The Yahara Watershed, or land area that drains into the Yahara River and lakes, covers 359 square miles, more than a quarter of Dane County. Much of the wa- tershed is farmed; however, the watershed also contains most of the urban land of the Madison metropolitan area. In addition, the Yahara Watershed includes Lake Wingra Yahara Waterways – Water Trail Guide 3 some of the largest wetlands that are left in Dane County. The lakes’ watershed includes all or parts of five cities, seven villages and sixteen towns, and is home to about 350,000 people. -

Yahara Waterways – Water Trail Guide Some of the Largest Wetlands That Are Left in Dane County
This guide is based on Taychopera: A Canoe Guide to Dane County’s Key to Map Symbols 4 Lakes developed in 1984 by the Dane County Environmental Council with text written by Jane Licht. Taychopera means “four Accessible boat launch lakes” in the Ho Chunk tongue. Taychopera is the glacial-formed chain of lakes, marshes and river now known as Mendota, Monona, Accessible fishing pier Waubesa, Kegonsa, Upper and Lower Mud, and the Yahara River. Madison Environmental Justice Organization The State of Shoreline Fishing in Dane County A report on fishing, fish consumption and public health advisories July 2008 INTRODUCTION Background Fishing is important to many Wisconsinites and to the state economy, and state tourism and natural resources managers promote fishing quite extensively. Fishing is also big business in Dane County, but not much information is available about urban shoreline fishing (as opposed to boat fishing in lakes and rivers). This report aims to shed a little light on those who fish from shorelines and who eat locally-caught fish, focusing on people of color and low-income families. The Madison Environmental Justice Organization (MEJO) was founded in 2006, with a mission to educate the community about environmental justice issues, work to address them, and support environmental justice for the benefit of the general public. We have been working with people of color and low-income residents for more than two years discussing toxins in locally-caught fish, and learning about cultural practices regarding fishing and preparing and eating fish. Due to mercury and PCB levels in fish, the State of Wisconsin has issued fish advisory warnings for anglers and those who eat locally caught fish from inland Wisconsin waters. Yet many anglers are not aware of these advisories. Levels of mercury, PCBs and other toxins that concentrate in fish are a known public health hazard. Shoreline anglers catch and consume many pan fish that may have lower toxin levels than larger fish, but when consumed in high quantities they may exceed levels recommended to avoid negative health effects; they also frequently catch and consume larger fish, which tend to have higher concentrations of toxins. -

MADISON AND DANE COUNTY ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH REPORT CARD SERIES - 2014 WATER QUALITY INTRODUCTION Public Health Madison & Dane County is pleased to present the Water Quality section of the 2014 edition of the Environmental Health Report Card series. The Environmental Report Card provides the most recent data analysis available of Dane County health issues that involve the interaction and subsequent impact between environmental quality and human health. The data presented in this report builds upon prior editions of the Environmental Health Report Card and provides a review of environmental health topics relevant to Dane County and the City of Madison. The data from this report has been collected from a wide variety of stake holders including academia, private industry, and public health professionals and agencies throughout the county, state, and federal levels. When possible, the report compares the data collected for the City of Madison and Dane County to established standards, desired goals and objectives, and average values of other communities or the State of Wisconsin. Additional resources used to help assess this data have come from the Health People 2020 Objectives and Healthiest Wisconsin 2020 Objectives and Focus Areas. Objectives listed in these documents focus on several areas of public health including environmental issues. Although these objectives are not always measurable at the local level, they provide a solid foundation to effectively assess the environmental issues that impact public health in Dane County. The Environmental Public Health Report Card continues to evolve with each new edition. In the current edition, each section of the report (Air Quality, Water Quality, Food Protection, Healthy Homes and Communities, and Sustainability) will be released separately, approximately one section each quarter of the year, and followed by a full Executive Summary when each of the reports in the series have been released. -

Beneath The Surface: Urban Fishing and Environmental Justice Makie Matsumoto-Hervol Jessica Duma Mitch Johnson Ellie Shand Geography 565 Prof. Bill Gartner December 12, 2013 1 Abstract Urban fishing and shoreline fishing are popular year round activities that have received little attention in research and literature. We specifically looked at Monona Bay and Lake Wingra in Madison to examine the various factors that influence health risk fishing and consuming fish in these waters. While little data exists on definitive measures of known toxicants in the sediment and fish, the history of development around the lakes indicates many toxicants are present and have serious implications for the health of both aquatic ecosystems and anglers consuming fish from these lakes. Proper assessment of the extent of risk that anglers face are thus complicated by limited information. From our preliminary research, we found a pattern of disproportionate risk among minority anglers within Madison and in other states due to variation in fish consumption, cultural and subsistence influences, and disproportionate awareness of risk tied to lack of access to risk communication materials. Through our own collected data of interviews, observations, and informal interviews our data also suggests a similar pattern of higher risk among minority members of the angling community. Our findings illustrate the need for more toxicant testing of fish in Madison in addition to alternative means of current risk communication to more adequately assess risk exposure and close disparities of risk among community members. 2 This paper is accompanied by a documentary digitally archived at Minds@UW. 3 I. The Lake Wingra basin, which includes a small eutrophic lake within the city of Madison, Wisconsin, is partly natural and partly urbanized. Measured and estimated inflow and outflow to and from the lake in one year (June 1972 to May 1973) was about 4.5 metres (15 feet)--approximately twice the volume of the lake. Lake gains are about 25 percent from precipitation on the lake surface, a from nearly equal amounts of surface runoff and ground-water inflow. -

ABSTRACT Parl of a larger study on the biology and water quality of the 4 Yahara River lakes Mendota, Monona, Waubesa, and Kegonsa-this report summarizes fi shery data from the extensive amount of published and unpublished surveys and research studies that were conducted from the late 1800s through 1985 on these lakes, which are located in and around Madison, Wisconsin. These surveys and studies were conducted principally by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, its predecessor the Wisconsin Conservation Department, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Major data sources include creel surveys, rough fish removal records, fish population surveys (using boom shockers, fyke nets, shoreline seines, and survey seines), stocking records, fish distribution surveys, and research projects focusing on individual species. To gain insight into the lakes' fishery dynamics, lake environment data were also compiled; top ics include morphometric characteristics, water temperature, dissolved oxygen, lake fer tility, toxics, macrophytes, invertebrate food o rganis ms (zooplankton and macroinvertebrates), wetlands, and water level changes. The report focuses on ecological requirements and relative abundance of 17 fish species that are or have been major components of the fishery of the Yahara lakes: yellow perch, bluegill, black and white crappie, white and yellow bass, largemouth and smallmouth bass, walleye, northern pike, cisco, common carp, freshwater drum, bullheads (yellow, brown, and black), and white sucker.
