“life isn't measured by how many breaths we Whilst through our social media take but by the mo- news feeds, one NHT Magazine reader really stood out to us and this was Emily ments that take our Curtis. Emily was doing something very breath away...” different to what we normally see… … We could not resist contacting Emily as we just had to ask her all about it! In Emily’s own words, she tells us all about her journey to tackless riding.

ABOUT EMILY was going to go back to her owners. I was in the process of selling on my ex-racer who I had recently re–schooled, with I started riding when I was about 4 years old and was lucky the idea of having a break from horses, as I had slightly enough to have my own horse when I was 13 years old. I fallen out of love with it all. It was a wet windy day; I had spent many years riding and helping out at my local riding just had the last ride on my TB before he left for his new school every weekend, like all us horse crazy girls do. I soon home which confirmed exactly why I needed the time away became the one that got put on the naughty, quirky horses, from horses. My sister wasn’t very well so I begrudgingly and if I’m honest it was this that lit the spark for my love of said I would hack Minnie for her. I threw on a head collar a challenge! and went out bareback in the rain; little did I know this was the beginning of a very special partnership. My mum had horses all through her younger years, and encouraged me to take up riding, so I have her to thank for I spent most of the hack crying my eyes out because I had my passion, among many other things; she gave up a great forgotten what it felt like to have fun and enjoy riding, it deal and scarified a lot for me to continue my journey with was then that I knew this little horse wasn’t going anywhere, these wonderful animals so for that; thanks mum! I truly believe Minnie and I were meant to be together! I have been lucky enough to have some really amazing horses in my life and some not so great, but each and every Photo credit: Crick Photography. one taught me something. From my very first horse Fred (a 16.2hh TB) who quickly taught me how hard the ground was, but if you fell down 10 times, to get up 11, to the late Storm (a 17.2hh TB x Cleveland Bay) who taught me how to put one foot in front of the other when I didn’t see a way to carry on. They say you have one horse in your life that defines you, that was him!

I could carry on talking about my past horses all day but let’s bring you up to now and my amazing little loan horse, Minnie!

Minnie is a 20yr old 15hh ISH, who was originally for my younger sister, but soon proved too sensitive for her and 3 NorthantsHorseTrader Magazine Since then, we have done a bit of everything; but if it ‘whoa’ on the neck strap; she’s a clever mare and soon picked involves going fast, jumping and having fun, Minnie and I it up with a lot of positive reinforcement. are very happy. I have never had a horse that I feel understands me the way WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO TRY TACKLESS RIDING? Minnie does; we are just on the same level. Because she is so sensitive and really feeds off her rider, she is truly the type that Tackless riding is something that I played around with when I not everyone can get on with. This was proved when out of was younger on my pony Cookie, but looking back that was curiosity I allowed someone else to ride her tackless, needless really only successful because she was a diamond! There is to say it didn’t end that well! It’s as simple as she gets me and really no other reason! I get her. In Minnie’s case it was slightly different, she may look like the Minnie is naturally an uptight horse that holds a lot of tension, ‘steady type’ but she is the most sensitive horse I have ever sat since riding tackless I have noticed such a huge improvement on, you really have to ride with your mind, this is one of the in this. It’s like the mental pressure of wearing tack just melts reasons I think we get on so well because she can absolutely away, she’s calmer and more relaxed, I think she just sees it as read mine! our down time. It has also improved massively her ability to stretch down, her tack etc. all fits correctly but it seems She has always been very strong and one day a very special knowing there is nothing in front of her she’s just so much lady said to me “it takes two to pull” How true! That sentence happier to work lower, which has improved her topline. resonated with me for a while until I thought well if there is no bit, neither of us can pull! I’ve always liked a challenge and We are both still learning and have a long way to go before thought well why not, so while hacking I just took her bridle it’s perfect, but we are loving the tackles journey. Recently I off… was lucky enough to be able to ride tackless at a wonderful XC schooling venue, this put what we had been practicing at Since then we hack, school, jump and jump XC at home home to the test. We kept it simple, but Minnie blew me away, tackless, its nowhere near perfect but we both love the it really was an absolute dream come true. freedom it gives us. It’s definitely something I would love to be able to do while I work in the Health and Safety sector so risk assessing and competing, but would need a lot more practice before this hazard perception is something I have to think of everyday, so where to happen. A lot of places will not allow it, which I do of course this crossed my mind when it came to tackless understand, but I hope in the future things will change. riding. I think there is a large difference between taking a risk and being reckless, Minnie is very sensitive to my seat and leg Until then, Minnie and I will continue to pursue our dreams and which helped massively as this is how I give most my aids enjoy each day that we have together, she is my very best normally meaning the reins were redundant most of the time.. friend and I trust her with my life, I am so grateful to her The farm which Minnie lives on is enclosed and I am lucky owners for allowing me to have her. enough to not have to leave when I hack, this was a huge factor because I knew if I were to fall, Minnie would be able Life is short, so why not do things that others wont; why not to make her way back to the barn without putting herself or take the chances, life isn't measured by how many breaths we others in danger; although I’m pretty sure she’d just take the take but by the moments that take our breath away... opportunity for a quick snack on the hay fields! Tackless is not something I would ever consider when on the roads! Proximal Suspensory Injury

he suspensory ligament is a structure in the lower part of the front and hind limbs. It runs from just Tbelow the knee/hock down the back of the cannon bone and branches to attach on the sesamoid bones at the back of the fetlock. The proximal portion is the upper third of the ligament.

Injury to the proximal portion of the suspensory ligament can occur because of a single overloading or traumatic event or as a result of chronic repetitive strain; with the latter most commonly seen in competition/sports horses.

Affected horses will commonly show a mild to moderate degree of lameness, however sometimes the only presenting complaint is poor performance such as, not wanting to go forwards or jump. Typically injury in the forelimbs presents as a sudden onset and Proximal Suspensory in the hind limbs has a slower onset. Other signs may include pain, swelling and heat from the affected area at the back of the cannon bone. Body

Diagnosis of proximal suspensory injury is made using nerve blocks to localise the source of the lameness and then ultrasonography to visualise the affected Suspensory Branches area. Treatment can consist of rest and anti- inflammatories but this carries a poorer prognosis for return to athletic activity and often surgery is required; where the nerve supplying the area is If you are at all concerned about your removed and some of fascia surrounding the horse’s change in performance or any other health ligament is cut to release the pressure caused by worries please contact your vet. swelling of the injured suspensory ligament. However, all was not as it seemed as he had A rehabilitation programme was introduced, he was treated terrible Sarcoids, especially between his legs that looked every 3-4 weeks for 4 months and was being lunged to keep ready to burst! 27 NorthantsHorseTrader Magazine STRIDE GUIDE By JK Equestrian All horses naturally have a different length of stride. These measurements are a general guide and normally work well. They should be adjusted to suit each individual horse (or pony).

Once you have established the correct length of stride that suits your horse or pony, and that you are riding these distances confidently and accurately; you can then begin to adjust the striding to encourage either shortening or lengthening. Once the fences are increased in height, you may find you also need to adjust the distance between each fence.

As lockdown restrictions eased and the eventing season As we head into the Autumn and the hunter trials come picked up, I managed to take Charlie to a couple unaffiliated creeping up I look forward to getting Charlie out and back in one day events. his element!

We Kickstarted with Keysoe unaffiliated 90cm where Stay Safe Charlie had a rather excitable dressage, an unfortunate pole on the last fence, but we finished off with a clear cross Sophie & Charlie xx country - inside the time! I was very pleased with him as this was our first 90cm one day event.

As we headed into August and the ground got harder I decided to take it easy at Offchurch Bury Unaffiliated by entering the 80cm. Charlie produced an easy double clear finishing on his dressage score and ended in top 10 in his section. This was a huge confidence boost for us both and proved that each event he was improving!

Up next was the Belvoir Hunt Pony club one day event at Buckminster Park. I entered Charlie into the 80cm which he flew round double clear finishing on his dressage score to place 4th in his section.

Best practice worm control has received a lot of coverage in recent Figure 2. years with the availability of a saliva test for tapeworm diagnosis and Infrequent routine treatment, no testing more recently a blood test for small redworm (including encysted larval phases) which complement routine faecal egg count testing. In addition, an expert panel of veterinarians and parasitologists prepared guidelines for UK vets in 2019 on worm control, which highlighted the importance of testing before resorting to the use of dewormers. This practice, often termed ‘diagnostic-led worm control’, leads owners to only administer dewormers when infections are diagnosed, and treatment is really needed. Gone are the days of routinely administering dewormers to every horse and hoping for the best. That strategy is out-dated as it has caused widespread drug resistance in worms - meaning that worms are able to survive the killing effects of dewormers and remain in place after treatment.

We are often told these facts, but what do they really mean? This article compares the effects of diagnostic-led worm control and routine treatment programmes. Whilst routine treatment programmes provide worms with regular exposure to deworming drugs, some yards may limit the use of dewormers by simply using them less frequently, so the effect of this practice is also included.

The following illustrations (Figures 1, 2 and 3) demonstrate the effect of different worm control practices on grazing as well as on the horses in the herd. The red horse in each figure represents a horse with a worm burden in need of deworming. Figure 3. Figure 1. Diagnostic-led worm control Frequent routine treatment, no testing

A simplified version of a generic worm life cycle can be seen Figure 5. Diagnostic-led worm control in Figure 4, where the effect of dung removal on worm life cycles is illustrated. By removing dung, there is a significant reduction in eggs contaminating the grazing therefore limiting the number of infective larvae accessible for the horse to ingest.
