On November 14, Hip-O Records/Universal Music Enterprises will release Rhythms Del Mundo, an exciting collaborative album, which fuses the hot Afro-Cuban sounds of The Buena Vista Social Club with tracks from today’s biggest artists such as U2, Coldplay, Sting, Jack Johnson and Maroon 5 as well as some of the buzziest bands, including The Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand, The Kaiser Chiefs and many others. It also features the amazing vocals from famed Cuban vocalists, Omara Portuonda, and the last ever recording of the much beloved Ibrahim Ferrer. The album is in aid of Artists Project Earth (APE), which lends support for natural disaster relief and climate change awareness. Universal Music Enterprises will donate a portion of its proceeds from sales of the album in the United States to the Music Rising campaign, an instrument replacement fund for musicians of the Gulf Coast. Rhythms Del Mundo is an electrifying album that fuses music of different cultures and comes up with a melting pot of rare sounds. Arranged by Demitrio Muniz, the main recording sessions took place in Havana at Abdala Studios from April 2005 to June 2006. While the majority of the vocals remain the same, The Buena Vista Social Club took the original orchestration from each song and created something utterly unique casting their trademark mastery over each track. Their noted and exceptional musicianship seduced even the notoriously protective Arctic Monkeys into handing over their track. As a rule, the band has never licensed their music for compilation albums, but were so enamoured with the result that they were happy for it to be included on the album. As well as The Arctic Monkeys’ track “Dancing Shoes”, Rhythms Del Mundo includes reworked tracks such as “Clocks” by Coldplay, “Better Together” by Jack Johnson, “She Will be Loved” by Maroon 5, “High and Dry” by Radiohead and others. Rhythms Del Mundo also includes music by famed Cuban singers Omara Portuondo and the last vocal recording of Afro-Cuban bolero singer, Ibrahim Ferrer, who died tragically in 2005. The other Cuban musicians from The Buena Vista Social Club who perform on this album are as follows: Barbarito Torres, Amandito Valdes, Virgilio Valdes, Angel Terri Domech, Manuel ‘Guajiro’ Mirabal, Orlando Lopez ‘Cachaito’ and Demetrio Muniz. Casablanca - Ibrahim & Omara Yusuf Islam speaks to UK’s In The News about his new cd “Yusuf Islam, more commonly known as the singer Cat Stevens before his conversion to Islam in the 1970s, is to release an album of new songs for the first time in 28 years. The singer-songwriter said that he felt compelled to return to the music scene due to “one hundred and one good reasons”. His first single, Heaven (Where True Love Goes), [was] released on October 30th, followed by the release of the album, An Other Cup, on November 14th. The release coincides with the 40th anniversary of the release of his first single, I love My Dog, in November 1966. Islam retired from the music scene in 1979 as he felt it was a “negative infringement” on his spiritual life. Since then he has been concentrating on “living, starting the charitable work I wanted to do, and having a family life”. But commenting on his return to music during the past year, he said: “When I picked up the guitar again it was like a floodgate. Ideas and melodies floated in without effort. The novelty of the whole process, searching for forgotten chords, inspired me; it made it feel the simple joy of being back as an amateur - with nothing much to lose. Today there are perhaps one hundred and one good reasons why I feel right making music and singing about life in this fragile world again. Much has changed, but today I am in a unique position as a looking glass through which Muslims can see the west and the west can see Islam.     Music, Money, and the Man: A Comparative Case Study of the Political Economy of Music in Cuba and Argentina By Paul Ruffner Honors Capstone Prof. Clarence Lusane May 4, 2009 Political economy is an interpretive framework which has been applied to many different areas in a wide range of societies. Music, however, is an area which has received remarkably little attention; this is especially surprising given the fact that music from various historical periods contains political messages. An American need only be reminded of songs such as Billy Holliday’s “Strange Fruit” or the general sentiments of the punk movement of the 1970s and 80s to realize that American music is not immune to this phenomenon. Cuba and Argentina are two countries with remarkably different historical experiences and economic structures, yet both have experience with vibrant traditions of music which contains political messages, which will hereafter be referred to as political music. That being said, important differences exist with respect to both the politics and economics of the music industries in the two countries. Whereas Cuban music as a general rule makes commentaries on specific historical events and political situations, its Argentine counterpart is much more metaphorical in its lyrics, and much more rhythmically and structurally influenced by American popular music. These and other differences can largely be explained as resulting from the relations between the community of musicians and the state, more specifically state structure and ideological affiliation in both cases, with the addition of direct state control over the music industry in the Cuban case, whereas the Argentine music industry is dominated largely by multinational concerns in a liberal democratic state.

    Buena Vista Social Club Puts on Historic Show at the White House Washington, October 16 (RHC-Guardian) -- The Buena Vista Social Club has become the first Cuba- based band to play in the White House for more than 50 years. The band performed at a White House reception on Thursday to mark Hispanic Heritage Month and the 25th anniversary of the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics. “It is wonderful to have you here. I was explaining to them that when the documentary about the Buena Vista Social Club came out, I was told it was around 1998, I bought a CD,” said Barack Obama, who asked the audience to warmly welcome the group. The White House said they were the first Cuba-based musical act to perform under its roof in more than five decades. The appearance came amid better relations between the U.S. and Cuba. The Buena Vista Social Club started as a members’ only venue in the Marianao neighbourhood of the Cuban capital of Havana for musicians and performers based on the island between the 1940s and early 1960s. In its heyday, the club encouraged and continued the development of traditional Afro-Cuban musical styles such as “son,” which is the root of salsa. In the 1990s, after the club had closed, it inspired a recording made by the Cuban musician Juan de Marcos Gonzalez and American guitarist Ry Cooder with traditional Cuban musicians. After the death of some key members, Cuban singer and dancer Omara Portuondo; guitarist and vocalist Eliades Ochoa; Barbarito Torres, who plays the laud; trumpeter Manuel “Guajiro” Mirabal; and trombonist Jesus “Aguaje” Ramos began spreading Cuban music internationally as The Buena Vista Social Club.
