Long term monitoring data are crucial for understanding the effects of climate change on vegetation dynamics. Successful management intervention in vegetation change will require identification of early indicator plant species and their responses to climatic cues. This project is one of the oldest comparisons of resurveyed Mojave vegetation community plots with repeatable methodology and the longest survey interval reported for the southeastern Mojave Desert. 103 plots were relocated and resurveyed based on data methods in Jim Holland’s thesis titled “A Vegetative Analysis of the Newberry Mountains, Nevada.” We compared measures of species abundance and measures of community composition between the survey years of 1979 and 2008 and further investigated if changes were related to numerous environmental gradients present in the mountain range. Community composition, as measured by relative cover, was the only abundance measure found significantly different between survey years (A= -0.0031, p=0.04). Mountain soils derived from granitic residuum and colluvium showed significantly higher community composition change compared to the alluvial soil of bajadas. Certain plant species, such as Coleogyne iii ramosissima, associated with specific soils and higher elevations report significant decreases across multiple abundance measures. Other species such as Ferocactus cylindraceus were found to have increased significantly across abundance measures. We address inferred scenarios for changes to species across environmental gradients as well as the suitability of each species and various abundance measures as early indicators of vegetation community change. Overall we found negligible change for most plant species and vegetation communities as represented by multiple abundance measures between survey years. In addition, the analysis provided useful information on the natural history and current status of species within this unique mountain range. Future resurvey efforts with permanently established plots and shorter intervals have exciting potential for more predictive information relating to vegetation change. iv TABLE OF CONTENTS What measurable goals did you set for this project and what indicators did you use to measure your performance? To what extent has your project achieved these goals and levels of performance? The major goal of this project was to find and assess populations of all eleven bryophyte (nonvascular) species of concern in Clark County, NV. These species are those classified as either "covered" or "evaluation" species based on listings in the Clark County Species Account Manual. Several of these species are notably rare on a global scale, whereas others are rare in the state of Nevada but relatively common outside of the state of Nevada. Assessment was to take the form of (i) estimating the number of populations present for each species, and (ii) estimating the health and projected future persistence of these populations based upon reproductive status of the species, life history attributes of the species, and land usage in the inhabited region. Secondary goals included revising the species on this list based on the findings in this project (i.e., some species may be suggested as not meriting formal listing, whereas others may be deserving of listing). The methods employed included a search of the pertinent literature relevant to each listed species of bryophyte coupled to an inventory of the Wesley Niles (UNLV) herbarium.

    Department of Fish and Game Biogeographic Data Branch The Vegetation Classification and Mapping Program List of California Terrestrial Natural Communities Recognized by The California Natural Diversity Database September 2003 Edition Introduction: This document supersedes all other lists of terrestrial natural communities developed by the Natural Diversity Database (CNDDB). It is based on the classification put forth in “A Manual of California Vegetation” (Sawyer and Keeler-Wolf 1995 and upcoming new edition). However, it is structured to be compatible with previous CNDDB lists (e.g., Holland 1986). For those familiar with the Holland numerical coding system you will see a general similarity in the upper levels of the hierarchy. You will also see a greater detail at the lower levels of the hierarchy. The numbering system has been modified to incorporate this richer detail. Decimal points have been added to separate major groupings and two additional digits have been added to encompass the finest hierarchal detail. One of the objectives of the Manual of California Vegetation (MCV) was to apply a uniform hierarchical structure to the State’s vegetation types. Quantifiable classification rules were established to define the major floristic groups, called alliances and associations in the National Vegetation Classification (Grossman et al. 1998). In this document, the alliance level is denoted in the center triplet of the coding system and the associations in the right hand pair of numbers to the left of the final decimal. The numbers of the alliance in the center triplet attempt to denote relationships in floristic similarity. For example, the Chamise-Eastwood Manzanita alliance (37.106.00) is more closely related to the Chamise- Cupleaf Ceanothus alliance (37.105.00) than it is to the Chaparral Whitethorn alliance (37.205.00).

However, there has been little research into many of the organisms that comprise these ecosystems, one being the desert night lizard (Xantusia vigilis). Our study examined the relationship between the common X. vigilis and the Mojave yucca (Yucca schidigera). We investigated whether X. vigilis exhibits habitat preference for fallen Y. schidigera log microhabitats and what factors make certain log microhabitats more suitable for X. vigilis inhabitation. We found that X. vigilis preferred Y. schidigera logs that were larger in circumference and showed no preference for dead or live clonal stands of Y. schidigera. When invertebrates were present, X. vigilis was approximately 50% more likely to also be present. These results suggest that X. vigilis have preferences for different types of Y. schidigera logs and logs where invertebrates are present. These findings are important as they help in understanding one of the Mojave Desert’s most abundant reptile species and the ecosystems of the Mojave Desert as a whole.
