EDITORIAL.

There is but little to say. As our country approaches the greatest moments of her history, words become strangely inadequate : and as former sons of the School go forth to give themselves for , we would render them, not sounding praise, but the deeper tribute of silent admiration and gratitude. And yet what better moment could there be for all Dunelmians and Old Dunelmians to drink of the stirrup-cup and pledge a toast to their unity ? Whatever the war has done, it has done this ; it has made us more really conscious of what we might have forgotten ; it has made us conscious that the School does not consist only of its present members, but that all who have ever been here, all who are here, and all who are to come, are joined in a noble and ancient loyalty which nothing shall destroy. And so to those who have gone from us, we send a greeting and a message of good luck, confident that they will always honour the memory of Durham, and with the sure promise that Durham will not forget them : while to those who shall come after, knowing well that each will

228 play his part with energy and a worthy courage, we hand on the responsibility of guiding our heritage to a greater and more prosperous future. Our thoughts will be with them.

NOTE. Owing to the necessity of economy in paper, the Dunelmian was not published in March, and the present issue therefore covers both the Easter and Summer Terms. Most of our space is devoted to O.D. News, and School News has been considerably curtailed.

SCHOOL NOTES.

EASTER TERM. We had a great deal of influenza and German measles during the earlier part of the term ; fortunately it cleared up at the beginning of March. There were many frozen pipes in the first few weeks, and no Rugger at all could be played owing to the prolonged frost and snow. ' Entertainments ' included the following :•—a Song Recital by Mr. Winter Coppin, a talk by Mr. J. L. Longland, on the work of the Community Service Council for Durham County, and lectures by Mr. C. E. Clayton on the Oberammergau Passion Play, by Captain O. G. Pike on The Romance of Bird Song in Story and Sound,' by Mr. K. P. Stewart on Dr. Barnardo's Homes, by Miss Noel Wight on

229 ' From the Cape to London by Car,' and by Lt.-Com. D. Dixon on ' Finland and the Baltic.' We arc once more indebted to Loughborough School of Athletics for sending us a student, Mr. R. J. Lissamer, to coach during March. The Sports were held on March 27th. Burchnall set up a new School record for the Long Jump (21 feet, If inches), and Orwin equalled the record for the 100 yards in 10§ seconds. School House won the Bland Medal. We were at school for Holy Week and Easter. The Bishop of Durham very kindly gave addresses in Chapel on the first three evenings of Holy Week. On the Thursday afternoon the Choral Society sang selections from Mendels- sohn's ' Elijah ' in Chapel. There were 70 communicants at 8.15 a.m. on Easter Day.

SUMMER TERM.

By the courtesy of the Warden and Council of the Durham Colleges, four University lecturers, Dr. G. H. Christie, Dr. J. A. Chalmers, Dr. C. W. Gibby and Miss A. Roberts have continued to teach Science at the School during the year. The School Confirmation was held in Abbey on June 5th, by the Bishop of Durham. There were 23 candidates. Boys now make their beds, clean their shoes, and wait on themselves at meals. Help has been given to local farmers on half-holidays towards the end of term, and it is hoped that a farm camp and lumber camp will take place during the holidays. The Cross Country Race of the Durham County Associa- tion of Boys' Clubs was held at the School on May 4th. The House Music Competition was adjudicated, on July 9th, by Mr. J. Hinton, Director of Music at Giggleswick. The Cup was won by Poole House, with School House and Caffinites equal second and not far behind. The high standard of the last few years was fully maintained. The health of the School has been remarkably good this term ; the Sanatorium has been almost completely empty.

230 SCHOOL SOCIETIES. The Dramatic Society gave two very successful per- formances of Walter Hackett's play, " Ambrose Applejohn's Adventure," at the end of the Christmas term. Our congratulations are due to all members of the Society, and Major le Fleming deserves the highest praise for his excellent production. The Essay Society met three times last term. Jones read a paper on " Seventeenth Century Poetry," Harris on " Civilisation," and Burchnall on " Rembrandt," We have, as usual, to thank Mr. and Mrs. Green for their kind hospitality. The Chess Club met regularly throughout last term. The Arnison Cup was won by School House. The Tristram and Debating Societies have not met this term, and the Carpentry Society has closed down temporarily as a war economy.

O.T.C. The strength this term is 80. 37 Cadets hold Certificate A—the largest number for many years. The Inspection, which was to have been carried out by the Area Commander on June 10th, was cancelled by the War Office. School House won the Senior Shooting Cup and Caffinites the Junior. 32 Cadets were enrolled as members of the L.D.V. on June 2nd, but their services have not yet been required. We have been pleased to be able to give shooting instruction on our range to other members of the City L.D.V. Company twice a week. E G A A CRICKET. THE SCHOOL REGISTER. The third edition of the School Register, which was already in the hands of the Cambridge University Press some months before the outbreak of war, was distributed to subscribers during the term. The necessity for a new edition was realised immediately after the last war and it was the wish of Canon Budworth that it should be produced as soon as possible. Owing, however, to many difficulties which are explained in the Preface, it was not until 1931 that the mass of material accumulated was reduced to order by Mr. Burbidge who had accepted the task of preparing the book for publication. As a result of nine years of patient research the names from the earliest times have been revised and biographies completed. Only those who buy and study the Register can realise how completely it records the history of the School and estimate the vastness of the task which Mr. Burbidge has brought to so successful a conclusion. He has earned the gratitude of every Dunelmian and of all who love the School.

ROLL OF HONOUR.

CAPTAIN G. G. DUNN, 9th D.L.I. CAPTAIN W. G. RICHARDS, The Green Howards, died of wounds. LIEUTENANT R. F. KAYE WEBSTER, R.A.M.C., missing. K. DAY, killed in an accident on A.R.P. duty in York.

OBITUARY. The death of Mr. A. C. Bartholomew, which was the subject of memorial notices in The Times and Daily Telegraph, will mean little to the later generations of Dunelmians, but during his stay at Durham, as an Assistant Master, as far back as 1870, his energetic personality so influenced his pupils that they feel that their debt to him should be put on record. He did much to put life into the teaching of Classics, and, as a Cambridge ' Blue,' to

242 stimulate the interest in Cricket. He set a good example himself at the game and played a famous innings of 16ft against Northumberland. Although he did not remain many years in the North, he made many friends there, as in later life, among gardeners as well as cricketers, and his death, at the age of 94, evoked many reminiscences of a popular personality. H. W. Wilson, the well-known naval historian, was a former leader writer and assistant editor of The Daily Mail. He was a Yorkshire clergyman's son, won a King's Scholarship at the School in 1880, and later (in 1885) a Leaving Exhibition and a Scholarship at Trinity College, Oxford. He took a lst Class in Classical Mods, and 2nd Class in Lit. Hum. in 1888. He wrote " Ironclads in Action " before he was 30, and thenceforward became recognised as one of our best naval historians. Thirty-one years later, after the European War, he published "Battleships in Action." He was one of the earliest members of the Navy League and honorary Editor of the Navy League Journal. He contributed to the Cambridge Modern History and his later histories included " War Guilt," a survey of the causes of the last war. He was a contributor to The Daily Mail from its founda- tion in 1896, and two years later accepted the invitation of Lord Northcliffe (then Alfred Harmsworth) to join the staff as leader writer. He wrote the main leading articles for The Daily Mail for nearly 40 years. " In a Lifetime of distinguished journalism" says The Daily Mail, " Mr. Wilson won an international reputation as an expert on naval matters and foreign affairs. His work was informed by a wide knowledge of men and events, and marked by his gift of concise and vigorous expression." He retired on pension in 1938, " one of the most revered figures in Fleet Street." Mr. Wilson was buried in Hitchin Cemetery. The service was conducted by Prebendary S. F. L. Bcrnays, O.D., rector of Finchley.
