Champion Jack Dupree Two Classic Albums - Champion Jack Dupree This album, Blues From The Gutter, (recorded in 1958) is one of the better blues albums from that whole 1950's era.But it's never gotten the widespread acclaim it certainly deserves. Why?Who knows. So I think it's interesting (and great!) that it's now reissued with newly remastered sound, along with another album, Champion Jack's Natural & Soulful Blues (1959), plus a mess of period 45 rpm singles. The sound is a bit better than my old CD from years ago, and still has some of that warm vinyl sound like my original vinyl album from many years ago.The booklet has a two page essay on Dupree plus recording information for all tracks. Also here are the liner notes from the vinyl album--a nice touch. All in all, this is a set that blues fans need to hear. Blues In The Gutter is Dupree at his best. His piano playing augments his great vocals perfectly. And the small combo that accompanies him is just right--especially Pete Brown on alto sax, and Ennis Lowery (Larry Dale) on guitar. Both musicians lay down some fine and sometimes scorching solos that elevate this album even higher. Most of the songs (written by Dupree but you'll recognize some that were written by others) deal with drugs, disease, and death, but Dupree doesn't let things sink into the dark side of life.Rather he sings about overcoming obstacles in life, all the while playing some fine blues. This album is a classic. The other album here (Natural & Soulful Blues), recorded in 1959 in London on his first trip there isn't quite up to the high standards of the above album.Tune for tune it's just not as strong, but there'sseveral songs that keep this album from anonymity.English blues performer Alexis Korner plays guitar on four tracks along with Jack Fallon on bass. And while Korner is a good guitarist, he sometimes stays to close to a strict, academic blues sound, while Fallon occasionally gets in the way of the tune itself. But it's nice to hear both these fine musicians helping out Dupree during this period. The rest of the tracks feature Dupree. This set is thought of more highly in England than in the U.S..Many English blues fans know this was Dupree's first album he recorded in Europe before he moved there permanently. The last three tracks on Disc 1 and the whole of Disc 2 are taken up withmany 45 rpm singles Dupree recorded for a number of labels. These sides date from(possibly) 1945 up through 1957, and were released by the Continental, Red Robin, King, Groove, and VIK labels.Plus the last three tracks on this disc are alternates of sides (included here)released on the Groove and VIK labels in 1957.Sidemen include Sonny Terry (harp), Brownie McGhee (guitar), Stick (or Sticks) McGhee (guitar), Mickey Baker (guitar), George Smith (harmonica) Larry Dale (guitar), Pete brown (tenor sax), and several others on bass and drums. As you would hope, these tracks find Dupree playing a lot of up tempo blues along with some great slower things like Failing Health Blues with some good guitar work from Baker. If you've never heardBlues...Gutter, and you're a blues fan, you owe it to yourself to hear this fine set of tunes. And now with remastered sound and an extra disc of period singles, this collection is hard to pass up.I still own my copies of Blues...Gutter and I pounced on this new set for all the singles now included. In a nutshell, this set belongs in every blues fans music library. Now more than ever. • NEW ORLEANS NOSTALGIA Remembering New Orleans History, Culture and Traditions by Ned Hémard
NEW ORLEANS NOSTALGIA Remembering New Orleans History, Culture and Traditions By Ned Hémard My Spy Boy The great New Orleans Mardi Gras Indian anthem Iko Iko was first recorded as Jock-A-Mo in 1954 for Checker Records by New Orleans singer James Crawford, who worked under the name of Sugar Boy & the Cane Cutters. His group was also known as the Chipaka Shaweez, and the song is loaded with Créole patois (a blend of French and, in this case it is believed, some original Gambian words). Jock-A-Mo, Dr. John tells us, “means ‘jester’ in the old myth. It is Mardi Gras music, and the Shaweez was one of many Mardi Gras groups who dressed up in far out Indian costumes and came on as Indian tribes.” Also in the Chipaka Shaweez, according to Dr. John, “were Professor Longhair on piano, Jake Myles, Big Boy Myles, Irv Bannister on guitar, and Eugene ‘Bones’ Jones on drums.” Crawford, who “lived near the Battlefield where the Indians paraded” (Simon Bolivar and Melpomene), drew his tune from much earlier rhythms and incantations: “It came from two Indian chants that I put music to,” he explained. “Iko Iko was like a victory chant that the Indians would shout. Jock-A-Mo was a chant that was called when the Indians went into battle. I just put them together and made a song out of them.” Jock-A-Mo became a huge hit in 1965 as Iko Iko by the Dixie Cups on the Red Bird label, and was later included on the soundtrack for the 1987 film “The Big Easy”.

  • “Some Kind of Something Is Going on Down There” Crossroads at Congo Square by Robert H
Winter/Spring 2015 “Some Kind of Something Is Going On Down There” Crossroads at Congo Square by Robert H. Cataliotti The Neville Brothers’ live recording of the song “Congo Square” opens with a funky, percolating, second line1 drum groove, over which Cyril Neville declares, We’re gonna take you to New Orleans, To that place where American music was born, y’all, A place called Congo Square. The song, written by guitarist Sonny Landreth, harmonica player Mel Melton, and bassist David Ranson, is a paean to the nineteenth-century Sunday gatherings of African people on a field at the back of the city that were a combination of music and dance, spiritual ritual, marketplace, socializing, and tourist attraction. Congo Square in New Orleans brought together people from a range of African nations. While some were brought directly from Africa, many came through Saint-Domingue/Haiti and Cuba. African people born in the Americas also joined in the mix, and the gatherings attracted both the enslaved and free people of color (gens de couleur libres). In addition, Native Americans and Caucasian people whose origins were in Europe and the United States were drawn to the festivities. The gatherings in Congo Square were not only, as Neville asserts, an essential source point for American music; they were also an outlet to survive, resist, and transcend the brutal dehumanization and exploitation of slavery by maintaining a link to an African identity. These gatherings formed an artistic, cultural, and economic crossroads that was mysterious, powerful, and without precedent. As the song “Congo Square” proclaims, “some kind of something is going on down there.” Congo Square was unique because it was virtually the only locale in North America where African people were allowed to gather to perform their traditional music, especially their drumming.
