completely devoid of scout activity. In early January, the Boardriders fundraising BBQ is on and we will need quite a bit of parental support (more details in the newsletter!) However, much more exciting is the fact that Jamboree will be held in early January. We have a large group of Scouts, some Venturers and a number of leaders attending the Jamboree in Maryborough. (I must say I would have preferred that they didn’t start their journey from Nerang at 6:00am on Jan 1st!) I am sure they will have a great time and we will have stories about their adventures for the first newsletter next year.

Burleigh Heads For White Wolf Pack, it’s a sad time as Raksha, Kaa and Yabbie move on to Wednesday scouts. Nathan and I have thoroughly enjoyed our time with them over the last few years and I am sure the other families have 32 Stephens Street too. Taz will be taking over next year and I am sure with the parental Burleigh Heads. support the pack has enjoyed so far, Taz will manage admirably. If you’d like to step up and become more involved in the running of the pack, let PO Box 69 Burleigh Heads Q 4220 Taz know. I am sure he will appreciate all the assistance we can provide. www.bhscouts.com.au Finally thanks to everyone for their efforts during the year. Thanks to the [email protected] leaders for giving their time and dedication to make scouting so much fun and rewarding for the youth members. Thanks to the parents who Phone 07 55 350 744 helped each night, cooked on camps, attending working bees, helped Mobile 0416 257 093

on BBQs, etc. Thanks to our Group Leader, Assistance Group Leader and my fellow committee members for keeping things running. And finally, thanks to my beautiful wife Vicki for letting me take on yet another activity!

Have a wonderful and safe Christmas and New Year. I hope to see many of you at the Burleigh Boardriders fundraiser BBQ in January and everyone else at the start of Term 1 2013!

Regards Jeff Butterworth (Numbat)

Burleigh Boardriders BBQ Fundraiser th th On the weekend of January 5 /6 , the Burleigh Boardriders are having their annual Single Fin competition. Last year the scouts were invited to cook sausages, hamburgers and bacon and egg burgers for the competitors and spectators. We raised nearly $4000! We did such a good job that we have been invited back to do it again this year. One

small problem though - Jamboree is on at the same time so a lot of the leaders who ran it last year are not available this year. That means it’s up to the parents to step up and make sure we run a successful BBQ fundraiser. The BBQ itself runs from 8:00am to 2:00pm on Saturday and Sunday. The plan is to have five shifts for which you can volunteer.

 Shopping and initial food prep  Saturday Breakfast ( 7:30am- 11:00am)  Saturday Lunch (11:00am -2:30pm)  Sunday Breakfast ( 7:30am- 11:00am)  Sunday Lunch (11:00am -2:30pm)

Ideally, we need eight people in each Saturday and Sunday period to cook, prep burgers, take money and serve food. There are already some people who have volunteered but we definitely need more. Please, if you can help, let me know ASAP (contact details at end of newsletter) and indicate which shift you can help with. (If you could do two shifts that would be even better!) Quite often when I ask people directly they indicate that they can help but with scout nights finished for the year,

that’s a bit hard to do! If you have read this, and you know you can help – contact me!

As an added bonus, if you volunteer for a shift, you will go in the draw to win your Term 1 fees for free!

Swimming Carnival

At the start of Term 1 for 2013 we will be holding a group swimming

carnival at Marymount School. This will be Saturday 2nd Feb at 5:30pm. Each section will hold one or two events for everyone to participate in. It should be a lot of fun and a great way to start the new scouting year! Hopefully we can get as many people to attend as possible!

Christmas Carols Fundraiser

We were invited by Rotary Burleigh to hold a sausage sizzle at the Burleigh Community Christmas Carols held at the Burleigh Sports Club on Christine Ave. This gave us a chance to not only raise some money but also to raise our profile in the local community.

It was a very long day but we sold over $2000 worth of sausages! We had some good support from parents and it was nice to meet some new people. I was extremely impressed with the scouts Alan, Bella, Jonnie and Craig who went on front on the stall and did a fantastic job serving sausages. They were a credit to Burleigh Heads Scouts.

Thanks to the following people who helped with preparations and on the

stall. Ready to sell! Notice the new banner on the trailer!  Anthony, Janelle, Adam, Carly and Chloe Watt  Roland Franz

 Laikyn MacDonald  Dean Taylor  Steve Griffin  David and Mark McGovern  Regina, Mel, Alan and Ryan Kidd  Troy Lister  Guy Porter  Bella and Rose Way  Jonnie and Lia Juriansz  Jay Davison  Craig and Tania Hamenko We accept all sorts of help!  Luke Butterworth

Weeding Thanks to Paliasi Hanlon and family for coming in and doing some weeding during the term. Every little bit counts!

Lost Property An important trait for scouts to develop is responsibility for their gear. But it’s not always easy, especially when having to pack up from a camp quickly. Things do get misplaced. Please make sure all belongings are clearly labelled so they can go back to their owner as quickly as possible!

Lost items are kept at the den in lost property until the end of term, when it is donated to charity. If you have lost something, check the lost property as soon as you can!

Joeys The Burleigh Heads Joeys started the term with a sleepover with the Nerang Joeys at at Victoria Point. The Joeys enjoyed the pond dipping activity, the crafts, games, campfire and daytime and night time hikes.

We had a visit from a Beaver leader (UK Joeys are ) from the 1st New Romney Scout Group in the Kent area of England. Her Scout name was Keeo and she attended several Joey’s nights and showed us how Joeys/Beavers are part of a worldwide organization practiced in similar

ways in many countries. Joeys at Eprapah Other special guests this term were Wildcare and Bats Queensland. Wildcare presenters Eleanor Hanger, Natalie Rasmussen and her three children, Jasmine, Lily and Jack ages 6 to 11, spoke to the Joeys about native wildlife. They accepted from the Joeys five possum dreys that the Joeys made the week before to house orphaned possums.

Bats Queensland presenters Ali Sammel and Gavin Miles dispelled myths about bats with their educational program about ’s only flying mammal. They introduced us to two five-week old baby bats – Maurice and Sunshine – they were nursing.

The Joeys finished the term off with a Join in Jamboree badge night Learning about the environment where they learned about the Jamboree experience and participated in games and activities with a Mary Poppins theme. Author P.L. Travers was born in Maryborough, the site of the 2013 Australian Jamboree that many Burleigh Heads Scouts and leaders, a Venturer and adult support member will be attending in January.

Tuesday 7 February 5.15-6.15pm will be the Joeys’ first night back in 2013.

Happy holidays Regina ‘Echidna’ Kidd and Simon ‘Falcon’ McMahon

Lunch at Eprapah Echidna, Falcon & Joey Scouts I would like to say a huge thank you for welcoming me into your Thursday Joey Scout meetings during my stay on the Gold Coast. I had an absolutely funtastic time and it was good to share ideas. I truly did feel part of your Scouting family, everyone was so kind and happy to explain things and help me through the meetings.

I am a Beaver Leader from the UK and work with Beavers - children aged 6 -8 years in the 1st New Romney Scout Group. We are situated on the south coast of England in Kent, near to Canterbury and Dover, our group celebrated its 100th birthday in 2010. The Beaver Colony is much younger Joeys with Keo from UK Beavers though – we celebrated our 30th birthday in October 2012. My Beaver Leader name is Keeo and all the Leaders in our group take their names from the Canadian story – Friends of the Forest. Other names include Bubbles, Hawkeye, Rusty and Tic-Tac.

It was good to see how your mob operates, there are many similarities and some differences between a Joey mob and a Beaver colony. As part of the worldwide scouting family we share the same principles and values of Scouting and all of us wear the World membership badge. Beavers in the UK wear a turquoise sweatshirt and navy shorts/trousers – all groups have their own choice of neckie, 1st New Romney is red. The Building possum dreys. Burleigh Heads Scout Group

Joey programme seems very similar to the Beaver programme, the biggest difference seems to be the amount of space you have and with our differing climates there are a lot more outdoor activities in Australia! Good old British weather! I was really envious of your Den, the barbeque site and the Campfire Circle. Our HQ is probably a quarter of the size of your site!!

Meetings are very similar, with opening and closing ceremonies and lots of activity in between!! We were able to share songs and I learnt a lot about Australian animals – I did not realise there were so many marsupials. As part of the programme I was delighted to run an English Joeys helping wildlife carers style Beaver meeting. In fact 2 of the Joeys were former beavers in the UK so they came dressed in their Beaver uniforms, we watched a video about beaver animals, learnt some facts and each Joey scout made a model beaver to take home.

I was really proud to be presented with group badges and a Queensland scarf at my last meeting, it was a great privilege to receive them. I have also taken an Echidna home as a memento from Currumbin – a Christmas tree decoration complete with Santa hat, which now has pride of place on our Christmas tree. It truly is a lovely reminder

of my time spent with the Burleigh Joey mob. A baby flying fox I am now living in Atlanta, Georgia and have been to a local scout group for the first time this week – will let you know how things go when I next visit Gold Coast. Meanwhile do look up New Romney Scout Group – www.1stnewromneyscouts.org.uk – if you are in the UK please do come along to a meeting – you will be very welcome.

Tuesday Cubs – White Wolf Pack The White Wolf Pack have been very busy this term with camps and activities. The Gold Coast Region Camp was held at Andrew Drynan Park, Rathdowney. It was a little steep in places but a great area for the . The parent helpers were put through their paces on arrival putting the dome tents up in the scorching heat. They were all up for the challenge with some assistance from the Scouts???? The Cubs were split

up into different teams, which made it a little difficult to catch up with Jason takes command on his hike! them all. The Cubs all dressed up and looked a treat for the disco. We had knights/maidens/jesters who all danced the night away at the disco. The train running through the mountains at night was amazing. All the Cubs had a great time swimming in the creek, it was a great spot. Cubs also embraced the opportunity to do archery and abseiling.

We are saying Good-bye and Good Luck to the Cubs moving up to Scouts next year. Darcy, Mia, Sofie, Jason, Richard, Jake and Olivia who have all achieved their Grey Wolf Awards.

Activities have been aplenty this term. Swimming, gardening, A coven of vampires at Halloween! Halloween, camp cooking, rock climbing and last of all, Grey Wolf Walks. It was great to see everyone dressing up for Halloween and the Cubs and Leaders had a ball.

On closing we would like to take the opportunity to thank the Cubs and their parents for including us in their Scouting Adventures. It has been a privilege being Cub Scout Leaders of the White Wolf Pack. We wish you well in the future and look forward to seeing more Cubs linking to Scouts in the coming years.

White Wolf Pack Farewells When we return from the Christmas school holidays, there will be some changes in the White Wolf Pack. Sallie (Raksha), Troy (Yabbie) and I (Kaa) will no longer be heading up the Team, as we will be following our kids and heading to Scouts. Sallie and I recently undertook the training to become Scout Leaders and Troy is in the process of training, and we will be joining the team on Wednesday night Scouts. I would like to take the opportunity to thank each and every Cub that has attended Cubs at the White Wolf Pack, as I have enjoyed every second of it. From rainy camps and evacuations in Stanthorpe, billy cart crashes, sleeping with the sharks, to meeting bomb detection dogs and learning how to fold my T-Shirts like Sheldon Cooper, there have been so many fun activities that we have been involved in. When we started the White Wolf Pack, we had some Joeys that we invested in the first few weeks of the new Pack, and it is with great pleasure and pride, that these cubs are now our senior sixers, and heading off to scouts...some even to continue with us on Wednesday nights, which is a good sign!! Our goal throughout our time in Cubs has been to adhere to B.P’s Scout method, recognising cub scouts for achievement, with badges, and to reward good turns and behaviour, whilst all the time allowing the cub scouts to interact with others in a fun, learning environment, sometimes attempting things that they may otherwise never have attempted if it was not for cubs. We have taken kids camping that have never been in a tent before, convinced kids to abseil off walls, overcoming their fear of heights, as well as many other activities that have always (we hope) been fun and exciting, for them as well as us. We have had over a dozen Cub Scouts achieve their Grey Wolf Award, the highest award available to Cub Scouts, and an award that they must complete the tasks on their own, which is a stepping stone to Scouts. Thank you also to the parents of all of our Cub Scouts over the past 4 years, you have always been supportive and encouraging of everything that we have done. We have not only bonded with the kids, but have forged strong on- going friendships with parents. We hope that the White Wolf Pack will continue to be a strong Pack going forward, with Alan ‘Taz’ Goodwin agreeing to take the reins. He will need all of your support over the next few months as he learns what it takes to be a Cub . We hope that more parents join him in a Leadership role, as I can guarantee you that, although it is by no means easy, it is one of the most rewarding things that you could do as a parent. Sallie, Troy and I are looking forward to the challenges that becoming Scout Leaders will bring, having already taken the scouts on a weekend camp to B.P Park in Samford, and preparing a combined night camp with Thursday Scouts, which I’m sure will be a lot of fun. I guess I can sum up my time in cubs with a fitting quote from the founder of Scouting, Robert Baden-Powell -“The Scoutmaster teaches scouts to play the game by doing so himself” and I have certainly enjoyed my time ‘playing the game’ with the Cub Scouts. Thanks, Jay Davison (Kaa) and forever more known as Galah

To the White Wolf Pack, It has been a little over 3 years since I first joined the White Wolf Pack from Joeys. Cub's to me is where the foundations of Scouting as a Leader and for many of our Cubs are established.

"Cubs make the great Scouts" !!, that's my opinion and is proven by the number of "Grey Wolf" badges awarded to White Wolf and the ability of the Cubs to quickly adapt to Scouting and the Patrol system. Cub Scouts have a spirit of adventure and confidence that makes a Leaders job very enjoyable.

Personally I have enjoyed working with the best Leaders in Kaa and Raksha (I remember many laughs and smiles), Kaa's jokes where champagne and Raksha's comforting support the strawberry's.

The Cuboree this year stands out as a highlight, our Cubs were great and a memory I will have forever.

I'm not going far (Wednesday Scouts) and will always be close by to watch the White Wolf Pack grow and develop. TAZ is cooool (best Vampire outfit I've ever seen !!), the parents are great and get what it takes to make it fun.

Remember Cub's Rock !!! see you all in 2013.

Yours in Scouting, Yabbie. Burleigh Heads Scout Group

Wednesday Scouts Term 4 has been a busy term for the Wednesday Troop. Following on from the Leadership course that some of our PL's attended last term, Tim took his patrol on an overnight camp to Springbrook, and although the howling wind and driving rain threatened to blow them off the mountain, Tim managed to keep his Patrol entertained, with a visit to the Observatory, and a heap of badge work. Tim became the first of our scouts to achieve his Leadership course badge, well done.

The troop travelled to B.P. Park in Samford for a two night Youth Activity Camping at Springbrook Camp. After arriving late on Friday night, the scouts set up camp and headed to bed, before talking to each other for most of the night. The scouts partook in activities such as camp cooking, obstacle course, a visit to the Scout Heritage Museum, swimming and canoeing, although no one stayed in the canoes too long, including Yabbie and Galah, with the scouts making sure the leaders got 'just a little damp' in the dam..

After dinner, we were preparing for a campfire when we were told by the organisers to evacuate camp due to an imminent hail storm, and to

get together our sleeping gear and head to one of the onsite training BP Park – ready for action! buildings, which we did within about 10 minutes. The Troop spent the night camped on the floor of the training centre, with Joeys, Cubs and Scouts from other groups. Although we did get the huge storm front come through a few hours later, we were fortunate that it didn't hail. In the morning, following a full breakfast and a Scouts Own with all the other scouts, and due to more storms on the way, it was decided to abandon the camp. As we packed up, the torrential rain and lightning show began again, and we rushed to break camp, which the scouts achieved in around half an hour, which was quite an achievement. Once packed up, we had a half hour wait before heading off, as the Canoeing at BP Park sun came out and dried us off. Although it was disappointing that we didn't get to do all the activities, it was a great learning experience for all the scouts (and leaders) on the camp. Upon early arrival at the den, the scouts all helped get the gear away, including laying out the tents to dry in the Gold Coast Sun!! Thanks must go to the parents that not only helped with the transport, but also helped out with the pack up at the den.

Our PL's and APL's had a busy Saturday travelling around the Gold Coast buying bits and pieces for their Patrol Boxes. We were fortunate that the boxes themselves were purchased by the Group,(Thank-you) and some It rained just a little bit! of your section funds were used to fill them with all sorts of odds and ends to be used by the Patrols on camp. Each Patrol having their own Patrol Box makes it much easier to prepare for camp, as they have almost everything they need ready to go.

The Patrol Boxes got a workout on our combined night Survival Scout Camp with Thursday Scouts which was held at Karingal Scout camp at Mt. Cotton. The camp was a huge success, and now the scouts know how to light fires without matches, find water in the bush and build a

shelter. Some of the scouts even learnt how to wrangle a wild goanna Shopping for patrol boxes from a tent!! Each Patrol was responsible for their own camp set-up, food prep and cooking, and I'm glad to say we didn't have a single case of food poisoning. (In actual fact, I was extremely proud of the way all

Burleigh Heads Scout Group

the P.L. and A.P.L's took care of their Patrols) The scouts also cooled off in the dam and spent Sunday morning running around willy-nilly in mortal combat on the Laser Skirmish arena. Overall this was a great camp, and a great opportunity to work together and get to know each other. I look forward to both Troops running combined activities in the future.

With just a few weeks to go, Thursday troop will be finishing the year with an ice skating break-up night in Bundall, and for most of the troop that will be it for the year. But for Karly, Laikyn, Tim, Stephen, Tom and Galah,

it means it will be just a few weeks to Jamboree, which is the biggest Preparing dinner event in our Scouting Careers. They have already attended a meet and greet camp, organised by our Jamboree Troop Leader, Wombat, from Thursday Scouts. I'm sure you will hear all about the Jamboree early next year.

Our Scouting founder, Sir Robert Baden-Powell once said, “A week of camp life is worth six months of theoretical teaching in the meeting room.” and I believe that is what we achieved this term.

Thanks for a great year, and we all look forward to a bigger and better No one can see me! year next year on Wednesday nights. Merry Christmas, and enjoy the break.

Galah, on behalf of the Wednesday Leader Team.

Venturers With such a busy time during Term 3 with the construction of the Venturer Room this Term has appeared quite tame!

The crew has been slowly expanding with quite a few new faces Learning survival techniques showing up for introductions before finalising our term. Our numbers have swelled to over 25 including linking members and walk ins! We do

hope that we see you all in 2013 for our busiest year yet and that we get our membership numbers over 30 with further membership drives!

We had an awesome breakup party at Robina AMF with round of bowling and laser skirmish. The leaders were given a thrashing from the Venturers with the exception of our amazing Sarah (trainee Assistant leader) who gave a brilliant show on behalf of our leaders (helps that she is a champion bowlers ;-)

We have a number of Venturers heading up to Jamboree 2013 and Ryan is heading to Riverton in New Zealand for Venture South 2013 …. have an awesome time guys and we look forward to the photo's and stories to follow!

To commence our Term One 3013 we will be holding a 3 day camp on the Australia Day long weekend to motivate everyone for the busy year we have ahead. We understand how hard it is to juggle school, work, family and scouting responsibilities and love having whatever time we can with the great team that make up our unit and want to help them find a balance allow for family, study and play.

Activities we have planned for Term One include Operation Archer, abseiling days, water activity days, Feral camp (this ones for the Burleigh Heads Scout Group

leaders), re-election of Unit Council committee, Linking ceremonies, RoVenture, Leadership training and the list goes on...

The Term One calendar will be available mid January on the Burleigh Scout Group website and should anyone require further information please contact us! The Venturer unit is not only growing but so are our leaders. We welcome John and Kim Verbeek (Leader and Assistant Leaders) and Sarah Hartley (Assistant Leader) who will all be doing their training this year and are on board to help our Venturers with their training, badge work and to provide any support that the

unit may need over the coming years! Learning to lighting fires Thursday Scouts Hello Parents and Scouts

This term was very exciting and very busy, we are full on in preparation for Jamboree. We had a Jamboree troop camp at Camp Kallaroo, we appreciate group not charging us for the night. We gave our new friends from Lowood and Withcott a good look at what Burleigh has to offer. I was really impressed how the scouts mingled as if they were old friends. It is a shame the scouts from Moura and Ravenshoe were too far away to attend.

We have had a lot of hikes. Luke Butterworth completed his 30klm hike and fulfilled the requirements to earn his Scout Medallion. Mason Marshall did something different and completed a 60klm cycle journey. Morgan Marshall is hiking 15klm this weekend. Many thanks to those scouts who hiked and cycled with them, they get nothing out of it apart from the enjoyment of participating. Owen Griffin and Zac Cripps completed their leadership activities and Alan Kidd will be Building hobo huts doing his this weekend.

Last weekend we had a joint camp with Wednesday night at Karingal. The theme was survival; they learnt how to secure a water source, light fires using different methods, how to build a hobo hut, and navigation skills. The scouts managed to put their tents up in the dark, build a kitchen fly, prepared their own meals and cleaned up after themselves. It was very rewarding for us leaders to watch from a distance their interactions and achievements.

I would like to thank the efforts of Rosella, Magpie, Galah, Quoll and Yabbie they made the camp very enjoyable with lots of laughs. I m glad they still allow me to cook my favourite meal roast lamb.

As the end of year approaches I would like to thank Vicki Butterworth who has been an absolute asset to Thursday night. Vicki keeps the finances up to date and I have become reliant on her council. I look forward to the new year.
