    CHIEF JUSTICE OF INDIA CHIEF JUSTICE OF INDIA The Chief Justice of India (CJI) is the head of the judiciary of India and the Supreme Court of India. The CJI also heads their administrative functions. In accordance with Article 145 of the Constitution of India and the Supreme Court Rules of Procedure of 1966, the Chief Justice allocates all work to the other judges who are bound to refer the matter back to him or her (for re-allocation) in any case where they require it to be looked into by a larger bench of more judges. Anand (1936-2017) Adarsh Sein Anand, a constitutional expert and an advocate of human rights and civil liberties, was born on 1 November 1936. He pursued L.L.B from Lucknow University in 1960 and was awarded a doctorate in Law (Constitutional Law of Commonwealth) from the University of London in 1963. Justice Anand participated in various national and international conferences, notable among them was the first Appellate Judge Conference at Manila, Philippines (1977); Appellate Judges’ Conference, New Delhi (1984); Law Conference, New Delhi (1994); 2nd Worldwide Common Law Judiciary Conference at Washington DC, USA (1997) and SAARC Chief Justices’ Conference at Colombo, Sri Lanka (1998). Justice Anand was awarded an honorary doctorate in Law by Lucknow University in 1996. He was elected President of the International Institute of Human Rights Society and was the first Indian to be honoured with a fellowship of the University College, London, 1997.
