Abstract This study employs a multimodal close reading to examine and compare how NBC’s Nightly News and various primetime CNN news shows construct the story of the Berlin Wall’s opening from 1990 through 2009. It does so first by examining the networks’ 1989 coverage and assessing the themes and ideologies circulated when the Berlin Wall’s opening was breaking news. These themes and ideologies are used as a baseline to assess anniversary coverage that aired from 1990 through 2009. In the process of this close reading, special attention is paid to silences and omissions amid images and spoken discourses; the circulation of World War II and Holocaust-related discourses; and the influence of hypermediacy and liveness on the programming. The results show that the coverage coheres into two distinct typologies: anniversary-as-process and anniversary-as-spectacle, two new concepts introduced by this dissertation.

  • Sesame Street Platinum All-Time Favorites
“Sesame Street: Platinum All-Time Favorites” (1995) Added to the National Registry: 2014 Essay by Kathryn A. Ostrofsky (guest post)* Joe Raposo Original album cover Jeff Moss “Sesame Street,” which premiered in 1969 and is still producing new episodes 50 years later, is one of the most recognizable and beloved programs in the history of television. Its meticulously- researched curriculum and its memorable puppet characters have long been acknowledged to have been important factors both in “Sesame Street’s” popularity and in its contributions to American culture, but its music has been just as critical. As a musical comedy-variety show, “Sesame Street” has broadcast thousands of songs and released over one hundred albums, along with scores of singles and book-and-audio sets. Catchy melodies attracted preschoolers’ attention, repetitious song structures served as teaching tools, and professional performances rendered the children’s program entertaining for adults who controlled the dial. Meanwhile, releasing albums extended “Sesame Street’s” lessons beyond the broadcast hour and helped fund continued production of the show. “Sesame Street” reached nearly every American preschooler for decades, cutting across lines of ethnicity, region, and social class. Thus, although “Sesame Street” is rarely mentioned in lists of popular music, it is probable that more Americans can sing “C is for Cookie” than know most of the chart-topping hits of bygone years. The “Platinum All-Time Favorites” album is a compilation of recordings from “Sesame Street’s” first 25 years, released in 1995 by Sony Wonder on cassette and CD. It represents “Sesame Street’s” prolific output of broadcasts and recordings, which served as a common cultural experience for generations of American audiences.

Julia, for example, can wield a paintbrush and sing alongside her Muppet peers. But she will also possess limited verbal skills, and will sometimes demonstrate the kind of repetitive hand-flapping that is often a visible sign of autism. But "Sesame Street" will also strive to depict Julia—who has a mop of bright orange hair—as just another playful girl on the block: a sweet, curious and embraced addition to the beloved family of Big Bird, Elmo and Abby Cadabby. Holma Abstract Expertise is a key currency in today’s knowledge economy. Yet as experts increasingly move across work contexts, how expertise translates across contexts is less well understood. Here, we examine how a shift in context—which reorders the relative attention experts pay to distinct types of audiences—redefines what it means to be an expert. Our study’s setting is an established expertise in the creative industry: puppet manipulation. Through an examination of U.S. puppeteers’ move from stage to screen (i.e., film and television), we show that, although the two settings call on mostly similar techniques, puppeteers on stage ground their claims to expertise in a dialogue with spectators and view expertise as achieving believability; by contrast, puppeteers on screen invoke the need to deliver on cue when dealing with producers, directors, and co-workers and view expertise as achieving task mastery. When moving between stage and screen, puppeteers therefore prioritize the needs of certain audiences over others’ and gradually reshape their own views of expertise. Our findings embed the nature of expertise in experts’ ordering of types of audiences to attend to and provide insights for explaining how expertise can shift and become co-opted by workplaces. Keywords expertise, audiences, puppetry, film and television Expertise has become a fundamental currency of cases (Abbott 1988:8).
