Lesson Two Contents, Supplies, and Prep Boldness Two LEADER DEVOTIONAL According to Tess at theboldlife.com, “bold people think differently, speak differently, and do things differently.” 2 Corinthians 3:12 says we can be confidently bold! Be confident that our message is good news! It’s the way to life in the Kingdom—a good message for all people! Our culture doesn’t always agree, so let’s ask God to fill us with boldness to think differently. God’s boldness causes us to speak differently. We know truth, but truth without love is harmful. We need to boldly speak the truth, this good news, in love. Love helps us see the person first. Only God can give us bold love that shapes the way we speak. Boldness causes us to do things differently. If we encounter someone who’s sick, we ask, “may I pray for you right now?” We don’t wait until we get home to pray. We do what the Holy Spirit shows us in the moment. When we’re changed from the inside out we become bold! ICE BREAKER RULES Each kid spends thirty seconds talking to the kid next We’ve only got THREE RULES. Welcome - Boldness LOW ENERGY ACTIVITY LESSON TWO 10 min BIG AND LITTLE GAME 1 Kids stand in a circle. 2 One kid starts by saying either the words “big,” or “little.” 3 If the word is “big,” he or she makes the opposite hand motions, putting them close together. 4 If it’s “little,” he or she makes the opposite hand motions, putting them far apart. 5 After completing the motion, he or she chooses another kid who goes next. This can be anyone in the circle. 6 The next kid says “big” or “little” and makes the opposite hand motion. 7 If someone messes up, he or she is out and sits down. The last kids left standing are the winners. Low Energy Activity - Boldness SMALL GROUP LESSON TWO 15 min THE VERSE Since this new way gives us such confidence, we can be very bold. 2 Corinthians 3:12 (NLT) THE POINT Jesus can make me bold for him. Introduce yourself and welcome each kid by name. Can you think of 3 people who need to know that Jesus can change them from the inside out? Check up on previous prayer requests or events. Maybe they’re in your family, neighborhood, or school. They can be kids or grown-ups! Give each kid a “My 3 Friends” Prayer Card and a ACTIVITY pencil. Give them time to fill out the cards. They can lower him by unrolling the twine. SUPPLIES: • 1 small paper cup per kid (purchase HERE) • 1 jumbo craft stick per kid (purchase HERE) • 2 pieces of twine (4–5ft) per kid (purchase HERE) • Craft glue (purchase HERE) • 1 scrap of construction paper per kid (3” x 3”) • Markers • Scissors 1 Each kid is given one paper cup, a craft stick, and both pieces of twine. 2 Stretch one of the twine pieces out flat and set the cup in the center of it. DISCUSS DURING THE ACTIVITY: 3 Glue the twine to the bottom and up the sides of the cup. • Paul was living in place called Damascus. Spirek, Ph.D., Advisor Jeremy Wallach, Ph.D., Graduate Faculty Representative Laura Lengel, Ph.D. John Warren, Ph.D. © 2006 Enter your First and Last Name All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Melissa Spirek, Ph.D., Advisor Investigations of popular music forms that have been negatively portrayed in popular media, such as heavy metal and rap, have been largely limited to analyses of lyrics (e.g., Hansen & Hansen, 1991; St. Lawrence & Joyner, 1991; Ballard & Coates, 1995; Anderson, Carnagey, & Eubanks, 2003), even though evidence of the sound being more important than the words was demonstrated as far back as 1969 (Robinson & Hirsch). The present investigation was conducted in response to this void in the literature. To test the music, a two-part multimethodological study was employed, consisting of an experiment and surveys, to analyze how music genres are cognitively processed by listeners. The first study tested differences in people’s perceptions of different music genre labels and their impact on song lyrics. The second study tested differences in musical genres using pop original and heavy metal cover songs as stimuli. Data collection was gathered via questionnaires consisting of both open- and closed-ended items. When rigorously assessing people’s behaviors, perceptions, and self-reports identifying media consumption preferences, the investigation’s findings refute a direct effects approach to music listening and underscore the complexity of individual difference factors.

    LEADER DEVOTIONAL Working with imperfect people who offend, disappoint, or hurt one another can be tough. But God gives us perseverance to keep serving while he continually fills us with all we need. Sometimes, though, we still feel burned out. Why? What can we do about it? Jesus says, “Come to me all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28) In a life spent giving to others all the time, Jesus recharged by turning to his father. He frequently went away to pray, and attended synagogue each sabbath. He also had times with just his three closest friends. Here are ways to “come to” him and receive rest: • Make attending the adult service a priority. • Create a playlist of favorite worship songs. Spend time each day in worship and listening prayer. • Schedule time weekly to do something that refills you, i.e. a hot bath, a walk in the park, coffee with friends.     ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: CHASING THE RAINBOW: GENDER- RELIGIOSITY AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF IDENITY IN THE MUSIC AND RITUAL OF THE METROPOLITAN COMMUNITY CHURCH OF NORTHERN VIRGINIA Gaetano Romano Lotrecchiano, PhD 2005 Dissertation Directed By: Carolina Robertson, PhD Professor of Ethnomusicology, Division of Musicology and Ethnomusicology Luke Jensen, PhD Affiliate Assistant Professor of Musicology, Division of Musicology and Ethnomusicology The intersection of belief, identity, and performance enacted in the Metropolitan Community Church of Northern Virginia (MCC NOVA) - a lesbian, bisexual, gay, transgender, queer community of faith, provides an arena for ethnomusicological inquiry into ritual performance and identity construction. As a safe-haven for persons marginalized by mainstream religious traditions, MCC NOVA serves as an alternative to historically oppressive and suppressive worshipping environments where LBGTQ lifestyle is often considered antithetical to the goals of religiosity. It grounds ritual and musical practices in its core values: elastic theology, inclusiveness, diversity, community, member-ministers, and love and acceptance. These core values are the basis of a variety of performative events which allow for the self-fashioning of identity and spiritual exploration on both an individual and corporate level. Affected by a variety of “cradle traditions”, this LBGTQ group draws on a complex assortment of sacred musics and ritual practices which form a unique gender-religiosity as MCCers journey to describe and re-invent their collective self. MCC NOVA intensifies the experience of faith through its multi-gendered condition, alternative spiritualities, and idiosyncratic performance events by fashioning a Judeo-Christian-based LBGTQ spirituality in light of freedoms which allow for exploration beyond the boundaries of the Christian ordo.
