- Narrative: Successful trade and industrial development strategies are always complimented by a sound operational framework as evidenced in many countries. The most critical is not the designing of policy and strategy papers but rather how to translate the theory into practice. The AeTrade Initiatives are aligned with several AU policy frameworks including The AU Small Medium Enterprises Strategy which is designed to unleash the potential of small and medium-sized enterprises and industries (SME/Is) as well as microenterprises (informal sector) and entrepreneurs to create employment and promote intra-regional and intra- African trade by integrating African SME/Is and MSMEs into regional and global value chains. The Strategy’s vision is to develop competitive, diversified and sustainable economies underpinned by dynamic, entrepreneurial and industrial sectors that generate employment, reduce poverty and foster social inclusion. African exports rebounded with 34% growth year on year in March 2021. As continental economic integration continues to move forward, African firms will benefit from additional opportunities to accelerate the recovery by creating new value chains and taking advantage of emerging market opportunities. This session highlights the new digital tools available through the African Trade Observatory dashboard (https://ato.africa ) to help firms and business support organisations identify and compare market opportunities, and policymakers monitor detailed trade performance and policy impacts. Armed with timely and relevant trade intelligence, African entrepreneurs will be better equipped for data-driven analysis and ready to connect with potential buyers across the continent. Policymakers and officials from the African Union, Regional Economic Communities and African Union Member States will have access to trade related indicators, thereby strengthening evidence- based policymaking.
