Students watched the video messages in homeroom and teachers followed up by initiating dialogue and dis- cussion centered on the issues presented. Students were then given the opportunity to take the Glenwood “Pinkie Promise” during lunch periods and pledged to “Gang up for Good” and promote respect, citizenship, fairness, car- ing, responsibility and trustworthiness. Students taking the oath had their pinkie nail painted green and gold by one of the GOHS students who starred in the video, sign their name and stamp their pinkie print on the building pledge sheet. Students enjoyed the special messages prepared for them, and the pledge sheet served as a reminder of the importance of positive leadership and character in school. Just Like Me Teaches Respect Frazer third and fourth grade students were recently challenged by the play “Just Like Me”. In this play, four young actors demonstrate and talk about different types of bullying and how it makes them feel. One girl conveys how she was teased for being overweight stating, “Even the nicest kids forget that you shouldn’t say every- thing you are thinking.” Another adds, “People say words don’t hurt. They must have never been bullied. Words do hurt.” The bully in the play gets a chance to explain why he bullies and how it is hard to be hated. Students were then challenged to speak and act kindly and to consider how others are impacted by what they say and do. They were also reminded how important it is to not be bystanders, but to have the courage to stand up for anyone who is being bullied. School counselor Tim McKean and teachers initiated follow-up discussions in the classroom. The goal is that all students are treated with respect and valued for the unique contributions they bring to the Frazer family.
