It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God, through Christ our Lord.

For he assumed at his first coming the lowliness of human flesh, and so fulfilled the design you formed long ago, and opened for us the way to eternal salvation, that, when he comes again in glory and majesty and all is at last made manifest, we who watch for that day may inherit the great promise in which now we dare to hope.

14 MUSIC NOTES

This Sunday is the First Sunday of Advent and marks the beginning of the new liturgical year: Year A in the three-year lectionary cycle. The season of Advent (from the Latin adventus meaning ‘coming’) looks forward to the birth of Christ, calling us to prepare for his arrival, first in meekness and mercy and ultimately in judgment and glory at the end of time. Liturgies during this ‘privileged’ season of Advent strike a note of anticipation and repentance that is mingled with joy and hope; hence, although penitential violet is the season’s liturgical color, the Gloria is omitted, and the use of the organ is moderated, the Alleluia is retained. The congregational Ordinary (Kyrie, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei) at Sung Masses changes, and the hymns are drawn from a repertoire particular to the season. The Marian Antiphon Salve Regina, sung during the time after Pentecost, is replaced by the Alma Redemptoris Mater that will remain until Candlemas. During Advent and Christmastide, the Schola sings movements from a choral setting of the Ordinary at the Solemn Mass.

Jacob Handl, also known as Jacobus Gallus (both mean rooster, in German and Latin), was a late Renaissance composer born in the Duchy of Carniola in the Holy Roman Empire. Handl was most likely educated at the Cistercian monastery in Carniola. In his mid-teens, he left his home town to travel in Austria, Bohemia, Moravia, and Silesia, singing for a time in the choir at the Benedictine Melk Abbey (still active) on the Danube in lower Austria. He later served as a musician in the Viennese court chapel, as choirmaster for a Moravian bishop, and as organist of the Church of St. John on the Balustrade in Prague from 1585 until his death in 1591.

He composed hundreds of sacred works, including about twenty Masses and several Passions. His musical style mixes the polyphonic idiom of the High Renaissance Franco- Flemish composers as exemplified by Orlando di Lasso with that of the Venetian School, with a combination of archaic and then-experimental compositional techniques. Handl’s most notable work is the six-part Opus musicum of 1587, a collection of 374 motets that cover the liturgical needs of the entire ecclesiastical year.

Choral music at next Sunday’s Solemn Mass for the Second Sunday of Advent: Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina’s Missa Ut, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La (Hexacord Mass) and Deus tu convertens. 15 DECEMBER NEW YORK PURGATORIAL SOCIETY MASS

On Monday, December 2 at 7:00 PM at St. Vincent Ferrer, the N.Y.P.S. will offer its next monthly Mass in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite.

SOLEMN LATIN MASS FOR ST. NICHOLAS

On Thursday, December 5 at 6:00 PM, a Solemn Mass in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite will be offered at the Church of the Most Holy Redeemer (173 East 3rd Street) for the Vigil of the Feast of St. Nicholas. The Schola Cantorum of St. Vincent Ferrer will sing Franz Joseph Haydn’s Mass No. 6 in G Major, ‘Nicholaimesse’ (St. Nicholas Mass). The Mass is sponsored by the Society of St. Hugh of Cluny.

MARIAN LESSONS AND CAROLS

On Friday, December 6 at 7:00 PM at St. Vincent Ferrer, a Service of Lessons and Carols in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary will be offered. This hour-long celebration of the life of Mary will consist of a sequence of scripture readings, motets sung by the Schola Cantorum, and congregational hymns. A reception will follow in the Priory Parlors.
