But I've been in the Lake District, and it is years since I was last there. The place I want to tell you about is Wild Cat Island on Coniston water. I was so excited to see it again, because it brought back a flood of happy memories from years ago. It may mean nothing to you; it may mean a lot to you. That doesn't matter. Among your memories you will have your own Wild Cat Island. The thought that came to me was this: It is years and years since I last saw the island, but there it is again. It's still there, and it's been there ever since I last saw it, even though I haven't given it a thought for ages, and when I go away it will still be there for me to come back to, or not, as the case may be. I am transient—here today and somewhere else tomorrow. But Wild Cat Island is permanent. It always has been there, and it always will be there. That is what God is like. He has always been there, and he will always be there. He is there whether we think of him or not. He is there whether we believe in him or not. He is there when we drift away from him, and he will still be there when we are ready to come back to him, and if we want to stay with him he will continue just being there for us. I'm afraid that this is a very short letter, but I've said what I wanted to say, so I'll just go back to thinking about the island. Thursday Holy Communion service is at Herriard at 10am on 18th October. All are welcome to this informal, friendly and relaxed service, which is followed by refreshments. Harvest Festival Services. Please do come and join us at our special Harvest Festival services – details below. All are warmly welcome and invited to bring gifts of food to be distributed after the service to local good causes. Simon. October 7th 10.00am - Harvest Family Communion at Upton Grey 11.15am - Harvest Festival Service at Weston Patrick October 14th 10.00am - Harvest Festival Service at Herriard 6.00pm - Harvest Festival Evensong at Tunworth Parish Harvest Meals - Upton Grey will host their Harvest Supper on Saturday 6th October at 7.30pm in the Upton Grey Village Hall. - Weston Patrick will host a Harvest lunch after the service on Sunday 7th October - Tunworth have their Harvest supper 7.30pm on Friday 12th October at The Shoot Lodge. - Herriard will hold their Harvest supper 7 for 7.30pm at the British Legion hall on Wednesday 17th October. All Age Service of Light: Sun 28th October, 4.30pm, St Mary’s Upton Grey. Join us for a family friendly celebration and service with crafts, games, worship and refreshments. Details in Children’s section. 3 Evensong services across the Benefice. Evensong is one of the treasures of the church, having been sung for hundreds of years. You may or may not know that there is an Evensong service on three out of four Sundays across our Benefice of 12 churches. It is a quiet and reflective service with beautiful traditional music, at times sung by a choir, and it is the perfect way to start the week. We use the traditional book of Common Prayer liturgy and often have a glass of wine after the service. If you would like to join us, the services are held as follows: - First Sunday (usually) of the month - All Saints, Odiham at 6.30pm. Please check the All Saints website for dates. - Second Sunday of the month - All Saints, Tunworth at 6pm during the summer (last summer Sunday in 2018 being 14th October) and then 5pm during the winter (from 11th November). - Fourth Sunday of the month - St Lawrence, Weston Patrick – at 5pm from 28th October. School of Theology – an Autumn course - Wednesdays 10th and 17th October and 14th, 21st and 28th November and 5th December- at the Shoot Lodge, RG25 2NB 7.30pm. This is a chance for anyone to come and explore some of the challenging texts of the Christian faith. You do not need to come to all of the sessions, simply come along when you can, bring a bible and any questions you might have. The sessions will be led by Rev Dr Tim Long and they will cover: Genesis 1- Who is God? Genesis 2 -What does it mean to be human? Genesis 3 - Two trees, one snake and sin. Genesis 22:1-19 - When God calls: Abraham and the sacrifice of Isaac. Job 40:1-5 and 42:1-6 - A penitent Job? John 4 - The Samaritan Woman: social outcast or apostle? It carries the monthly Parish Magazine including service times and diary dates, plus details of local groups and organisations and other information relating to the four churches. 4 Kids’Zone Sparks! Our Sparks group for Children aged 3 and up will start up again in September. The group meets alongside the morning service at St Mary’s Upton Grey on the second Sunday of the month. Dates for the Autumn term are: - Sun 14th October and 11th November. Drop off at the Village Hall at 9:50am, collect from the church at 11:00am 5 Children’s Ministry. The next date for our Sparks group to meet will be Sunday 14th October and then Sunday 11th November. The group meets alongside the morning service at St Mary’s Upton Grey on the second Sunday of the month, with drop off at the village hall at 9.50am and collection from church at 11am. It is a fun morning with crafts, games and worship and is for children aged 3 and up. Junior Choir. Our next practice will be 9.15am Sunday 7th October, with our Family Harvest Communion at 10am. We will also be singing at the Family Service 10am on Sunday 21st October. On Sunday 28th October at 4.30pm, our tea-time service will be a Service of Light as an alternative to Halloween and we will have a bonfire, marshmallow- toasting and interactive games and the rector’s deeply humorous and incisive reflections (added by the Rector himself!) Is Sunday morning a terrible time……for getting to church? We understand that Sunday mornings can be difficult and busy: at times with sport and family commitments competing – so we are trying a new tea-time service at 4.30pm on the 4th Sunday of the month at St Mary’s Upton Grey. Open to families across our villages, this service will start with a simple sandwich tea for our children, followed by a contemporary all-age service.     SOME MEMORIES OF HOOK 100 YEARS AGO1 [Written in about 1930, annotated by Nigel Bell 1998, transcribed by Martin Whittaker 1998] Perhaps I may be allowed to generalise before I start along the road I wish to travel. 'Hook': time and, time again has the question cropped up as to the origin of the name. It is a bit obscure but comes, I understand, from the Saxon Hoc meaning a piece of metal bent into a curve for catching, holding and sustaining anything: a snare, a trap, or from the Welsh Hoc meaning a scythe, a curved instrument for cutting grain – a sickle, and in this connection it is generally supposed by authorities that the name originated from the curved highway2. In passing I might say that there are about fourteen 'Hooks' and each one has, or had, a curved road passing through it. Hook itself owes its importance to being situated on this great highway extending from London to the West. During the centuries of the past British, Roman, Saxon, Dane3, Norman and the various European Traders to the great Fairs and Markets have passed on conveyances of their day with their goods and chattels. Kings, Queens, Statesmen, Soldiers and Sailors, all kinds of men, both high and low have passed through our humble hamlet. About a mile from this road, as you all know, are the remains of a castle just across Bartley Heath - generally spoken of as Hook Common. We hardly claim this as part of Hook proper, although it is only in the next parish, and about as close to this Band Hall as it is to Odiham church.

"Following the excitement of seeing our first Purple Emperor inside our office yesterday, exactly the same thing happened again today at around 9.45am. The office door was open and we spotted a butterfly on the inside of the window, on closer inspection we realised it was a Purple Emperor. It was much smaller than the one we had seen the day before and more battered. However we were able to take pictures of it, in fact the butterfly actually climbed onto one of the cameras and remained there for a while. It then climbed from camera to hand, and we took it outside for more pictures before it eventually flew off. It seemed to be feeding off the hand.". All Rights Reserved www.longpull.co.uk INTRODUCTION Well over 40 years ago, I began to notice that the English public house was more than just a building in which people drank. The customers talked and played, held trips and meetings, the licensees had their own stories, and the buildings had experienced many changes. These thoughts spurred me on to find out more. Obviously I had to restrict my field; Black Country pubs became my theme, because that is where I lived and worked. Many of the pubs I remembered from the late 1960’s, when I was legally allowed to drink in them, had disappeared or were in the process of doing so. My plan was to collect any information I could from any sources available. Around that time the Black Country Bugle first appeared; I have never missed an issue, and have found the contents and letters invaluable. I then started to visit the archives of the Black Country boroughs. Directories were another invaluable source for licensees’ names, enabling me to build up lists. The censuses, church registers and licensing minutes for some areas, also were consulted. Newspaper articles provided many items of human interest (eg. inquests, crimes, civic matters, industrial relations), which would be of value not only to a pub historian, but to local and social historians and genealogists alike. With the advances in technology in mind, I decided the opportunity of releasing my entire archive digitally, rather than mere selections as magazine articles or as a book, was too good to miss.
