After thousands of test kilometers including the recent test day at Le Mans, the new Audi R18 TDI is ready for its first race. At the 1000-kilometer race at Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium) on May 7, Audi Sport Team Joest will perform its “dress rehearsal” for the Le Mans 24 Hours. The racing debut of a new race car is always a very special event and Audi Sport has good experiences in this regard. Since 2000 every new sports prototype of the brand with the four rings has won its first race. In 2000, 2006 and 2009 Sebring in Florida (USA) was the venue of the respective debut victories of the R8, R10 TDI and R15 TDI models. The updated R15 TDI, internally designated as “R15 plus,” won its maiden race as well, at Le Castellet (France). Now Spa-Francorchamps is the track to see the debut of the latest LMP1 sports car made by Audi which turns the company’s ultra-lightweight technology into a visual experience and which is equipped with a new type of ultra-compact V6 TDI engine.

  • Porsche 919 Hybrid English.Indd
Porsche 919 Hybrid Return to top-level sport Porsche is making its comeback to the top-level motorsport arena: with the new 919 Hybrid the sports car brand is sending a platform for pioneering technology to the top category of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) with the undisputed seasonal highlight of the 24-hour Le Mans race. Porsche's reputation precedes it at this venue: with 16 overall victories under its belt, the brand holds the record for this, the most famous endurance race in the world. In 2014 Porsche is returning to the top-level class endurance race after a 16-year absence - namely Le Mans Prototypes (LMP1). Matthias Müller, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG explains: "The new and revolutionary efficiency regulations for this class were what prompted us to take this step. In 2014 it is not going to be the fastest contender who is going to win the sports car world championship and Le Mans, but the car that gets furthest with the defined amount of energy. And it is precisely this challenge that the automotive industry has to face. The 919 Hybrid is like a high speed research laboratory and the most complex racing car Porsche has ever built." The new WEC regulations for the LMP1 racing car gives engineers an unusual amount of leeway and demands pioneering technology, such as hybridisation, downsizing engines and consistent lightweight construction. This is all particularly relevant for the development of future generations of factory-spec sports cars. Maximum sporting performance and highest efficiency are at the heart of "Porsche Intelligent Performance".

WATKINS GLEN, 2016 RISI FLIES SOLO AGAINST BIG TEAMS FIGHTING THE ONESIE vs TWOSIE BATTLE AROUND THE WHEEL witH Cooper MacNeil Few things on a car have changed more than the once humble steering wheel introduced by Alexander Winton nearly 120 years ago. The wheel replaced a tiller found on early vehicles. It performed a single vital function—it steered the car. Along the way, a horn button or ring appeared. Clockwise from top: Compare that to the $30,000 wheel on Cooper MacNeil’s WeatherTech Porsche 911 GT3 R. Race officials, citing hazardous conditions due to torrential rains that fell at Road Atlanta just past the four-hour mark, called the race at eight hours, 44 minutes running. Peugeot’s two diesel-powered factory prototype coupes finished 1-2 with the pole-sitting 908 HDi of Pedro Lamy and Nic Minassian in second. The first of Audi Sport Team Joest’s Audi R15 TDIs placed third, the car driven by Allan McNish and Dindo Capello. McNish and Capello dominated the race before the rains fell. Dyson Racing took its first Petit Le Mans victory with a victory in LMP2 for Marino Franchitti, Butch Leitzinger and Ben Devlin. Their Mazda-powered Lola B09/86 coupe had problems with gear selection early, but the Acura ARX-01b of Lowe’s Fernandez Racing’s Adrian Fernandez and Luis Diaz experienced steering issues throughout.

  • Record in Le Mans
newsroom Motorsports Feb 3, 2017 Record in Le Mans: Porsche has been awarded The Jury Special Grand Prize at this year’s Festival Automobile International has been attributed to Porsche for its record of 18 overall victories in Le Mans. To celebrate this award, six Le Mans winning drivers were gathered together. The awards ceremony of the 32th Festival International Automobile was a very special moment for Porsche. The brand won the "Jury Special Grand Prize" delivered by a jury composed of experts in design, art, culture, motorsport and media for its success story in Le Mans. Since the first ever overall victory in 1970, Porsche has won the twice-around-the-clock race 18 times! Felix Bräutigam, Porsche AG director region Europe, received the "Grand Prize" surrounded by six drivers who have succeeded in Le Mans with Porsche: Hans Herrmann (1970), Hans-Joachim Stuck (1986/1987), Gijs van Lennep (1971/1976), Yannick Dalmas (1994), Stéphane Ortelli (1998) and Romain Dumas (2016). Standing in front of the passionate audience of 600 leading peronnalities in the French automotive industry, Felix Bräutigam claimed: "Turbo technology, aerodynamic improvements, dual-clutch transmissions, and now hybrid systems… innovation has always been the key to our many successes in Le Mans.
