  • Desire, Disease, Death, and David Cronenberg: the Operatic Anxieties of the Fly
Desire, Disease, Death, and David Cronenberg: The Operatic Anxieties of The Fly Yves Saint-Cyr 451 University of Toronto Introduction In 1996, Linda and Michael Hutcheon released their groundbreaking book, Opera: Desire, Disease, Death, a work that analyses operatic representations of tuberculosis, syphilis, cholera, and AIDS. They followed this up in 2000 with Bodily Charm, a discussion of the corporeal in opera; and, in 2004, they published Opera: The Art of Dying, in which they argue that opera has historically provided a metaphorical space for the ritualistic contemplation of mortality, whether the effect is cathartic, medita- tive, spiritual, or therapeutic. This paper is based on a Hutcheonite reading of the Fly saga, which to date is made up of seven distinct incarnations: George Langelaan published the original short story in 1957; Neumann and Clavell’s 1958 film adaptation was followed by two sequels in 1959 and 1965; David Cronenberg re-made the Neumann film in 1986, which gener- ated yet another sequel in 1989; and, most recently in 2008, Howard Shore and David Henry Hwang adapted Cronenberg’s film into an opera. If the Hutcheons are correct that opera engenders a ritualistic contemplation of mortality by sexualising disease, how does this practice influence composers and librettists’ choice of source material? Historically, opera has drawn on the anxieties of its time and, congruently, The Fly: Canadian Review of Comparative Literature / Revue Canadienne de Littérature Comparée CRCL DECEMBER 2011 DÉCEMBRE RCLC 0319–051x/11/38.4/451 © Canadian Comparative Literature Association CRCL DECEMBER 2011 DÉCEMBRE RCLC The Opera draws on distinctly 21st-century fears.

  • Chapter 24 the Cinema of David Cronenberg
Chapter 24 The Cinema of David Cronenberg Objectives: The objective of this chapter is to introduce the learners to the films and works of David Cronenberg, one of the leading Canadian filmmakers. Key words: body horror, graphic sequences, auteurism David Cronenberg (1943- ) Cronenberg’s became a significant presence in world cinema since the commercial success in the United States of his 1981 film Scanners. He is an author as well as an auteur, writing or adapting the screenplays for most of his movies.Yet, the English-speaking Canada has never been really comfortable with Cronenberg. A filmmaker of remarkable originality, Cronenberg has rarely received an appropriate consideration from scholarly opinion in English Canada. A voracious reader, his readings range from the modernists to science fiction, and he cites Vladimir Nabokov and William Burroughs, rather than any filmmakers, as his artistic influences. David Cronenberg’s movies are often described as ‘immoral.’ They are consequently criticized for being ‘sick, perverse, and sometimes downright depraved’. Often called Dave ‘Depraved’ Cronenberg and ‘The Baron of Blood’, he is one of the principal originators of what is commonly known as the body horror genre, a style of filmmaking which explores people’s fears of bodily transformation and infection. The idea of cursed intelligence occurs frequently in his films. His Videodrome (1983) is a commentary on how films and television have changed the notions of reality and fantasy. In Dead Zone (1983), based on a Stephen King novel, Christopher Walken plays a man who is able to see the end of life in anyone he touches.

SYMPHONIES OF HORROR Musical Experimentation in Howard Shore’s Work with David Cronenberg A thesis submitted to the Oberlin College & Conservatory Musical Studies Department in fulfillment of the requirements for University Honors by Vikram Shankar Spring 2017 Shankar, Symphonies of Horror 2 Table of Contents: Introduction 3 Methodology 6 Theoretical Frameworks 9 Early Experimentation: The Brood 20 Synthesized Surrealism: Videodrome 30 Breaking Through to the Mainstream: The Fly 40 Scoring the Unfilmable: Naked Lunch 60 Conclusion 77 Works Cited 81 Nosferatu, A Symphony of Horror: original score 84 Acknowledgments 86 Shankar, Symphonies of Horror 3 INTRODUCTION With a career spanning almost forty years, Canadian composer Howard Shore has become one of the most respected and sought after film composers working in the industry today. Much of his work, in particular his scores for the Lord of the Rings films, have received much academic attention; his longstanding working relationship with Canadian horror filmmaker David Cronenberg, however, has not yet benefited from such academic inquiry. Using the films The Brood, Videodrome, The Fly, and Naked Lunch as case studies, this thesis examines the way that Shore uses the arena of Cronenberg’s films as a laboratory for personal musical experimentation. Examples include Shore’s use of electronic synthesizer sounds alongside a string orchestra for Videodrome, implementations of canonic techniques and against-the-grain writing for The Fly, and the incorporation of free-jazz aesthetics in Naked Lunch. Using as sources Howard Shore’s words and what academic inquiry exists in this field, but more often utilizing my own analysis and observations of the music and films, I argue that Shore’s scores incorporate such musical experimentation to work in tandem with Cronenberg’s own experimental art.

THE BARTOK PARTY- NIGHT We open on a large white, pristine hall filled with people. We close in on two such people, SETH BRUNDLE and VERONICA QUAIFE. They are mid-conversation: BRUNDLE What am I working on? Uh... I'm working on something that'll change the world and human life as we know it. VERONICA Change it a lot or just a bit? You'll have to be more specific. BRUNDLE What, you want me to be specific here, in this room, with, uh... half the scientific community of North America eavesdropping? VERONICA Is there another way? BRUNDLE You could come back to my lab. Listen, I'll make you cappuccino. I have a Faema of my very own. You know what that is? It's not the Dilettante's plastic kitchen model. 10/16/2017 The Must-Read Short Stories Behind 16 Great Movies The Must-Read Short Stories Behind 16 Great Movies huffingtonpost.ca /entry/best-short-stories-movie-adaptations_us_57b5c53ce4b095b2f542c311 8/19/2016 HuffPost The sci-fi psychological thriller “Arrival” has been lighting up the internet since the trailer’s, ahem, arrival this week. The November 2016 movie of alien contact (not, as some originally may have thought, a comedy of manners surrounding a visit from distant out-of-town relatives) has already been stirring up buzz not just around the performances of its A-list stars and its eerie, geopolitically touchy posters, but around the text “Arrival” was originally based on. Believe it or not, this entire feature film was drawn from a short story, “Story of Your Life” by Ted Chiang, which won the Nebula Award for Best Novella in 2000. (That’s a pretty prestigious science fiction award.) Now, movie critics and sci-fi film fans alike are hastening to their computers to order copies of Chiang’s short story collections, uncovering a whole new fantastic reservoir of writing that they might never have previously thought to seek out. What better argument, in today’s film-rich environment, for the value of the humble short story? One day, that unassuming little flight of fantasy you leafed through in 20 minutes could be on the big screen. Need more proof? Here are 16 gripping, mind-bending, whimsical, poetic short stories that ended up as major motion pictures ― some of them may surprise you: 10/16/2017 The Must-Read Short Stories Behind 16 Great Movies “Arrival” by Ted Chiang Small Beer, Paramount Chiang's award-winning short story takes a more intimate angle on the alien invasion narrative, focusing on a scientist tasked with communicating with extraterrestrial interlopers and the philosophical and emotional questions ultimately raised by her work.
