I look back over the years and realize how fortunate I was to be influenced by them. Some I got to know very well such as Dr. Tony Campolo who was in college with me and later became a colleague when I was an administrator at Eastern and he became a professor. He also wrote the foreword to my book John Wanamaker:King of Merchants. Adkins, Paul Spenser - Opera singer. I had him present a concert at Eastern College and struck up a friendship with him. In 1981 he was the winner of the first Luciano Pavoratti International Voice Competition. He is now with the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and is a recording artist. Allen, Dr. David D., of Pleasantville, NJ, - he said he was won to Christ by my grandfather, Rev. Walter H. Ott who was the founding pastor of the Linwood Community Church, Linwood, NJ. David D. Allen became Pastor of Church of the Open Bible, Trenton, NJ and Calvary Baptist Church, Hazel Park, Michigan where he served for over thirty years. I remember so well when he visited our home and spoke at the church when I was minister at the Bethany Temple Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia. At any given time—day or night, during the season or not—one would be hard-pressed to fl ip through the television channels for long without encountering at least one representation of the NFL, from recaps of games to commercials that somehow feature the league. Many of these images derive from a single site, the NFL Films archive. Since 1965, NFL Films, the NFL’s subsidiary fi lm production company, has documented every one of the league’s games and fi lmed thousands of interviews with its players and coaches. It uses this footage to create dramatic, made-for-television fi lms that glorify the NFL and its history. First, the film problematizes the notion of head injury as merely “part of the game” and a risk that players ostensibly understand when they enter the National Football League. Second, the film’s depiction of Mike Webster’s “unruly” body further de-naturalizes concussions and contests the mascu- line ideal of bodily sacrifice in pro football.
