ALMS - American LeMans Series – writeup partially excerpted, photos from Jill Beck emails. LEXINGTON, Ohio – August 8 – Setting an record for five GT2 class wins in a row, the #45 Flying Lizard Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 RSR driven by Joerg Bergmeister (Germany) and (USA) expanded their championship lead to 37 points with a dramatic class win at the Acura Sports Car Challenge at Mid- Ohio Sports Car Course. And, to add icing on the cake for all Porsche enthusiasts, the new Muscle Milk Team Cytosport Porsche RS Spyder, with (Germany) and Greg Pickett (USA) at the helm, scored a surprise second-place finish in the LMP2 class, narrowly missing a class win. However, in a new challenge to Porsche dominance in GT2, the new Rahal Letterman Racing BMW M3 made a splash at August 16 th by finishing 1-2 in its class, BMW’s first victory in the American Le Mans Series since Petit Le Mans in 2001. GRAND-AM Rolex Series – articles excerpted from Jill Beck email. With the 911 GT3 Cup of Farnbacher Loles Racing, Dirk Werner (Germany) and Leh Keen (USA) further extended their lead in the American Grand-Am Series. At the ninth round of the season at Watkins Glen, the pair secured second place in the GT class – just 0.774 seconds off claiming their fifth win of the season. With this result, they continue on a solid title course. In the Daytona Prototype class, David Donohue (USA) and Darren Law (USA) claimed sixth place with ’s Porsche Riley. Their teammates Joao Barbosa (Portugal) and JC France (USA) secured eighth which also earned them crucial championship points. The Porsche Riley fielded by Penske Racing, (Germany) and (France) were well on their way to a podium result but finished 13 th due to a blown tire. As a side note, Farnbacher Loles is supporting Racing4Research which raises money to benefit NF (neurofibrosis) medical research through corporate sponsorship, individual donations, and fund- raising by children with NF. NF is a set of genetic disorders that affects one in every 3,000 births and causes tumors to grow anywhere throughout the body. Please go to racing4research.org to learn more about supporting this organization. Driver’s Education (DE) – the next DE is scheduled at Roebling for October 17, 18. Sign up now at clubregistration.net for the FL Citrus fall classic DE at Roebling Road Raceway. This user friendly track is located just off I95 near Savannah where you can enjoy its many fine restaurants and activities. For a look at the track, go to Roeblingroad.com or for more info contact Jeff Phillips @ [email protected]. Club Member Racing From Sid Collins - Jerry Ruffino racing his 82 Porsche 911SC had great results and a good time at Daytona 8/8-9/09. He’s a graduate of our DE program and has taken up the racing challenge approx. 2 1/2 years ago. Troysport has built & supported the car along with mentoring Jerry.. Tom Johnson and Sid Collins teamed up to drive the SCCA regional weekend at Daytona Troysport's trusty 72 911T was once again up to the challenge as they both ran in separate groups and classes and had a successful weekend.... It has always been understood that racing is a dangerous sport. A fellow Porsche driver, Club member and long time Porsche owner Alan Burgess was involved in a severe accident during the Daytona weekend. He remains in the hospital in critical condition and requires all our thoughts and prayers from the Porsche Sid Collins community... The FLC/FCR PCA Club Race and DE will be held on October 9 – 11 at the world famous Daytona International Speedway. The event will be spectacular this year. Porsche of Melbourne is the Title Sponsor and will provide 2 new Panameras – one for use as the Pace Car, and another for demonstration rides on the autocross course. In addition, we will hold an autocross during the club race. Details to follow. We need volunteers to help in several areas, including grid, timing and scoring, registration, race control traffic control, etc. Contact Genie Evers ( [email protected] ) or Bert Del Villano ([email protected] ) to volunteer. Only experienced DE drivers may register for the Daytona DE. If you think you are qualified, contact Richard Hook ([email protected] ). Autocross On September 26, FLC and Space Coast Regions will face off in the third annual autocross challenge. As the host, FLC has dominated the series, both in the number of drivers and in class wins. SCR has improved every year and has threatened to win this year. The Challenge will be held at the Lake County Training Facility in Tavares. Registration is $25 and includes lunch. Please preregister at www.clubregistration.com . ZOTZ GARAGE TEL: 407.678.6789 WWW.ZOTZGARAGE.COM VOLUME 35 NUMBER 9 PAGE 7 SEPTEMBER 2009 Indy IRL Experience – by John Hursh Growing up in the Midwest, the Indy 500 was a given. It was just a part of my culture like Daytona is to a central Floridian. My first race was in 1970. I kept going for 15 years! So when I read in Sports Illustrated that you could actually drive an Indy car at the IMS (Indianapolis Motor Speedway) I thought I’ve got to do that some day. It’s funny how things work out in life…I came in contact with Jeff Sinden; owner of “The IRL Experience” and the purveyor of this motor dream just last year. As luck would have it, I had a meeting in Indy on July 17th and they had one slot left for that afternoon.

I’ve driven IRL Experience at Disney three times and now having driven Indy I give this review. The IMS is a famed track and carries a wealth of history and memories for me. I’d have to say that covering the track at a regulated average speed of 110 mph is fun and something I’ll never forget. The track is so long however, that unless one can punch up the speed, I like the IRL experience at Disney more. The Disney’s track being smaller and tighter gives you a more intense feel. At IMS the long sweeping turns need more speed for the same feeling. However, it was great driving the track on my own; scenes and past Indy 500 memories played over in my mind as I was driving. They have a two-seater that travels the course at about an average speed of 180 mph…maybe next time.

A Post Script re John – he will be joining the Historic Sports Car Racing HSR) team as its Chaplain. Part of HSR’s announcement reads “John will be coming along for the ride to encourage members, provide spiritual direction and offer an integral component of a finely-tuned racing team”.

John has been an executive in the world of insurance and investments and is currently on staff with the Campus Crusade for Christ. “He has most recently returned to the U.S. after being a loaned executive to help start a humanitarian aid organization in Geneva, Switzerland. Currently, John is developing several strategies and projects for the president of Campus Crusade. John enjoys racing and learning to drive his Porsche better by participating in autocross and looks forward to DE events sponsored by the Florida Citrus region PCA club. When not on the track, the golf course or wherever his children are is where you’ll find him. He enjoys a good movie or book, and conversation with friends”.

Congratulations on the appointment John. We’re proud to have you as a member of the FL Citrus PCA.
