The Vintage Car September 2016 Page 5 EDITOR'S REPORT – Brian McMillan VISION: It's all about good news and proper machinery. Our Presentation Dinner was a great success thanks to much pushing and shoving by all the committee members. Those 13 members who have been with the club for over 50 years have seen many major changes in that time. When the VCCQ was formed 60 years ago I was reading Dick Tracy comics and thinking that talking to a watch was dream time stuff. I now have one that is way smarter than Dick Tracy's was. The current generation are watching Star Wars and Battlestar Galactica and thinking the same thing. In 2017 I have been invited to the party to celebrate 50 years since we built the Queensland Alumina Plant. About 1000 designers and construction workers attended the plant's 40th birthday and the organisers tell me they can now only locate 44 people for the 50th. I worked for Kaiser Engineers who were then the World's best. The plant was designed to last 30 years and put out 750,000 tons of alumina per year. After 50 years it is still running and putting out over 5,000,000 tons. All the drawings were done in pencil. 25 years later I did a course in Versacad and decided it would never catch on. 2 years after that I started a course in Autocad 10. After the third lecture I said in the office tea room the next morning that anyone who was not into Autocad would be out of drafting work by the end of the year. Fortunately they all started the next semester. The story with digital photography was the same. Kodak sold their patent because they thought it would never catch on. They have been trying to get back on the boat ever since. Now we are watching the introduction of the autonomous electric car. Telsa have already taken over 400,000 deposits on the Model 3 which will not be available until 2018. Ford and GM would love such an order book. Our Transport Department will still be operating stone age traffic lights when the cars are driverless. After that it's anyone's guess but mine is that it will be all but over in 10 years. A bit later in the SMART STATE. (I am oftentimes wrong). Manually driven cars may be banned from the roads and our vintage vehicles may be restricted as are the horse and cart. Many drivers will still be clinging to their lead pencils as the IC powered transport is put out to pasture with the hay burners. I believe our club focus should be on the important stuff.

    Appendix This chapter contains additional detailed information to supplement the main text of the report. Glossary of conservation terms The Burra Charter (Australia ICOMOS charter for places of cultural significance) defines a number of terms which are used in a standardised way in conservation practice in this country.140 These terms, wherever they occur in this report, have the meanings defined in the charter: Place means site, area, land, landscape, building or other work, group of buildings or other works, and may include components, contents, spaces and views. Cultural significance means aesthetic, historic, scientific, social or spiritual value for past, present or future generations. Cultural significance is embodied in the place itself, its fabric, setting, use, associations, meanings, records, related places and related objects. Places may have a range of values for different individuals or groups. Fabric means all the physical material of the place including components, fixtures, contents, and objects. Conservation means all the processes of looking after a place so as to retain its cultural significance. Maintenance means the continuous protective care of the fabric and setting of a place, and is to be distinguished from repair. Repair involves restoration or reconstruction. Preservation means maintaining the fabric of a place in its existing state and retarding deterioration. Restoration means returning the existing fabric of a place to a known earlier state by removing accretions or by reassembling existing components without the introduction of new material. Reconstruction means returning a place as nearly as possible to a known earlier state and is distinguished from restoration by the introduction of new material into the fabric.

  • Old Museum Building Conservation Management Plan
    The history of the building This chapter traces the history of the Old Museum Building. Its purpose is to sketch the major events in the story of the place as an introduction to the discussion of significance later in this report. Originally built as an exhibition hall and concert hall in 1891, the building sits on the site of an earlier building that burned down in 1888. In the late 1890s the exhibition hall was converted to accommodate the Queensland Museum which transferred to the building in 1899. The concert hall continued as the venue for performances and meetings until 1930 when it was modified to house the Queensland Art Gallery. In 1973 the Art Gallery moved away and the museum took over the whole building. In 1986 the museum moved to new purpose-built accommodation in the Queensland Cultural Centre on the south bank of the Brisbane River opposite the city centre. Precursors The site on which the Exhibition Building stands was occupied by Aboriginal people before and after European settlement. The Brisbane area was inhabited by people who spoke the Turrbal language and they have been described in terms of five identifiable clans, although other clans no doubt lived in the area.1 The “Duke of York’s” clan occupied the Brisbane metropolitan area on the north side of the river. Much of the little that is now known about Aboriginal occupation of the area is drawn from the book Tom Petrie’s reminiscences of early Queensland, written by Constance Campbell Petrie in 1904 and based on her father’s recollections told to her many years after the events.
