Stand-Up Comedy and Everyday Life: Post-war British Comedy and the Subversive Strain. Christopher Ritchie. Goldsmiths College, London, Ph. D Drama, 1998. - ME Ia- AM GOLDSMITHS 87 0079879 6 Abstract. This thesis "examinee,,, its to life , . stand-up comedy and relation everyday and presents a model of everyday life in the commodity society. It seeks to define stand up comedy and how it works as a performance mode and will offer a definition of the stand-up comedian. It will examine how jokes reflect opinions and attitudes within everyday life and how they can communicate negative cultural myths, stereotypes and ideologies but also reach beyond the merely absurd and comical to present authentic moments that enable us to locate the truth about ourselves. The thesis seeks to locate a stand-up comedy that enables us to understand ourselves in relation to life in the commodity society. The thesis traces a subversive lineage through post-Second World War comedy from The Goon Show through the satirists of the 1960s and Monty Pylhon's Flying Circus to Alternative Comedy and stand-up comedians in the present day. The 'Alternative Comedy moment' between 1979 and 1981 is central to the thesis as is the relation to American stand-up comedy, Punk and the rise of reactionary humour in Britain. Alternative Comedy is identified and placed in a social, political and counter-cultural context. The achievements and failures of this comedy will be discussed with particular focus on the redefinition of the role of women and sexual politics in stand-up comedy and the creation of a thriving London cabaret and comedy scene. -

Page 1 of 6 Print Page Close Window Swearing in Ceremony of the Honourable Jeffery William Shaw QC as a Judge of the Supreme Court of New South Wales IN THE SUPREME COURT OF NEW SOUTH WALES BANCO COURT SPIGELMAN CJ AND THE JUDGES OF THE SUPREME COURT Tuesday 4 February 2003 SWEARING IN CEREMONY OF THE HONOURABLE JEFFREY WILLIAM SHAW QC AS A JUDGE OF THE SUPREME COURT OF NEW SOUTH WALES Judgment 1 SHAW J: Chief Justice, I have the honour to announce that I have been appointed a Judge of this Court. I present my Commission. 2 SPIGELMAN CJ: Thank you, Justice Shaw. Please be seated whilst the Commission is read. Principal Registrar, would you please read the Commission. (Commission read) Justice Shaw, I ask you to rise and take the affirmations of office, first the affirmation of allegiance and then the judicial affirmation. (Affirmations of office taken) Principal Registrar, I hand to you the affirmations to be placed amongst the Court archives. 3 Justice Shaw, it is a common occurrence in this Court for the Court to welcome, as a colleague, a silk of such distinction as your Honour is. It is a much more rare occurrence for the Court to welcome a former Attorney who has served, it is universally acknowledged, a successful term of office. 4 A number of judges of this Court owe their appointment to your recommendation as, indeed, I do myself. So your Honour joins a bench in which a number of colleagues already have a high opinion of your judgement. -

Revisiting the Babylonian Exile in Jeremiah 29:1-14: A Samoan La-tō Reading using an Oceanic Hermeneutic A thesis presented to the University of Otago Dunedin, New Zealand In partial fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Theology (Old Testament in Biblical Studies) by Numerator Tuimalatū Leuila Ofo’ia July, 2017 Dedication I dedicate this thesis with honour and much gratitude to my beloved father, the late Rev. Tuimalatū Leuila Ofo’ia. You are gone but truly not forgotten. I remember you in every way; you disciplined and taught me. I love you Papa with all my heart. RIL And to My mother Makerita Ofo’ia And My wife Inamorata Rowena Ofoia and children: Tauvaga Numerator Junior, Wennarator Irae, Cecilia Inamorata, Belteshazzar Mapusaga and Jacob Berakah. Abstract This project explores the feasibility of a Samoan approach to the Judahites’ ‘exile,’ with particular reference to Jeremiah 29:1-14. The word ‘exile’ in the Hebrew Bible can imply discipline as an act of love, life, and hope rather than hatred and wrath. This positive interpretation challenges the dominant negative Samoan view of the Babylonian Exile, which was influenced by Pacific missionary pioneers and the tacit acceptance of the Bible in Samoa. Specifically, this project will develop a la-tō (‘travel away from home’) perspective as an alternative reading approach, reflecting opportunity and hope that results from exploration. The project also raises concerns about apparent inaccuracies in the translation of the Samoan Bible that influence modern believers to be either victims of misinterpretation or silently to tolerate the limitations of the missionary translation. -

Introducing Griff Rhys Jones
Graduation 2010 Oration for Honorary Graduand Griff Rhys Jones Chancellor, Senate has resolved that the Degree of Doctor of the University be conferred upon Griff Rhys Jones. It is a genuine pleasure and truly an honour to introduce this year’s University of Essex Honourary Graduand. It is also fairly daunting to do so, as the custom of beginning such speeches with a friendly joke is made virtually impossible when introducing any figure involved in comedy, especially when that figure is such a well respected comedy actor, writer, director, and producer. The task of condensing the prodigious talents, achievements and outputs of Griff Rhys Jones into a five-minute oratory is both easy and difficult in equal measure: easy because there is such a wide variety of his achievements and accolades to choose from; and difficult precisely because there is such a wide variety of his achievements and accolades to choose from. Griff is best known to most of us through his television comedy programmes such as the groundbreaking satirical sketch show Not the Nine O’Clock News, which ran from 1979-1982, with Rowan Atkinson, Mel Smith, and Pamela Stephenson, and the massive hit series, Alas Smith and Jones, with Mel Smith, from 1984 to 1998. However, not only a gifted and celebrated comedy actor and writer himself, Griff (again, with Mel Smith) has been responsible for producing and supporting some of the most innovative and widely acclaimed British comedy of the following generation. Through the enormously successful production company TalkBack Productions, hugely popular television series such as Smack the Pony, Da Ali G Show, I'm Alan Partridge and Big Train were brought to almost cult status worldwide.
