BENEFICE MAGAZINE – October 2018 Edition for the Parishes of Herriard with Winslade, Tunworth, Upton Grey and Weston Patrick

A Letter from the Benefice Ministry Team I have just come back from my holidays—don't worry: I'm well aware that there are few things so boring as other people's holiday stories. But I've been in the Lake District, and it is years since I was last there. The place I want to tell you about is Wild Cat Island on Coniston water. I was so excited to see it again, because it brought back a flood of happy memories from years ago. It may mean nothing to you; it may mean a lot to you. That doesn't matter. Among your memories you will have your own Wild Cat Island. The thought that came to me was this: It is years and years since I last saw the island, but there it is again. It's still there, and it's been there ever since I last saw it, even though I haven't given it a thought for ages, and when I go away it will still be there for me to come back to, or not, as the case may be. I am transient—here today and somewhere else tomorrow. But Wild Cat Island is permanent. It always has been there, and it always will be there. That is what God is like. He has always been there, and he will always be there. He is there whether we think of him or not. He is there whether we believe in him or not. He is there when we drift away from him, and he will still be there when we are ready to come back to him, and if we want to stay with him he will continue just being there for us. I'm afraid that this is a very short letter, but I've said what I wanted to say, so I'll just go back to thinking about the island. Peter Moore, Licensed Lay Reader

Evensong services across the Benefice. Evensong is one of the treasures of the church, having been sung for hundreds of years. You may or may not know that there is an Evensong service on three out of four Sundays across our Benefice of 12 churches. It is a quiet and reflective service with beautiful traditional music, at times sung by a choir, and it is the perfect way to start the week. We use the traditional book of Common Prayer liturgy and often have a glass of wine after the service. If you would like to join us, the services are held as follows: - First Sunday (usually) of the month - All Saints, at 6.30pm. Please check the All Saints website for dates. - Second Sunday of the month - All Saints, Tunworth at 6pm during the summer (last summer Sunday in 2018 being 14th October) and then 5pm during the winter (from 11th November). - Fourth Sunday of the month - St Lawrence, Weston Patrick – at 5pm from 28th October.

School of Theology – an Autumn course - Wednesdays 10th and 17th October and 14th, 21st and 28th November and 5th December- at the Shoot Lodge, RG25 2NB 7.30pm. This is a chance for anyone to come and explore some of the challenging texts of the Christian faith. You do not need to come to all of the sessions, simply come along when you can, bring a bible and any questions you might have. The sessions will be led by Rev Dr Tim Long and they will cover: Genesis 1- Who is God? Genesis 2 -What does it mean to be human? Genesis 3 - Two trees, one snake and sin. Genesis 22:1-19 - When God calls: Abraham and the sacrifice of Isaac. Job 40:1-5 and 42:1-6 - A penitent Job? John 4 - The Samaritan Woman: social outcast or apostle? For more information, contact Rev Helen O’Sullivan ([email protected] or 01256 765496)

Don’t forget we have a website: www.uptongreychurch.co.uk. It carries the monthly Parish Magazine including service times and diary dates, plus details of local groups and organisations and other information relating to the four churches.

Upton Grey Autumn Festival – Saturday, 27th October We are holding our annual Autumn Festival at the Hoddington Arms (the Hodd) again this year. A unique, family oriented and highly entertaining celebration of Autumn. As Halloween is close, the Hodd will be especially themed for Halloween again this year and everybody is encouraged to come in their Halloween outfits and judged for a magnum of champagne first prize after the evenings dining. Free parking in Church Meadow, RG25 2RA. Starting at 2pm (prize giving at 4pm) in the back garden of the Hoddington Arms we have local produce to taste and buy. New for this year is a local pottery stall and free craft Gin tasting courtesy of Winchester Distillery based in Alresford. Conkers, apple bobbing, snail races, pumpkin bowling, kids Halloween fancy dress and silent disco competitions, bouncy castle, Guy Fawkes, giant pumpkins, gourds, autumn paintings, autumn photos and lots more. Newlyn’s Farm Shop will be providing a fresh BBQ throughout the afternoon and the Bar will be open for drinks. You can help add to the success of the afternoon by providing entries for the festival – for example carved pumpkins are easy. At 6 pm gather at The Hodd for mulled wine, church bell ringing, Jack O’Lantern procession to Hoddington Estate Park, bonfire and professional firework display. Then back to The Hodd for the pre- bookable 2 course Festival Menu (£10 only), band, Halloween Fancy Dress competition and then Silent Disco in the heated marquee. Post bonfire drinks can be pre ordered and ready for your return. Don’t forget, be brave, and come along in your evening Halloween outfits to win a magnum of champagne as first prize. Entry to both events is free for all kids, for adults it’s £2 on the gate in the afternoon, £7.50 advance tickets (£10 on the day) for the bonfire etc. (tickets from the Hodd, the Shop or Roger Clark). See www.uptongreyautumnfestival.co.uk for all contact, festival and competition entry details. It’s an excellent reason to invite your friends or family down for the day or weekend for a unique and highly entertaining autumn event and what’s more all proceeds go to the excellent charity, St. Michael’s Hospice who help man the afternoon’s events.

Autumn Festival Ornamental Gourd Painting –Sat, 20th October Kids are invited to the Cabannah, back garden of the Hodd at 2.30pm, Sat 20th October to paint ornamental gourds for the best decorated gourds competition at the Autumn Festival on 27th October.

Guy Fawkes in Upton Grey for 27th Oct Last year we had over 3 dozen Guy Fawkes on display around the village. You can see some of them on our web site www.uptongreyautumnfestival.co.uk if you click on Photo Album and then click on Guy Fawkes 2017 (or 2016, 2015, 2014 or 2013). So, start planning your Guy Fawkes designs now and let’s see if we can beat last year’s number. At the beginning of October straw will again be available from Newlyn’s Farm Shop and Ken & Barbie Titanic Fawkes, Quasimodo Fawkes, Penny for the Guy, a new PC Andy Fawkes (the old one was nicked last year!) and hopefully a Reverend Fawkes will be among those appearing by the end of the first week. It’s great to see the Guy Fawkes spring up around the village but if you also want to enter the Autumn Festival competition on the 27th October then you need to enter a photo of your Guy (ideally A4) by 2pm on the day.

From Bach to the Beatles, Sun 14th Oct, St Mary’s Church, UG Concert in aid of Brain Tumour Research and St Mary’s, Upton Grey given by The Benslow Ensemble. Sunday 14th October 7.30pm, St. Mary’s Church, Upton Grey. Entry free. Spring Holiday for Strings is a residential course for quartet players held at Benslow Music Centre, Hitchin. At the start of each day, the nine cellists on the course meet for a rehearsal led and coached by Sean Turpin of the Hammig String Quartet. Sean provides a selection of pieces to play, that he has often arranged himself, for up to nine cello parts, ranging from Bach Chorales, through pieces by Purcell, Pergolesi, Telemann, and Vivaldi, to the Wiggle Woggle Rag and on to Let It Be from the Beatles. Hence our concert title, from Bach to the Beatles! For the second year, the cellists have agreed to meet again in the Autumn for a workshop, and to perform a concert at the end of it. Entry is free, but as befits the occasion, the concert will be in support of a charity, as well the church, of course. This year the charity is Brain Tumour Research. The charity raises funds not only to support research at four research centres in the UK, but also to raise awareness of the number of people, especially under the age of 40, who are affected and how little money is, as yet, spent on research to find a cure. We hope you will be able to support the concert.

Upton Grey Village Shop To remind: The Village Shop is vital for the community and let’s all try to use it as much as possible. If every single family resolved to spend £10 or £20 more there each week it would make a difference.

The stock is excellent and varied - wine much the same price as the supermarkets. You know it makes sense to shop there, not least because it adds to the value of your house to have a shop nearby. When you pick up your paper, buy something as well, or two or three things. It won’t take much longer, and you do have time. Use the shop (not just when it is snowing) or lose it!

Upton Grey & District Horticultural Show – Sat 11th Aug 2018 What a fantastic display (and range) of exhibits we had in the Show Marquee. We had over 560 exhibits. Almost all of the 159 classes had exhibits. We were absolutely delighted! A big big thank-you to everyone who entered. Without your entries, we would, quite simply, not have a Show. In the afternoon the tea tent drew a large crowd with its home-made cakes and teas. The attractions which included Alpacas, falconry, pigs, classic cars, Ukulele band, Punch & Judy, and Hunt’s trucks, added so much interest to the whole day. The Tombola sold out very quickly - as usual. Local businesses selling anything from fudge, to waffles, to cakes, to clothing to plants, were all well supported. Although overcast and rain threatening all afternoon, the ice cream man sold a lot of ice cream! The Dog Show was very well supported so thanks to everyone who brought their pet dogs along. The Show could not take place without the help of volunteers and supporters and we thank absolutely everyone who helped in any way whether behind the scenes or on the front line. If you would like to help at future shows or even join our very small enthusiastic committee, then please let me know on 01256 862719. Our Spring Show 2019 will be held in Upton Grey Village Hall, on Sat 6th April and the Summer Show (Village Show) in Church Meadow on Sat 10th August. So please keep a note of the dates and we hope to see you and your exhibits. June Hunt, Secretary Upton Grey & District Horticultural Society PS a small grey and blue pottery jug was found amongst the flower exhibits. If it’s yours, please phone the number above.

Farnborough Airspace Decision by CAA & Lasham Gliding Campaign PRESS RELEASE: ‘New Controlled Airspace Around Farnborough Airfield. On 11th July, the CAA published its decision granting a large area of new controlled airspace around Farnborough Airfield. This decision follows an airspace change proposal process initiated by TAG Farnborough Airport. Lasham Gliding Society is strongly opposed to the CAA's decision. Contrary to the statements made in the CAA decision document, Lasham Gliding Society considers that the decision to introduce new controlled airspace has not been justified by the CAA: it will create a choke point, it does not represent an efficient use of the airspace and it does not properly or reasonably balance the needs of all users. The consequence of the implementation of this large volume of controlled airspace on a small airfield which has around 28,000 annual (non-public) movements, will be to displace many times more transiting flights and to cause significant congestion of general aviation movements outside the controlled airspace. Lasham Gliding Society, the world's biggest gliding club with around twice the number of annual movements of Farnborough Airport, will be in this bottleneck. This gives rise to obvious safety risks for gliders and other aircraft. The CAA has not published any data or evidence to support its decision that the new arrangements will be safe (or that the existing arrangements are not safe), and it has not published any analysis of the impact on Lasham Gliding Society or general aviation traffic in the choke points. Further, the measures suggested by the CAA for mitigating the serious safety risk are inadequate and ill-conceived. During the decision-making process, Lasham Gliding Society in partnership with the British Gliding Association and the General Aviation Alliance, engaged with the CAA in meetings and in writing to explain the problems with the changes proposed by TAG Farnborough. The same parties also submitted a practical and safe alternative airspace design at the request of the CAA. Notwithstanding this, the CAA has proceeded to approve TAG Farnborough's proposal with only minor modifications. In these circumstances, Lasham Gliding Society has taken legal advice and will be writing formally to the CAA asking it to withdraw its decision. If the CAA does not withdraw the decision, or provide information properly justifying it, Lasham Gliding Society will consider all options including a legal challenge.

14

If you are interested in providing financial support to the Society to help it to challenge the CAA's decision, please contact the office at Lasham’. LGS is starting a campaign, see for details: https://www.lashamgliding.com/pages/airspace-campaign. Mike Clarke, Chairman, Lasham Gliding Society Ltd, 24 August 2018 Herriard Garden Club In July, some of the Garden Club visited a stunning rooftop garden in the heart of London at Cannon Street. This was a privately arranged visit with the Head Gardener who gave us a guided tour of the garden. The borders were all different and a joy to the eyes, filled with prime plant specimens set around immaculate lawns. When you lifted your gaze from the plants, the panoramic views of London were equally sensational. It was an unforgettable garden made so special by the location and the passion and skills of the gardeners who look after it. Our allotment has been a huge success this year, with a range of vegetables and a cutting garden of seasonal cut flowers. We are currently harvesting sweet corn, Fir apple potatoes, kale, chard, squash, carrots and leeks. In the cutting garden, white Cosmos, pink Salvia and Dahlias are all doing well. The Garden Club had a social 'Supper Party' at the allotment in September with some home cooked veggie-based dishes. Invite family and friends who have helped with some of the heavy jobs at the allotment and to extend the summer outdoors feeling. If you are interested in gardening and would like to meet other like-minded local folk, contact Gill 01256 381448. We meet monthly at each other's houses, we share gardening problems, offer each other plants and seeds, meet up at our allotment and for visits and social events.

The play charts his life, from his induction into the Augustine order, his conflict with his father and then the Pope, his campaign against ‘indulgences’ and his eventual split from the Catholic church. Expect intensity, power and humour! Tickets available from Sept 18th at either: Wildly Upbeat Printers, 63A High St, Alton. GU34 1AB. Or online at www.altonfringe.com. Price £10.00. Student concessions £8.00.

Mothers’ Union: Tues 16th Oct, Mary Magdalene at RAF Church Our next meeting is on Tuesday 16th October in the RAF Church at 7:30pm. We are looking forward to watching the film Mary Magdalene, which we had to postpone from earlier in the year. Non-members are welcome to come and join us. Mothers’ Union had a very busy summer. We celebrated the birthday of our founder, Mary Sumner on 9th August, then held our annual ‘Away From It All Holiday’ for families in need from 11th to 18th August and finally we had our annual stall at RAF Families Day on Wednesday 29th August. A big thank you to everyone who helped on the stall, or baked cakes for us to provide to the service personnel and their families. The RAF really appreciate this outreach, and our stall is very popular. If you want to find out more about us, please contact our Branch Leader, Sue Murphy on 01252 845011.

News from Long Sutton Church of Primary School Our Open Mornings for children starting school in September 2019 will be held on Wednesday 10th October and Tuesday 30th October (both 9.15 – 10.30am); we are also holding an Open Evening on Thursday 11th October (7-8pm), for those parents who are unable to attend during the day, however I would encourage you to come to the morning events if you can, in order to see the school in action with real little people! The events will include a talk from myself, with contributions from other key members of the school community, followed by a tour of the school, led by some of our Year 6 children. If you would like to attend any of these events, please telephone the school office on 01256 862238 to book a place. If the planned dates are inconvenient for you, please telephone the office and we will be happy to arrange an alternative time for a visit.

The term is back in full swing and we are particularly delighted with how well our new Reception children have settled in. They are already taking an active part in school life, attending whole school Collective Worship and enjoying playtimes with the rest of the school (with a little help from their Year 6 buddies). We look forward to seeing them grow during their time at our school. Our first ever Fruit, Vegetable and Flower Show was a great success and we shall be running this event annually, in order to encourage children to have a go at ‘growing their own’. ‘Growth’ will also be the theme of our Harvest Festival this year, as we encourage the children to think about what plants need to grow and what we as humans need in order to grow and flourish physically, morally, spiritually, socially and emotionally. The new school year has brought some staff changes and we welcome Mrs. Kirsty Caddick and Mr. Tim Nabb as our Y5/6 teachers. They are both experienced teachers from within Hampshire and we are very happy to have them on board. Our ‘extended staff family’ has also grown this term, as we have welcomed Rev. Helen O’Sullivan in a staff and children’s pastoral role, as well as ‘Miss. Gabi’ as a dedicated Play Therapist and ELSA (Emotional literacy Support Advisor). Many of you will be aware of the local ‘Help Hoima’ charity, which works to improve the lives of children and the quality of healthcare, education and agriculture in Hoima, Uganda. We were honoured to welcome Bishop Sam and his wife, Sarah, from Hoima, to our school on Thursday 13th September. The children learnt about the long standing and special relationship between our local area and Hoima and are feeling inspired to do something to support the ‘Help Hoima’ charity. The School Council will be leading some fundraising this year. If you have children of Primary School age and would like to find out more about us, I would love to show you around our ‘vibrant and exciting’ school (Ofsted March 2018). Hannah Inglis (Headteacher).

Basingstoke Choral Society – our next concert! Our concert on Sunday 18th November 7pm in The Anvil features the ever-popular work of Karl Jenkins. The Peacemakers, a work dedicated to peace, was composed by Jenkins as a sequel to his much- loved Armed Man. In seeking to extol peace, Jenkins takes his text from the writings of iconic figures such as Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Anne Frank and the Dalai Lama. We will be singing this piece one week after Armistice Day and we hope the work will offer inspiration and solace for a time in need of both.

The New London Sinfonia will also perform Palladio – a work for strings, his is a celebration of harmony, order and restraint and very recognisably in the Baroque style. These two pieces show case the enormous appeal of our most famous contemporary composer. Tickets available on 01256 844244 or www.anvilarts.org.uk. Prices: £27, £21, £16, £12. Students and under 16’s £7All prices include a £2 booking fee. We put the Sing in BaSingstoke!

Lyme Disease Lyme disease is a bacterial infection that can be spread to humans by infected ticks. It's usually easier to treat if it's diagnosed early. Ticks that may cause Lyme disease are found all over the UK, but high-risk areas include grassy and wooded areas in southern England and the Scottish Highlands. Tick bites aren't always painful. You may not notice a tick unless you see it on your skin. Regularly check your skin and your children's or pets' skin after being outdoors. Many people with early symptoms of Lyme disease develop a circular red skin rash often described as a bull’s eye on a dartboard. The rash can appear up to 3 months after being bitten by a tick and usually lasts for several weeks. Most rashes appear within the first 4 weeks. The rash is not necessarily at the site of the tick bite.

20

Not everyone with Lyme disease gets the rash. Some people also have flu-like symptoms in the early stages, such as: - a high temperature; or feeling hot & shivery - headaches - muscle and joint pain - tiredness and loss of energy. Only a small number of ticks are infected with the bacteria that cause Lyme disease. A tick bite can only cause Lyme disease in humans if the tick has already bitten an infected animal. But it's still important to be aware of ticks and to safely remove them as soon as possible, just in case. To remove a tick safely: 1. Use fine-tipped tweezers or a tick-removal tool – you can buy these from some pharmacies, vets and pet shops 2. Grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible. 3. Slowly pull upwards, taking care not to squeeze or crush the tick. Dispose of it when you've removed it. 4. Clean the bite with antiseptic or soap and water. The risk of getting ill is low. You don't need to do anything else unless you become unwell. See a GP if you've been bitten by a tick or visited an area in the past month where infected ticks are found, AND you get flu-like symptoms – such as feeling hot and shivery, headaches, aching muscles or feeling sick, or a circular red rash. Your GP will ask about your symptoms and consider any rash or recent tick bites you know about. Lyme disease can be difficult to diagnose. It has similar symptoms to other conditions and there is not always an obvious rash. A blood test is available to help diagnose Lyme disease, but it is often a clinical diagnosis based on the patient’s symptoms, as the test can take some time to show as positive. If your GP thinks you might have Lyme disease, they'll prescribe a 3-week course of antibiotics. It's important to finish the course, even if you start to feel better. Most people with Lyme disease get better after antibiotic treatment. This can take months for some people, but the symptoms should improve over time. To reduce the risk of being bitten: - cover your skin while walking outdoors and tuck your trousers into your socks - use insect repellent on your clothes and skin – products containing DEET are best - stick to paths whenever possible - wear light-coloured clothing so ticks are easier to spot and brush off

POETRY CORNER

‘To Autumn’ by John Keats (written 19th September 1819)

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness, Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun; Conspiring with him how to load and bless With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run; To bend with apples the moss'd cottage-trees, And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core; To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells With a sweet kernel; to set budding more, And still more, later flowers for the bees, Until they think warm days will never cease, For summer has o'er-brimm'd their clammy cells.

Who hath not seen thee oft amid thy store? Sometimes whoever seeks abroad may find Thee sitting careless on a granary floor, Thy hair soft-lifted by the winnowing wind; Or on a half-reap'd furrow sound asleep, Drows'd with the fume of poppies, while thy hook Spares the next swath and all its twined flowers: And sometimes like a gleaner thou dost keep Steady thy laden head across a brook; Or by a cyder-press, with patient look, Thou watchest the last oozings hours by hours.

Where are the songs of spring? Ay, Where are they? Think not of them, thou hast thy music too,— While barred clouds bloom the soft-dying day, And touch the stubble-plains with rosy hue; Then in a wailful choir the small gnats mourn Among the river sallows, borne aloft Or sinking as the light wind lives or dies; And full-grown lambs loud bleat from hilly bourn; Hedge-crickets sing; and now with treble soft The red-breast whistles from a garden-croft; And gathering swallows twitter in the skies
