Lamentations 1 Lamentations 1:1 How lonely sits the city that once was full of people! She has become like a widow who was once great among the nations. The princess among the provinces has become a vassal. Gendered Lament This chapter, like most in the book, is an extended acrostic based on the twenty- two letters of the alef-bet (Hebrew alphabet). Chapters 1, 2 and 4 have twenty-two verses, oneCOPYRIGHTED for each letter of the alef-bet; the MATERIALfirst word of the first verse begins with alef, the first letter of the alef-bet, the first word of the second verse begins with bet, the second letter, and so forth. The personification of Zion as a woman characterizes the first two chapters of the book. It is a feature facilitated by the fact that ir1 (the Hebrew word for city) is feminine, and is a motif shared with some other biblical books (cf. Sawyer 1989 on Isaiah). Parallels to the presentation of Jerusalem as a widowed city are to be found in other ancient Near Eastern lit- erature (Cohen 1973), and there are other affinities with lament material in the ancient world, especially in Mesopotamia (Dobbs-Allsopp 1993). The opening verse of the book of Lamentations powerfully brings together collective catastrophe in history (‘How lonely sits the city that once was full of people!’) with the deepest and most personal of individual human losses (‘like a widow’). In this combination we find a key to the power of this small book to speak to numerous different human situations and conditions. It is common- place to read this first chapter, and the next, as an empathetic account in which the narrator stands in solidarity with the bereaved widow. Such a stance is found as early as the Christian Fathers. In his Funeral Oration on Meletius Gregory of Nyssa (who died as Bishop of Antioch), (born Neocaesarea, Cappadocia, Turkey, c.335; died Nyssa, Turkey, c.395) draws on the first verses of Lamentations for pastoral purposes: ‘You have heard certain mournful and lamenting words of Jeremiah, with which he bewailed Jerusalem as a deserted city, and how among other expressions of passionate grief he added this, “The ways of Zion do mourn” [Lam 1:4]. These words were uttered then, but now they have been realized. For when the news of our calamity shall have been spread abroad, then will the ways be full of mourning crowds’ (Wenthe 2009: 276). Gregory encourages his grieving audience to identify with tragic Jerusalem. But for many readers in modern times, even when identification with Zion persists, the language used in Lamentations has become seriously problematic. In ‘Hiding Behind the Naked Women in Lamentations: a Recriminative Response’, (1999), Deryn Guest presents a powerful and extensive exploration of the metaphor of Zion as a woman, informed by the exposure of the ‘ pornoprophetic’ nature of much biblical literature by feminist critics such as Exum (1995) and Weems (1995). Guest pieces together (‘re-members’) the pic- ture of Zion, isolated and without comfort (Lam 1:2, 16, 17, 21), exposed to humiliating nakedness (Lam 1:8), and robbed of her former dignity (Lam 2:15). Like many other interpreters, Guest finds reference to rape, not only in Lam 5:11 but also in this opening passage, in Lam 1:10: ‘The foe has laid hands on all her precious things; she has even seen the nations invade her sanctuary’ (see further on Lam 1:10, and also on Lam 1:8–9, 15–16; 2:21–2; 4:13–15). What is more, Zion blames herself (e.g. Lam 1:20, ‘I have been very rebellious’). In short, she suffers utter humiliation at the hands of an avenging deity and provides the focal point for the guilt and shame of Israel. Guest argues that even if this metaphor was intended as a call to repentance for the commu- nity as a whole, led as it was by men, the female figure provides an easy scape- goat behind which the male community may hide. Another case in which the metaphorical nature of such language about women is at risk of becoming obscured is Ezekiel 23, a text broadly contemporary to Lamentations. In Ezek 23:48 the prophet (or perhaps a redactor not well attuned to the metaphor) declares: ‘Thus will I put an end to lewdness in the land, so that all women may take warning and not commit lewdness as you have done’ (cf. Moughtin- Mumby 2008: 163). ‘The image of Zion/Woman found in Lamentations should be resisted’, Guest contends, ‘because it endorses a stereotypical view of women and sanctions a series of abusing punishments’ (422). Among the stereotypes compounded is that women attract the abuse against them; the opening chapter ‘provides an exposition on the just deserts of wilful provocation’ (423). Guest also exposes the complicity of male commentators with the book’s rhetorical thrust. Biblical studies have often, she says, been so preoccupied with questions of genre and with ancient Near Eastern parallels that one ‘receives the impression that personification is merely a figurative device; it does not relate to any real female physical distress, and therefore there is no sense of its offensive nature’ (421). Such studies ‘erase, mask or simply do not consider the social realities from which the image derives’, claims Guest (426). In such ways, the blame encoded in the text is reinforced in exegesis, with ‘a shared value system between writer and reader’ that is ‘offensive and damaging’ (445). Whereas reception history is often a story of readers finding new meanings in old texts, we also encounter cases, as here, in which original meanings often prove uncongenial or even unacceptable in fresh contexts, as new circum- stances and new sensibilities challenge continuity with the values of the ancient text. At this point, for some, the status of the text comes into question. Guest herself asks what, in the light of all this, can be done with Lamentations and she concludes that, for her at least, it cannot have authority as Scripture: ‘I person- ally opt to stand with those who make a complete stand against the text per se and would advocate the removal of such texts from the biblical canon’ (439). But censoring the Bible so that a smaller canon is retained is not an option that all readers will favor. But for most of those who retain a relationship with the Bible as Scripture, whether Jewish or Christian, it is important that the whole canon designated within a particular tradition is retained and wrestled with, even if, as in the present case, some features of the text are so troubling that continuity with scriptural tradition comes at times close to breaking point. Naming Necessity According to Jewish tradition, the books of the Hebrew Bible are typically named after a book’s reputed author, such as Ezekiel, after a central character, such as Ruth, or after the first significant word of the book; the book of Genesis, for example, is known in Jewish tradition as Bereishit (‘In the beginning’). The practice of naming a biblical book after its first significant word can present a problem when it comes to translating the Hebrew name into English. The book of Lamentations is an excellent example. ‘Lamentations’ is a translation of the Greek Threni, which means ‘Laments’ and well describes the content of the book, which is indeed a series of laments. On the other hand, the first Hebrew word of the book, eicha,2 is almost untranslatable (though NJPS does well with ‘Alas!’). Robbed of its context, as is almost bound to be the case in a one-word title, the literal translation, ‘How’, does not begin to give a sense of what the book is all about. One solution to the problem of naming Eicha in English emerges from a contribution by David Shatz to Contending with Catastrophe: Jewish Perspectives on September 11th (Broyde 2011), a collection of essays covering Jewish legal, ethical and theological responses to the events of September 2001.

The depth of pathos as the writer probed the suffering of Zion and his own suf­ fering is unprecedented. Each chapter is an entity in itself, a com­ plete poem.1 The most obvious literary device utilized by the poet is the acrostic; that is, poems are built around the letters of the alpha­ bet.

Paying special attention to the discursive forms of the Talmud, I show how juxtapositions of narrative and legal dialectics cooperate in generating the Talmud's distinctive ethics, which I characterize as an attentiveness to the “exceptional particulars” of life. To demonstrate the features and rewards of a literary approach, I offer a sustained reading of a single tractate from the Babylonian Talmud, ʿAvoda Zara (AZ). AZ and other talmudic discussions about non-Jews offer a rich resource for considerations of ethics because they are centrally concerned with constituting social relationships and with examining aspects of human experience that exceed the domain of Jewish law. AZ investigates what distinguishes Jews from non-Jews, what Jews and non- Jews share in common, and what it means to be a human being. I read AZ as a cohesive literary work unified by the overarching project of examining the place of humanity in the cosmos.

    Fact Sheet for “Doom” Lamentations 1-5 Pastor Bob Singer 03/24/2019 We have come to the book of Lamentations. The title of this book… “Lamentations”… aptly describes its content. These five chapters are filled with gut-wrenching pain and anguish over the destruction of Jerusalem and what the Jewish people had experienced and were experiencing. It’s not an easy book to wrap your heart around, but there is a small island of verses right in the middle that have long been a focus of encouragement for God’s people. But let’s begin with a little of the background of this book. 1. It is generally assumed that Jeremiah wrote it, even though its author is not identified. It was written at the right time for Jeremiah to have authored it. And many of the themes found here are also found in the book of Jeremiah. 2. Each chapter is a highly structured poem. The first four are acrostics based on the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet. Each stanza begins with the appropriate letter. Unfortunately, there is no way to show this in translations. This is why chapters 1,2 and 4 have 22 verses, and why chapter 3 has 66. Chapter 5 also has 22 verses, but it is not an acrostic. Here’s a run-down of their lives. 1. Famine was an every-day threat. The Babylonians had laid siege to the city for a year and a half. They cut off the supply of food for the city. And the famine grew ever worse.

    Lamentations. 1. The Book of lamentations consists of five separate poems on the destruction of Jerusalem in 586 B.C. 2. These funeral songs and prayers describe both the horrors of the extended siege (e.g. Lamentations 4:4-5) and the destruction itself. 3. No other book captures so vividly the despair of seeing Zion destroyed, of seeing the holy city and its temple become a mockery to the nations. 4. Lamentations is traditionally attributed to Jeremiah, which explains its usual placement after the Book of Jeremiah, but the book itself does not name an author. 5. Whether by Jeremiah or an unknown poet, the book is surely an eyewitness account of those wretched days. 6. The five poems were penned, probably not long after Jerusalem's fall in 586 B.C., by someone who had seen the slaughter of many of his people,the enslavement of others, and the abject despair of the few survivors. TEMPLE AFIRE (Lamentations 2:5-7) 1. Temples were the focal point of civic life and the target for invaders. 1. 2.. The patron deities of the city were believed to dwell in the temples. 2. Festivals were held around temples, and valuables were deposited in them: they were the earliest banks. 3. For invaders, the capture of the central temple served several purposes, not the least of which was obtaining the wealth stored there. 4. To take the temple was also to show that the gods of the city had chosen the conquerors over the local inhabitants. This meant that the conquerors were now the legitimate rulers of the people, land, and any possessions.

Every book of the Bible has one dominating theme – Jesus is the Christ. “Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. He told them, ‘This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.’” (Luke 24:45-47) Jesus is the Christ who will suffer and die. Jesus is the Christ who will rise from the dead on the third day. Jesus is the Christ who will forgive the sins of all who repent. Jesus is the Christ who will be preached to the nations. 2. The Old Testament that Jesus read contained the same 39 books as our English Bibles but was arranged in a different order. It had three sections – the Law, the Prophets, and the Writings. “Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.” (Luke 24:44) The final section of the Old Testament is the Writings. Whereas the Prophets looked back to what happened to Israel and why it happened in order to call the nation to repent and return to God, the Writings looked forward to the hope that was coming to those who repent, through a King like David, and showed those who did, how to live faithfully in all of life’s circumstances as they waited for His arrival. This means that though the books found in the Writings sections were written at different points in Israel’s history, it was after the Babylonian exile was over, that they were collected together to give the remnant hope and guidance as they waited.

    The Book of Lamentations, an Introductory Study [Texas Pastoral Study Conference, April 28, 1981] by: Pastor Thomas Valleskey The Name of the Book and its Place in the Canon meaning, “Ah, how!” In ,אביה ,In the Hebrew text the Book is named after its first word the Septuagint, however, the book receives its name from the contents of the book. The Septuagint title simply reads qrenoi (tears) and adds a subscript ‘of Jeremiah.’ The Latin Vulgate retains the title ‘tears’ (threni) and adds the interpretation, ‘id est lamentationes Jeremiae prophetae’. It is from the Vulgate that the English translations take their title for this book, The Lamentations of Jeremiah. In the Hebrew canon Lamentations was placed just after Ruth in the Megilloth (rolls)of the Kethubhim (writings) or Hagiographa (sacred writings), the Hebrew canon being divided into the torah (the writings of Moses), the nebhim (the writings of the called prophets) and the ketubhim (the writings of other holy men of God). The Septuagint places Lamentations after the prophecy of Jeremiah and the apocryphal book of Baruch, and this position was later adopted by the other versions, including the Vulgate. The English versions (and Luther) adopt the Septuagint placement of the book. The authenticity of its place in the Old Testament canon has never been questioned. The Authorship of Lamentations According to both Jewish and Christian tradition the author of Lamentations was the Prophet Jeremiah. This tradition already appears in the Septuagint, “And it came to pass after Israel had been taken away into captivity and Jerusalem had been laid waste that Jeremiah sat weeping and lamented this lamentation over Jerusalem and said.” The Vulgate repeats these words and adds to them, “with a bitter spirit sighing and wailing.” The early Church Fathers, such as Origen and Jerome, unanimously accepted Jeremiah as the author of this book.

In Focus Karen and Tim stood with their neighbors, in shock over the fire that was eating up their apartment complex. As they stared in disbelief, Karen broke down and began to wail, “I can’t believe what has happened, we lost everything, and so many people have been displaced from their homes all because of someone’s negligence.” The fire had spread quickly, taking one whole building and threatening another. The first responders were still putting out the last flames and seeing to those who had breathed too much smoke. Tim wanted to do something to help comfort his neighbors but didn’t want to leave Karen, who was heartbroken over the loss of their home. “It’s not just the possessions, Tim. It’s our history, our life together, your mother’s photo albums, my paintings. And now it’s all in ashes,” she exclaimed. “How can we rebuild?” Tim suggested they pray, but Karen was still too angry. Overcome with emotion she asked, “God, where are You in this? What did we do to deserve this?” Tim held his wife and consoled her. “We need to believe God, Karen. Cornelia Linde In late medieval Latin Bibles, the visual make-up of the Book of Lamentations catches the reader’s eye: the text consists of five distinct short chapters and each verse of the first four chapters is preceded by the name of a Hebrew letter, in alphabetic order, usually written in red ink. This inclusion of the Hebrew letters is a common feature in manuscripts of the Late Medieval Bible. The place of Lamentations within the biblical canon is stable: it is placed after the Book of Jeremiah, to whom it was attributed, and the transition between the two books is usually bridged by a short preface derived from the Septuagint tradition: Et factum est postquam in captivitatem reductus est Israel et Hierusalem deserta est sedit Hieremias flens et planxit lamentationem hanc in Hierusalem et dixit.1 In contrast to other prefaces to biblical books, this brief passage was not usually labelled. Instead, it was incorporated into the text.
