Orwellian in its call to strike multiculturalism from the “national vocabulary,” the editorial attempts to put to rest not just the “tired, flawed debate,” but also the language of multiculturalism itself. This editorial reflects a broader multicultural malaise: Smaro Kamboureli identified this over ten years ago as a form of “multicultural fatigue” that views “multiculturalism as a fait accompli and displays impatience with anything related to racialization and ethnicity” ( Scandalous Bodies 83). If Canada suffered from multicultural fatigue over ten years ago, then certainly by now the multiculturalism debate is dead. In the new post-national (Davey 1993) and trans-national (Dobson 2009) Canada of Russell Peters and Michaëlle Jean these questions of race and multiculturalism are surely tired holdovers of the 1970s and are of little interest to Canadians. Yet, like haircuts and television programs, the politics of the 1970s finds longevity in the multiculturalism debate. Questions of race, the rights and responsibilities of immigrants, the shifting nature of citizenship, all vaguely lumped together under the banner of multiculturalism, remain vital concerns in contemporary Canada. Indeed, if multiculturalism is such a tired and 1 exhausted issue, why does The Globe remain so fascinated with the multiculturalism debate? 1 How does one explain The Globe ’s contradictory and somewhat pathological fascination with resurrecting the multiculturalism debate only to insist that it be laid to rest? I believe, contrary to The Globe , that questions of race and multiculturalism continue to torment Canadian conscience and haunt public consciousness. Public discourse seems to thrive on the contradictory notions that, while “For many Canadians, multiculturalism represents Canadian progressiveness” (Coleman, White Civility 7), its apparent prevalence produces a perception of Canadian identity “as crisis-ridden, as a fragile and weak entity constantly under attack and in need of vigilant defence” (Mackey 9). While the contours and “flashpoints” (“Strike Multiculturalism”) of the Canadian multicultural debate may have shifted, this chronic ambivalence characterizes Canadian public discourse on multiculturalism. I contend that the “fraught” nature of the debate on multiculturalism is precisely what renders it meaningful and demands that it be revisited with ever more at stake in its rearticulation. This project focuses exclusively on black diasporic writing in Canada in order to differentiate between race and ethnicity in the formation of multicultural identities and to insist on the significance of the history of The Middle Passage in the constitution of the singularity of blackness within Canadian discourses of nation, multiculturalism, and diaspora. It must be asked again, for whom is multiculturalism bereft of meaning and from whose perspective does it become the means to erode rather than inflect and enrich national unity? For the black writers whose provocative and sobering corpus I examine, citizenship and community have been tenuous accomplishments at best and unfulfilled aspirations at worst for those forced into a hyphenated and interstitial relationship with Canada. The popular fatigue that The Globe expresses is shared 1 Indeed, Kamboureli’s analysis of multiculturalism fatigue focuses on Gina Mallet’s 1997 article in The Globe and Mail entitled “Multiculturalism: Has diversity gone too far?” 2 by Canada’s black population, but with completely different connotations and implications. Their ambivalence is born of struggle and alienation, of desire and hope, in a national landscape corroded by systematic racism and deprivation. The writers who inhabit this study lay claim to the space of the multicultural nation in a bid to unsettle the Canadian imaginary that excludes them. An exemplary moment of this ambivalence occurs in Tessa McWatt’s Out of My Skin (1998), when the main character, Daphne, meets her biological Aunt Sheila for the first time. Sheila wonders how Daphne responds when people ask her what was your hyphenation? I have a friend, a lady from home – she makes me laugh. She says, ‘In dis country

    The Giller Prize (1994–2004) and Scotiabank Giller Prize (2005–2014): A Bibliography Andrew David Irvine* For the price of a meal in this town you can buy all the books. Eat at home and buy the books. Jack Rabinovitch1 Founded in 1994 by Jack Rabinovitch, the Giller Prize was established to honour Rabinovitch’s late wife, the journalist Doris Giller, who had died from cancer a year earlier.2 Since its inception, the prize has served to recognize excellence in Canadian English-language fiction, including both novels and short stories. Initially the award was endowed to provide an annual cash prize of $25,000.3 In 2005, the Giller Prize partnered with Scotiabank to create the Scotiabank Giller Prize.     Dionne Brand’s Global Intimacies: Practising Affective Citizenship Diana Brydon “I say this big world is the story, I don’t have any other” (Inventory 84) Rosi Braidotti suggests that “The human has been subsumed in global relations of intimacy, complicity and proximity with forces of the inhuman and post-human kind: scientific, industrial and military complexes, global communication networks, processes of commodification and exchange on a global scale” (264). She argues further that it is the task of critical theory to track the “fluctuations“ of this new disorder (264). In this paper I ask what tracking these fluctuations involves, for the poet Dionne Brand who sets herself this task in her long poem, Inventory, and for the critic who reads her work fully attentive to the historical legacies of humanism and their entanglements with the humanities and the humanitarian.1 The CFP for this special issue asks two related questions that I pursue here: “what good is the study of literature?” and “how does the turn to ethics position literary criticism in relation to politics?” It is not possible to answer these questions definitively. In this paper, I follow Brand’s lead into registering the visceral force of the kinds of global intimacies enumerated by Braidotti in order to ask what these practices imply for the political projects of citizenship and community in contemporary times. I argue that to fully grasp the implications of how Brand’s poetry engages and is engaged in these emerging global complicities, critics need to attend to the dynamics of the experiential dimensions of its affect as well as its explicit meaning.2 “On Poetry,” the last essay in Dionne Brand’s Bread Out of Stone, concludes: “Poetry is here, just here.

    Ma, “Canada’s Façade of Equality” 11 Canada’s Façade of Equality: Austin Clarke’s More Mary Ma Canada is known as a haven for immigrants. Canadian migrants, their children, and their grandchildren live in the diaspora, a physical community who “acknowledge that ‘the old country’ […] always has some claim on their loyalty and emotions” (Cohen qtd. McLeod 237) and carry a fractured sense of identity through “living in one country but looking across time and space to another” (McLeod 237). Canada prides itself as a multicultural nation that champions inclusivity, diversity, and equality. However, it seems Canada’s often glorified multiculturalism is little more than “a media mask, […] a public advertising campaign” (McLeod 262). This façade seems to be promoted by Canadian media, government, and society to perpetuate an illusion of equality while concurrently “ignor[ing] the underlying and continuing inequalities and prejudices that blight the lives of diasporic peoples” (McLeod 262). In the novel More, Austin Clarke incisively exposes the implicit systemic and societal racism festering in Canada, while also exposing the psychological complexities of living in the diaspora. In More, Clarke unmasks Canada’s systemic discrimination which has long allowed Canadian employers to retain power while subjugating vulnerable immigrant workers. Clarke delineates this systemic racism by describing the limited employment opportunities immigrants, especially Black immigrants, have in Canada. In the novel, Bertram is an apprentice mechanic in Barbados. Upon his arrival in Canada, he earnestly pursues a job in his specialized field. However, “after two months of single-minded perusal of the pages that advertised hundreds of jobs, skilled and unskilled, that related to repairing cars” (Clarke 67), Bertram abandons his dream.

Graphic novels are bound paperback or hardcover works in comic-book form and cover the full range of fiction genres, manga (Japanese comics), and also nonfiction. Teenagers are believed to read less in their free time than their younger counterparts. The importance of recreational reading necessitates methods to encourage teenagers to enjoy reading and undertake the pastime. Graphic novels have been discussed as a popular format among teenagers. As with reading, library use among teenagers declines as they age from childhood. The combination of graphic novel collections in school and public libraries may be a solution to both these dilemmas. Teenagers’ views were explored through focus groups to determine their attitudes toward reading, libraries and their use of libraries; their opinions on reading for school, including reading for English classes and gathering information for school assignments; and their liking for different reading materials, including graphic novels.

    “I am being taught my own work”: Editor Claire Pratt of McClelland and Stewart Ruth Panofsky* One of the first women to enter the book trade as a professional editor, Claire Pratt (1921–1995) was at the vanguard of mid-twentieth century Canadian publishing. At McClelland and Stewart, where she was senior editor from 1956 to 1965, Pratt made her most significant contribution to Canadian literary culture. She worked collegially with Jack McClelland, the charismatic head of the firm, and experienced firsthand the challenges and rewards of Canadian literary publishing. She also worked closely with English professor Malcolm Ross, who served as general editor of the firm’s paperback reprint series New Canadian Library, and directly with some of Canada’s most prominent writers, including parliamentarian Stanley Knowles, journalist Peter C. Newman, historian W.L. Morton, novelists Henry Kreisel and Margaret Laurence, and poet Irving Layton. Unlike the majority of women in publishing “whose domestic and behind-the-scenes labour [as wives, daughters, and employees often] made the family business possible, or made it flourish,”1 and who typically toiled invisibly in a field dominated by men, Pratt’s interest in literature and art was fostered by both her parents who encouraged her to pursue a career in publishing.
