Papadopoulos, Chair This research project examines the appearance and proliferation of some of the earliest cremation burials in Europe in the context of the prehistoric north Aegean. Using archaeological and osteological evidence from the region between the Pindos mountains and Evros river in northern Greece, this study examines the formation of death rituals, the role of landscape in the emergence of cemeteries, and expressions of social identities against the backdrop of diachronic change and synchronic variation. I draw on a rich and diverse record of mortuary practices to examine the co-existence of cremation and inhumation rites from the beginnings of farming in the Neolithic period -

Macedonia in Greek Administration
Preface When in 1821 Greeks started their revolt against the Ottoman Empire and fought for an independent state they had two major ideological issues to deal with: the identity of the new state and its future borders. If Hellas (Ελλάς) was the appropriate name for Modern Greece and ancient glory the most valuable argument for Greek independence, then how could Macedonia been kept apart? After all it was an integral part of Greek ancient history, which had nourished every single generation of educated people—not only Greeks—even before the war of Greek independence. The legendary figure of Alexander the Great had surfed smoothly over centuries of ignorance escorted by powerful myths and tales to find its appropriate position in the last part of 19th century, ancient history textbooks. They were the chapters of the Macedonian Hegemony and the Hellenistic period (4th and 3rd centuries B.C.), which had brought Greek culture to the frontiers of the then known world. Ancient History proved a very solid and enduring foundation for the modern Greek state. In this context, in the last quarter of the 19th century the case of Macedonia, this ill-defined region, was regarded as the final frontier of Hellenism, which Greece had to defend against the Slavs, if it was to survive as a state and not to end up as a sad caricature of Ancient Hellas. The romantic fight of the Greeks for Macedonia—in fact for the littoral part of it—created its own legend, which was shaped through a series of declared and undeclared wars from the 1878 Eastern Crisis to World War II. -

Introduction On June 20, 1978, Thessaloniki, the largest and most densely populated city in Northern Greece, experienced the devastating consequences of an Mw=6.4 earthquake, whose epicenter was located about 30 km east-northeast from the centre of the city. This earthquake, herewith referred to as the “Stivos earthquake”, was the first one to hit a modern Greek city and therefore alerted public authorities and the local scientific community about the necessity of increasing the preparedness against such catastrophic events. As a consequence, since 1978 a large number of studies has been conducted on the characteristics of the last catastrophic earthquake, the regional tectonics and other elements contributing to the overall seismic risk in the broader area of the metropolitan city of Thessaloniki. For an extended list of relative publications the reader is referred to the recent works of Stiros and Drakos (2000), Tranos et al. (2003), Theodulidis et al. (2005) and Roumelioti et al., (2005) and the references therein. Nowadays, the most challenging target for seismologists and earthquake engineers is the incorporation of the gained knowledge on the seismotectonics of the area and the geotechnical characteristics of the geological formations of Thessaloniki, into realistic earthquake scenarios that could contribute to effective planning for and mitigation of earthquake hazard in the wider metropolitan area. Simulation of strong ground motion from scenario earthquakes provides a perspective on the plausible levels of ground shaking within the area of interest and subsequently on the seismic impact and helps public authorities, emergency responders and scientists to better design and coordinate an emergency plan for a future earthquake. -

The areas of the road network that are to become inaccessible either due to partial collapse of buildings or due to destruction of the road axes by rupture zones, are detected. The inaccessible parts are determined for the cases of three earthquake scenarios using the values of the Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA), which were calculated for about 6000 points over the UAT, as well as spatial overlay tools of a GIS. -

Papadopoulos, Chair This research project examines the appearance and proliferation of some of the earliest cremation burials in Europe in the context of the prehistoric north Aegean. Using archaeological and osteological evidence from the region between the Pindos mountains and Evros river in northern Greece, this study examines the formation of death rituals, the role of landscape in the emergence of cemeteries, and expressions of social identities against the backdrop of diachronic change and synchronic variation. I draw on a rich and diverse record of mortuary practices to examine the co-existence of cremation and inhumation rites from the beginnings of farming in the Neolithic period to the adoption of the Greek alphabet by the eighth century BCE or earlier. Based on my review of the evidence, I also offer suggestions regarding: 1) why cremation is adopted so early in the Neolithic north Aegean, and essentially nowhere else in contemporary southeast Europe and the Near East; 2) why cremation perseveres and re-emerges as a popular burial rite in ii the Early Iron Age in this region; and 3) whether cremation endured in this region in association with kinship-based states attested in the region later in antiquity, or on the basis of social status, gender, age, or personal preference. -
