  • WILTON LEWIS FELDER Phillis Wheatley Graduating Class of 1957 Musician, Saxophonist, Bassist, Composer, and Recording Artist
WILTON LEWIS FELDER Phillis Wheatley Graduating Class of 1957 Musician, Saxophonist, Bassist, Composer, and Recording Artist Wilton Lewis Felder is a native Houstonian from a family of 17 children (15 girls and 2 boys) who grew up in the historic Fifth Ward of the city. He exhibited musical talent at an early age that was nurtured through both middle and high school where he and a group of childhood friends, also musically talented, graduated from Phillis Wheatley High School in the Classes of 1956 and 1957. The entire group had opportunities, particularly in relationship to band directors/music teachers, to develop and refine their playing and performance skills even before leaving high school. Early on, Wilton developed as a tenor saxophone player; but, subsequently, from the encouragement of fellow group member and friend, Joe Sample, mastered the bass guitar as well. After a couple of years in college, the group of friends (including Felder) relocated to the West Coast in the late 1950s where they formed a pioneering and highly successful jazz fusion group that came to be known as the Jazz Crusaders at first and simply as the Crusaders at a later time. Thus, Wilton Felder was one of the founding members of the Jazz Crusaders/Crusaders who spent over thirty years, more time than any other founding member, playing as part of the group. The other founding members were Wayne Henderson, Joe Sample, Nesbert "Stix" Hooper, Hubert Laws, and Henry "La La" Wilson. Most of the them opted for solo careers after the group achieved a high level of success and recognition; however, all are now a part of music history both as Crusaders and solo artists.

Orange Soul Sheet Tipping to the Nu Music Movement Volume 1 issue 10 718-455-0092 [email protected] 818-506-1424 (West Coast office) June1-15, 2007 Kevin Harewood (Publisher) Bruce Jones (advertising sales) ===================== A Look Back to Move Forward We are in the month of June which is hailed as “Black Music Month”. This yearly occurrence has led me to reflect on the music that has been the foundation of the music menu of my life. The first artists I really got into were Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and Sly and The Family Stone. It is a well known fact that Stevie and Marvin recorded for the then independently owned Motown family of labels. Sly recorded for the major Columbia Records. However, his music and visual output still exhibited that he was a bastion of independent thought. In my college days I began an affinity for jazz by coming across Grover Washington Jrs Soul Box and Mr Magic albums. These records made me go back and find the music of Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Dexter Gordon my father had played since I was a little thing. Grover was originally on the independent CTI label owned by Creed Taylor. My excursion into reggae started with Bob Marley’s “Natty Dread” which was on Chris Blackwell’s then independent Island Records. I really got open to hip hop with “Rock Box” on the independent Profile label and “Eric B For President” by Eric B and Rakim which ended up on Island subsidiary 4 th and Broadway. My first job in the music business was at the then independent A&M records.

  • Joe Sample (February 1, 1939 – September 12, 2014)
Joe Sample (February 1, 1939 – September 12, 2014) There was no way you could mention The Crusaders, without mentioning Joe Sample. In the 70’s, and 80’s, this group was a hit after hit cranking machine. The Crusaders had a special way of mixing so many styles together to come up with masterpiece after masterpiece that you never got tired of hearing. Joseph Leslie "Joe" Sample was an American pianist, keyboard player and composer. He was one of the founding members of the Jazz Crusaders, the band which became simply The Crusaders in 1971, and remained a part of the group until its final album in 1991 (not including the 2003 reunion album Rural Renewal). Beginning in the early 1980s, he enjoyed a successful solo career and guested on many recordings by other performers and groups, including Miles Davis, George Benson, Jimmy Witherspoon, B. B. King, Eric Clapton, Steely Dan, and The Supremes. Sample incorporated jazz, gospel, blues, Latin, and classical forms into his music. The group quickly found opportunities on the West Coast, making its first recording, Freedom Sounds in 1961 and releasing up to four albums a year over much of the 1960s. The Jazz Crusaders played at first in the dominant hard bop style of the day, standing out by virtue of their unusual front-line combination of saxophone (played by Wilton Felder) and Henderson's trombone. Another distinctive quality was the funky, rhythmically appealing acoustic piano playing of Sample, who helped steer the group's sound into a fusion between jazz and soul[2] in the late 1960s.
