You get a delightful combination of fun-loving, sometimes volatile, creative, artistic and always-on-the-move proudly-gay married East Bay couple known as Bruce and Gilberto! In April 1947, Gilberto was born the youngest of five children in a village near Nicaragua’s third largest city, Estelí, 150 miles north of Managua, the capital city, and about three hours from the Honduran border. He had two older brothers and two older sisters. “I always felt like I lived in a very small town,” Gilberto recalls, “since I grew up in a close-knit family and protected community where everybody knows you and watches out for you. We were always out and about, playing, swimming, dancing and singing. We were never afraid to go anywhere or do anything, because we always felt safe. I was frequently asked to perform – sometimes poetry, sometimes dancing – I loved the attention.” The Catholic Church played a major role in his childhood and youth. “Our family was very orthodox Catholic,” Gilberto says, “including Latin mass – which I loved – confession, first communion and I was an acolyte for many years. I felt fine about my relationship with God, so in the confessional, the priests would ask if I loved my mother or respected other people.

NEW BRAND, NEW DANCERS, NEW WORKS IN AMERICAN MIDWEST BALLET'S MOMENTUM OMAHA — The freshly rebranded American Midwest Ballet — formerly known as Ballet Nebraska — will open its ninth season in October with a fresh crop of works, artistic director Erika Overturff said. “Our mixed repertory program, Momentum, has been a must-see since our earliest seasons, because it showcases the exciting range of dance as an expressive art,” Overturff said. “For its first American Midwest Ballet edition, we're mixing some past favorites with works that will be new experiences for our audiences.” Headlining the selection is Overturff's Rhapsody in Blue, to the iconic music of George Gershwin. “When I choreographed it, I listened to the music many times until I knew all of the rhythms and notes by heart,” Overturff said. “The music is so expressive; within one piece it conveys so many different moods. It is flirty, jazzy, big and bold, whiny and sad, sweeping and romantic, daring and quick – lots of personality! “I see the dancers as a personification of the musical notes themselves, as if they floated out of the instruments and onto the stage for us to see.” ! Among the program’s other highlights are three guest works: Frank Chaves’ sultry, flirtatious At Last, is a duet set to lyrics sung by the incomparable Etta James.

Erika Overturff, breathless from two hours onstage, was still in costume as she ran outside to pose for commemorative photos under the Orpheum Theater marquee. The new ballet company she had founded had just completed its first mainstage production: Harrison McEldowney’s Swing, Swing, Swing! Fast-forward to April 2020. Now wrapping up its tenth season, the company – still with Overturff as its artistic director and an active performer – is now American Midwest Ballet. Its original 12-member roster has grown to 29 professional dancers from 17 states and two foreign countries, and it is now based in spacious new studios in Council Bluffs’ just-completed Hoff Family Arts & Culture Center. “It’s time to celebrate,” Overturff said, “and a great time to bring back Swing, Swing, Swing!” The ballet is a tribute to the Second World War's “Greatest Generation,” with a central love story framed by dance vignettes that draw on the era’s popular styles, Overturff said.
