My MGB GT by Paul Storey Belgium, Netherlands, and Germany where the MG took us on a leisurely drive along the Moselle Valley During my early days of motoring I was before returning home and (rather than selling the MG) I fortunate to own several different types of proceeded to lay up the car before jetting off to spend the motorcycles & cars following few years in Australia. We returned to the U.K. in 1979 following a leisurely Some of my cars over the years included a modified dark overland route, and I immediately proceeded to overhaul blue Ford 100E, a new BRG Midget (1965), a white Vauxhall the MGB and get it ready to use once again. I discovered VX490 saloon, a blue Sunbeam Rapier convertible. Also I had made a significant error when I left the MG raised coming into my ownership were a white Sunbeam Alpine on blocks, with its cylinders full of oil, and all the petrol roadster, a metallic blue Jaguar Mk2 3.4 auto (1969), drained from the fuel tank. Although the cylinders a red MG1300 (1970), in gun metal grey. a couple of were in great condition I discovered that condensation Austin A30s and a MK1 saloon used as runabouts. had rusted the seams and I needed a new petrol tank. On the 13th July 1973 as I walked past a small car showroom in Royal Enfield Crusader Sports Foleshill, Coventry I could not help but notice the gleaming BRG chrome bumper MGBGT that just shouted “come and buy me” - which I did, for little more than a £1,000! Since then many tens of thousands of pounds have disappeared, but that’s another story. I haven’t even added up the thousands of hours of labour recently devoted to give it a second, and indeed a third chance, instead of the rotten hulk that it had become, after many Amsterdam years of fast driving up and down very wet and heavily salted motorways whilst in my care. Of course we all know that cars built in the 60’s were never meant to last, as their bodies were not usually galvanised nor waxed. You either love your classics or simply ignore them, and as some would say - get yourself a life, however in my experience I have enjoyed every minute and for a telecommunications system design engineer, what else comes stress free? MG Cars Abingdon manufactured my MGBGT in 1969 but the economic situation then meant that there was little money around, and MGs were a luxury, so fewer cars were sold during this time, and the Arab war was soon to start which brought in petrol rationing plus a certain amount of panic. It’s also interesting to note that the GT cars built in 1969 were unique as in that year the front seats were made with black leather that also had black piping, whereas in other years the piping was a colour in contrast. As the Moselle Valley economic situation had delayed the sale of the MGBGT it I continued to use PJH4H until March 1985 when I decided did not find its first owner until he registered PJH4H on 9th to take it off the road after an enthusiastic MOT inspector April 1970, and as mentioned earlier I became its second stuck his screwdriver straight through the sills, with the owner when the odometer had climbed to 23,000 miles. mileage having reached 120,000. As I was restoring my in mid 1973. Jaguar Mark 2 at the time the MG had to wait patiently, During the first couple of years I improved the engine and however by January 1988 I was ready to start a full suspension with several modifications courtesy of Piranha, restoration that lasted several years - this taking second Osselli, Kenlowe, & etc., and with the improved place to the daytime job which required me to be overseas, performance of a light well balanced car, I enjoyed the every month, somewhere in the world for a week or 3. freedom of the relatively traffic free roads on my regular I think I can safely say that over the many years of journeys between Coventry and Guildford. having had the MG I have experienced every fault that October 1976 saw myself and “then” girlfriend Hilary, in it is possible to experience from corrosion affecting a 4 MGOC Durnovaria 1008 - April 2016

My MGB GT by Paul Storey - continued as cellulose stopper, now discontinued, that has since been replaced by two pack polyester stopper. I had no choice but commit to a full bare metal re-spray, and in January 2007 I started to strip the paint from key areas and remove all the glazing and bright work from the car. This time as I intended to use a two pack paint system it was essential to use a professional company and the car was delivered on a low loader to ‘Nidor’ in Poole. You only get what you pay for, and this wasn’t a cheap job, however the end result was OK and I did get professionals to replace the heated rear window, and The car I re-sprayed awaiting judging the windscreen, complete with all finishers which turned out OK. Upon receiving the car body, but I will not bore you with a description of the car back I cleaned up the dust, and refitted the interior improvements by which I eliminated all the problems one and all the other bits and pieces, and reminisced about by one. If anyone is interested I do have a photo album what money and labour I might have saved if I had been and documents which detail most of my remedies. It forewarned. should be noted that I was keen to keep the original body Nowadays I find no fault with “my” MG and enjoy the unique shell and rebuilt the original using genuine MG exterior experience but then all MGB owners will say the same as panels rather than purchase a whole new body shell as it I have never heard an owner complain about his particular was important for me to keep as much of my original car classic car, as I guess they are loved, warts and all. as possible! (NB. That type of entry is no longer allowed.) Since Duxford ten years have passed, and I have enjoyed driving the MG and the performance on several trips to Brittany some with and some without the club’s company. Unfortunately I discovered a problem with my cellulose painting as cracks were beginning to appear, and although the paint looked great, a close inspection revealed small splits where gas from the pre-primer layer had forced its way out through the upper paint layers. The cracks were caused by an ICI product known A mean looking MGB as seen in March 1984 5 MGOC Durnovaria 1008 - April 2016

was recently searching for pre-war MG related books (a par- ticular interest) and I came across this entry for a 19 year-old book on Amazon’s UK website: Hold on to those MG Road Cars: Six Cylinder O.H.C 1931 - 1936 old books! ‘Published by Magna Press 1997. Before long I had come up with a figure of over £1,500 for just a small selection. Needless to say I soon sorted out the ‘wheat from the chaff’ and kept the more interesting and valuable items selling the remainder on eBay. The rest I gave to fellow enthusiasts and just a few ended up at the charity shop. A case in point - I MB 8 MGOC Durnovaria 1008 - April 2016 Fancy a new motor squire?
