CARPET TECHNOLOGY *Approved by AICTE, New Delhi Affiliated to Uttar Pradesh Board of Technical Education, Lucknow About Shahjahanpur Shahjahanpur was established by Dilir Khan and Bahadur Khan, sons of Dariya Khan, a soldier in army of the Mughal emperor Jahangir. Dariya Khan was originally from Kandahar in modern-day Afghanistan. Both Dilir Khan and Bahadur Khan were dignitaries in the regime of ShahJahan. Pleased with the services of Dilir Khan, Shah Jahan gave him 17 villages with the permission to construct a fort in 1647, following the suppression of the rebellious Katheria Rajputs. On 9 August 1925, the Indian freedom fighters Ram Prasad Bismil, Ashfaqulla Khan, Chandrashekhar Azad and Rajendra Lahiri conducted a robbery of government funds near Kakori railway station. Both Bismil and Khan were born in Shahjahanpur. HANUMAT DHAAM, SHAHJAHANPUR. Geography Shahjahanpur is located at 27.88°N 79.91°E. It has an average elevation of 194 metres (600 feet). It is situated at the junction of two rivers, namely Khannaut and Garra. Demographics As per provisional data of 2011 census, Shahjahanpur urban agglomeration had a population of 346,103, out of which males were 183,087 and females were 163,016. The literacy rate was 69.81 per cent. About Powayan Sometime after 1250 AD, one branch of Gaur Rajputs established kingdoms at Chandra, Maholi and Katesar in Sitapur in present Uttar Pradesh. A daughter of Chandra House of Gaurs was married to Rao Gopal Singh, the Katehria chieftain of Nahil. Powayan Rao Gopal Singh was killed in a battle by Rohilla Pathans and his widow sought the Town aid of her Gaur kinsmen on behalf her two infant sons. Thereupon Bhupat Singh and Himmat Singh of Chandra led a force into the district to re-establish the Katehrias at Nahil. Repeated attacks and disputes with the pathans compelled Bhupat Singh to send his son, Raja Udai Singh to Nahil's aid. Raja Udai Singh defeated the pathans at Deokali and established his estate at Powayan. He established a Fortress at Powayan around 1705 AD and there after his descendants established Powayan as the largest Rajput Estate in Rohilkhand area. Legend goes that Powayan was established originally from east of Nahil or formed the Poorvaiyan chowk. Poorvaiyan over passage of time got distorted to Pawayan or Powayan. With time the estate of Nahil lost luster and Powayan flourished under the Gaur rulers. The title of ‘Raja’ is hereditary and was recognized by the colonial British in subsequent years. The estate of the Tilakdhari Rajas of Powayan had 537 villages in Parganas of Powayan, Baragaon and Khutar.(Source: Gazetteer of Shahjahanpur, 1908) The Powayan Tahsil is bounded on the south-west by Tilhar and Shajahanpur, south and east by Kheri district, north and west by Puranpur & Bisalpur tahsils of Pilibhit district. The total area of Powayan Tehsil is 378,418 acres or 591 sq. miles. The language spoken is primarily Hindi with a dialect that is a mixture of Kanaujia and Braj. As per the census of 1901 there were a total of 5408 inhabitants, of whom 3776 were Hindus, 1384 Muslims and 248, other religions. A large fair was held every year on Dusshera and a smaller gathering known as Chhariyan takes place in the month of Chait. (Source: Gazetteer of Shahjahanpur, 1908) Principal's Desk Through the running two years since its inception, Govt. Polytechnic Powayan College has steadily grown to its present status as one of the leading diploma colleges not only of Powayan but also of Uttar Pradesh But to rest on our laurels, to become complacent about our achievements, would be dangerous, as the challenges facing higher education grow increasingly stiffer; there is a need to re-define our roles and responsibilities as an educational institution so that we remain relevant in a constantly changing scenario. It is imperative that we encourage our students to fare well academically but perhaps even more importantly, to develop the capacity to think analytically as well as creatively. Above all, it is important to make them broad-minded and progressive in the best sense by helping them to understand and respect differences. And finally, at a time when the greatest barrier in the way of our nation's march towards progress is perhaps a growing intolerance of other's faiths, it is important to guide them towards being truly secular in their attitudes without losing attachment to their own faith. management, committed faculty and a bright, sensitive, socially-responsible student community, has all the resources to make it possible MANDATORY DISCLOSURE 1. • Chandra Shekahr Azad
Chandra Shekahr Azad drishtiias.com/printpdf/chandra-shekahr-azad Why in News On 23rd July, India paid tribute to the freedom fighter Chandra Shekahr Azad on his birth anniversary. Key Points Birth: Azad was born on 23rd July 1906 in the Alirajpur district of Madhya Pradesh. Early Life: Chandra Shekhar, then a 15-year-old student, joined a Non-Cooperation Movement in December 1921. As a result, he was arrested. On being presented before a magistrate, he gave his name as "Azad" (The Free), his father's name as "Swatantrata" (Independence) and his residence as "Jail". Therefore, he came to be known as Chandra Shekhar Azad. 1/2 Contribution to Freedom Movement: Hindustan Republican Association: After the suspension of the non- cooperation movement in 1922 by Gandhi, Azad joined Hindustan Republican Association (HRA). HRA was a revolutionary organization of India established in 1924 in East Bengal by Sachindra Nath Sanyal, Narendra Mohan Sen and Pratul Ganguly as an offshoot of Anushilan Samiti. Members: Bhagat Singh, Chandra Shekhar Azad, Sukhdev, Ram Prasad Bismil, Roshan Singh, Ashfaqulla Khan, Rajendra Lahiri. Kakori Conspiracy: Most of the fund collection for revolutionary activities was done through robberies of government property. In line with the same, Kakori Train Robbery near Kakori, Lucknow was done in 1925 by HRA. The plan was executed by Chandrashekhar Azad, Ram Prasad Bismil, Ashfaqulla Khan, Rajendra Lahiri, and Manmathnath Gupta. Hindustan Socialist Republican Association: HRA was later reorganised as the Hindustan Socialist Republican Army (HSRA). It was established in 1928 at Feroz Shah Kotla in New Delhi by Chandrasekhar Azad, Ashfaqulla Khan, Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar and Jogesh Chandra Chatterjee.
