The Los Medaños Member of the Permian (Ochoan) Rustler Formation by Dennis W. Powers, HC 12 Box 87, Anthony, TX 79821; and Robert M. Holt, Dept. of Earth and Environmental Science, New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, Socorro, NM 87801 Abstract We propose Los Medaños Member as the formal name for the lower part of the Upper Permian (Ochoan) Rustler Formation, below R31E the Culebra Dolomite Member, in the north- ern Delaware Basin. The stratotype is at the exhaust shaft of the Waste Isolation Pilot Exhaust Plant (WIPP) site in sec 20 T22S R31E, Eddy shaft T22S County, New Mexico. The name is derived from the nearby sand dune field (Los Meda- ños) and the quadrangle map of the same WIPP site name. Cores of the Los Medaños from WIPP studies correspond to the exhaust-shaft Los Medanos~ geology, though larger features revealed in T23S the shaft must be inferred. Geophysical log signatures permit regional correlations and interpretation of lithology. Outcrops of this Midland unit are poorly exposed and have been little Basin studied. January 2009 Parks and Recreation in the United States The National Park System Margaret Walls BACKGROUNDER 1616 P St. NW Washington, DC 20036 202-328-5000 www.rff.org Resources for the Future Walls Parks and Recreation in the United States: The National Park System Margaret Walls∗ Introduction The National Park Service, a bureau within the U.S. Department of the Interior, is responsible for managing 391 sites—including national monuments, national recreation areas, national rivers, national parks, various types of historic sites, and other categories of protected lands—that cover 84 million acres. Some of the sites, such as Yellowstone National Park and the Grand Canyon, are viewed as iconic symbols of America. But the National Park Service also manages a number of small historical sites, military parks, scenic parkways, the National Mall in Washington, DC, and a variety of other protected locations. In this backgrounder, we provide a brief history of the Park Service, show trends in land acreage managed by the bureau and visitation at National Park Service sites over time, show funding trends, and present the challenges and issues facing the Park Service today. History National parks were created before there was a National Park Service. President Ulysses S. Grant first set aside land for a “public park” in 1872 with the founding of Yellowstone. Yosemite, General Grant (now part of Kings Canyon), and Sequoia National Parks in California were created in 1890, and nine years later Mount Rainier National Park was set aside in Washington. With passage of the Antiquities Act in 1906, the President was granted authority to declare historic landmarks, historic and prehistoric structures, and sites of scientific interest as national monuments. -

APPENDIX B HYDROGEOLOGIC AND SOILS FACTORS INFLUENCING LEAKAGE POTENTIAL FROM THE CONCHAS-HUDSON CANAL SYSTEM, ARCH HURLEY CONSERVANCY DISTRICT, QUAY AND SAN MIGUEL COUNTIES, NEW MEXICO by John W. Kennedy, GIS Specialist/Hydrogeologist New Mexico Water Resources Research Institute October 2005 INTRODUCTION The following discussion of geology and soils in the Arch Hurley Conservancy District (District) study area introduces the major landscape features (landforms) and surficial geologic units of the Conchas-Hudson Canal system between Conchas Reservoir in San Miguel County and the eastern part of the Tucumcari (irrigation) Project in Quay County. Emphasis is on hydrogeologic and soils factors that influence leakage from not only the canal corridor but also the complex network of laterals, ditches and field- drainage features that characterize irrigated parts of the District. Of particular importance is the historic role played by Project operations (since 1946) in recharge of the shallow- alluvial and bedrock (Entrada Sandstone) aquifer systems of the Tucumcari Metropolitan area. The latter topic was first addressed in detail by Trauger and Bushman (1964) and is only briefly covered here. 112 The geologic setting of the entire study area is the subject of a recent comprehensive review paper that was written specifically for a general audience by Adrian Hunt (Director, New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science; 1998). Hydrogeologic characteristics of major stratigraphic units exposed or shallowly buried along the canal corridor are summarized in Table B1, which also includes a list of supporting references. Distribution patterns and leakage potential of surficial-geologic units and soils are summarized in Tables B2-B5 in Attachment B1 to this Appendix. -

The bridge and its plaza receive millions of visitors annually. Situated at the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula, the Presidio has been part of Golden Gate National Recreation Area since 1994. For more than 200 years, the Presidio area was used as a military base, first by Spain in the late 1700s, briefly by Mexico in the 1800s, and by the United States from 1846 onward. Golden Gate National Recreation Area is widely known for its rich natural resources as well. The park helps protect parts of 19 separate ecosystems and numerous watersheds. Additionally, geochronology can be used to correlate sections across the marine and terrestrial realm and around the world. Changes in ecosystems or isotopic composition of deposited rocks will be influenced by local effects, but can also have a global signal. With geochronlogy, the same time interval can be found in distant regions, and if a phenomenon (e.g. a carbon isotope excursion) was global in scope, many different localities each from the same time interval would show the same signal. Here I present high-resolution uranium-lead geochronology pertaining to two mass ex- tinctions: the Cretaceous-Paleogene mass extinction (around 66 million years ago, Ma) and the Permo-Triassic mass extinction (around 252 Ma). -
