Padre’s Corner SEPTEMBER 22, 2019 TWENTY FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME “Professional football in America is a special game, a unique game. It is a rare game. The men who play it make it so. All of them are fearless. All of them are strong, quick. And all of them are part of a story that began long ago. A story written by men who found, in the sport, a demanding measure for their own courage and ability.” John Facenda authored this thought of courage on the playing field of life, for all professions not just football. He was born on August 8, 1913 in Portsmouth, Virginia. Starting first as a radio/television announcer in Philadelphia, after graduating from Catholic schools, he later became the “Voice of God” for “NFL Films/Football Follies.” He died on September 26, 1984 in Havertown, Pennsylvania. I am fortunate to have an autographed album he narrated about the “Nativity.” God gave him an iconic voice. He was a co-anchor for the 1979 visit of Pope John Paul II to Philadelphia. One such football player who played “on the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field,” as described by Facenda, was Ed White who played from the late sixties to the late eighties with first the Minnesota Vikings, before later the San Diego Chargers. Ed texted me back on June 25: “Hello Father Bill. The Vikings are putting together a reunion of the 1969 Super Bowl Team. I need Gary’s (Cuozzo) info for them. Thanks Big Ed. Hope all is well. I am reading a book, Being more like Jesus. My goal a mirror of Jesus, need prayers.” After providing Ed the phone number of Gary, Ed did respond: “I had a nice visit (chat) with Gary. Hope we can both make the 50th anniversary Super Bowl reunion.” A friend from California to both Ed and I texted me: “My parents were friends with Ed’s mother-in-law. I went to the same high school as Ed (Chino). He graduated in first class of 1966, me in 1983. And then his house burned down years later in horrible fire in Julian (California) that wiped out 100’s of homes. He is beloved in our community to this day, even though he lives in the mountains of Julian. His daughter died about 25 years ago, fell out of a truck while sitting in back. She was holding onto their Christmas gifts when the truck made a turn, and she fell out the back and hit her head. He won the strongest man in the NFL competition one year, and when he retired in 1985 no offensive lineman in the history of the NFL had ever played in more games. In the house fire everything burned, but his Super Bowl rings. He rebuilt on the (same) property. A nice modular home and a studio about 30 feet in front of it – to paint. Ed is so proud you have his (two) paintings. He really is.” This story about Ed White is not to brag that I know an esteemed member of the National Football League, but to extract from his human life lessons of faith and perseverance as we face the mortal and moral weaknesses of life. He spends the twilight years of his life seeking the strength of God in all things, which is how we met. That capacity of the delicate human spirit to embrace the arduous and difficult, and transform its bitter lemon taste into lemonade through the tenacity of prayer is the teaching point in this reflection. This internal power helped friends of mine from Yonkers, who back in July lost their daughter Allison at the age of 26 to an addictive disease. The teller who unexpectedly lost her job at the New Jersey bank I frequent is emboldened to survive. I turn to Him for guidance in pastoring two churches, and weathering the emotional fires of my Mom’s death on May 12 and my brother Joe on August 17. All do likewise. For those of us who take this component of faith seriously, in the midst of seismic confusion over the complexities of life, the strength to do so is readily available to the outstretched hand of Jesus in His Father’s Name. Cultures of the past dabbled in pagan god worship, before Jesus entered physically the world stage of events to counteract those ungodly philosophies. Tenets thousands of years ago taught the civil duty to make human and animal sacrifices to these pagan entities, while encouraging the elderly to clock out of life early so family members could reap and harvest financial savings. Slavery in human history has the same inhuman concepts, as does the horrifying memories of concentration camps during World War II and other annals of history. The sanctity of life is never respected in these pagan thoughts, be it the unborn child or senior citizen. Jesus single-handedly elevated the notion of true human worth and dignity. No Catholic or Christian today should support laws that support modern-day pagan practices, such as abortion and euthanasia. God provides the graces to be vigilant. This compelling prayer came into my possession recently. “Heavenly Father, I call on you right now in a special way. It is through your power that I was created. Every breath I take, every morning I wake, and every moment of every hour I live under your power. Father, I ask you now to touch me with that same power. For if you created me from nothing, you can certainly recreate me. Fill me with healing power of your spirit. Cast out anything that should not be in my life. Mend what is broken. Root out any unproductive cells. Open any blocked arteries or veins, and rebuild any damaged areas. Remove all inflammation and cleanse any infection. Let the warmth of your healing love pass through my body to make now any unhealthy areas, so that my body will function the way you created it to function. And Father, restore me to full health in mind and body so that I may serve you the rest of my life. I ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.” (CONT’D ON PAGE 5) SACRED HEART 2nd Collection- SAINT FRANCIS PARISH GROUNDS Monday, September 23 Monday, September 23 9:00am Carly Sigelbaum Sacred Heart-St Francis Weekly Collection 7:00am Communion Service By Dad (Louie) September 14-15, 2019 1st Collection $9,583 12:00pm Mary King 2 nd Collection $3,814 By Henry Sawoska TOTAL $13,397 Tuesday, September 24 Tuesday, September 24 9:00am John Sikora 7:00am Communion Service By Doug & Claire Maset 12:00pm Jeanne Sabo By Tomi MacFarland Wednesday, September 25 Wednesday, September 25 9:00am Lee Shaw Sacred Heart Mass Attendance 7:00am Communion Service By Walker Family September 14-15 5:30 105 12:00pm Bill Cathcart 10:00 172 By Wife Barbara & Family 12:00 213 TOTAL 490 Thursday, September 26 Thursday, September 26 9:00am Jeffrey Gilbert 7:00am Communion Service By Angela Gilbert 12:00pm Joseph Damroth By Rich & Mary Irons Friday, September 27 Saint Francis Mass Attendance Friday, September 27 9:00am Donald Glynn Sr September 14-15 7:00am Communion Service By Elizabeth & Beth Glynn 4:00 202 12:00pm Richard Varela 8:30 175 By Henry Sawoska 1:30 78 TOTAL 455 Saturday, September 28 Mass Intentions for This Weekend Saturday, September 28 9:00am John relyea Jr. September 21-22, 2019 -Sacred Heart 4:00pm Walter & Toni Lastowski By Sisters Jacqueline & Lucy 5:30pm Lawrence Porvaznik By Lastowski Family Pro Life Mass & Procession Valmir Sasso 10:00am Aurora, Anna & Sebastiano Raciti Robert Reno 5:30pm Senator William J.
