MCA 700 Discography by David Edwards, Mike Callahan & Patrice Eyries © 2018 by Mike Callahan MCA-700 Midline/Reissue Series: By the time the reissue series reached MCA-700, most of the ABC reissues had been accomplished in the MCA 500-600s. MCA decided that when full price albums were converted to midline prices, the albums needed a new number altogether rather than just making the administrative change. In this series, we get reissues of many MCA albums that were only one to three years old, as well as a lot of Decca reissues. Rather than pay the price for new covers and labels, most of these were just stamped with the new numbers in gold ink on the front covers, with the same jackets and labels with the old catalog numbers. Thepoemsselectedhereare representative of the wide emotional range of Hopkins' poetry. ·. I r A Jesuit priest in Victorian England, GERARD MANLEY HOPKINS ( 1844-1889) lived a life ofobscurity andfrustration. He was awed and fascinated by the splendor of "God's Grandeur" and the beauty of nature. But he struggled tragically with his own relationship with God and the inevitable impelfections within himself and all men. The soprano represents the lighter boyish, sometimes whim sical, always beautiful Hopkins. The baritone recalls the poet's darker side, the anguished priest, ill, severely depressed, bitterly ashamed of his own .frail humanity.

  • Gerry Mulligan Discography
GERRY MULLIGAN DISCOGRAPHY GERRY MULLIGAN RECORDINGS, CONCERTS AND WHEREABOUTS by Gérard Dugelay, France and Kenneth Hallqvist, Sweden January 2011 Gerry Mulligan DISCOGRAPHY - Recordings, Concerts and Whereabouts by Gérard Dugelay & Kenneth Hallqvist - page No. 1 PREFACE BY GERARD DUGELAY I fell in love when I was younger I was a young jazz fan, when I discovered the music of Gerry Mulligan through a birthday gift from my father. This album was “Gerry Mulligan & Astor Piazzolla”. But it was through “Song for Strayhorn” (Carnegie Hall concert CTI album) I fell in love with the music of Gerry Mulligan. My impressions were: “How great this man is to be able to compose so nicely!, to improvise so marvellously! and to give us such feelings!” Step by step my interest for the music increased I bought regularly his albums and I became crazy from the Concert Jazz Band LPs. Then I appreciated the pianoless Quartets with Bob Brookmeyer (The Pleyel Concerts, which are easily available in France) and with Chet Baker. Just married with Danielle, I spent some days of our honey moon at Antwerp (Belgium) and I had the chance to see the Gerry Mulligan Orchestra in concert. After the concert my wife said: “During some songs I had lost you, you were with the music of Gerry Mulligan!!!” During these 30 years of travel in the music of Jeru, I bought many bootleg albums. One was very important, because it gave me a new direction in my passion: the discographical part. This was the album “Gerry Mulligan – Vol. 2, Live in Stockholm, May 1957”.

Issue 77 JANUARY 28TH, 2019 Welcome to Copper #77! I hope you had a better view of the much-hyped lunar-eclipse than I did---the combination of clouds and sleep made it a non-event for me. Full moon or no, we're all Bozos on this bus---in the front seat is Larry Schenbeck, who brings us music to counterbalance the blah weather; Dan Schwartz brings us Burritos for lunch; Richard Murison brings us a non-Python Life of Brian; Jay Jay French chats with Giles Martin about the remastered White Album; Roy Hall tells us about an interesting day; Anne E. Johnson looks at lesser-known cuts from Steely Dan's long career; Christian James Hand deconstructs the timeless "Piano Man"; Woody Woodward is back with a piece on seminal blues guitarist Blind Blake; and I consider comfort music, and continue with a Vintage Whine look at Fairchild. Our reviewer friend Vade Forrester brings us his list of guidelines for reviewers. Industry News will return when there's something to write about other than Sears. Copper#77 wraps up with a look at the unthinkable from Charles Rodrigues, and an extraordinary Parting Shot taken in London by new contributor Rich Isaacs. Enjoy, and we’ll see you soon! Cheers, Leebs. Stay Warm TOO MUCH TCHAIKOVSKY Written by Lawrence Schenbeck It’s cold, it’s gray, it’s wet. Time for comfort food: Dvořák and German lieder and tuneful chamber music. No atonal scratching and heaving for a while! No earnest searches after our deepest, darkest emotions. What we need—musically, mind you—is something akin to a Canadian sitcom.

1 The PIANO of RICHARD TWARDZIK Solographer: Jan Evensmo Completed: Jan. 4, 2016 2 Born: Danvers, Boston, Ma., April 30, 1931 Died: Paris, France, Oct. 21, 1955 Introduction: Richard “Dick” Twardzik was one of the most exciting pianists in early modern jazz, that is the few years he lived. His music is equally fresh, original, unpredictable and moving today as it was played and recorded, mostly in jams and concerts more than half a century ago. History: Studied classical music before discovering jazz. Began playing in clubs in 1946 and soon became one of the most promising musicians in Boston. Played with Serge Chaloff and Charlie Parker, worked with Charlie Mariano (1951-52) and toured with Lionel Hampton. After recording with Chaloff and as a leader (1954) he joined Chet Baker for a European tour (1955). He was addicted to heroin and died from an overdose in a Paris hotel (ref. New Grove Dictionary of Jazz). 3 RICHARD TWARDZIK SOLOGRAPHY CHARLIE MARIANO Boston, Dec. 1951 Sonny Truitt (tb), Charlie Mariano (as), Jim Clark (ts), Richard Twardzik (p), Jack Lawlor (b), Carl Goodwin (dm). One title (postscript: earlier presented as “Aviary”, although solo notation and comments below are correct for “Mariners”) was recorded for Prestige: 302 Mariners Intro 8 bars. Acc. (as), (tb) and (ts). Solo 32 bars. (FM) From the very first bar in the intro we meet one of the most fascinating pianists in modern jazz development. His musical world is quite different from most of his contemporaries, as evident from the dark hued solo on this “Mariners”. SERGE CHALOFF QUINTET Albany, NY.

  • Nils Landgren & Joe Sample
NILS LANDGREN & JOE SAMPLE CREOLE LOVE CALL Nils Landgren Joe Sample with Ray Parker Jr., Chris Severin, Raymond Weber, Lenny Castro a.o. Special Guest: Charmaine Neville ACT 9707-2 Release Date in Germany : October 24, 2005 The man with the red trombone is always on the look out for new challenges. This is what has made Nils Landgren one of the most creative, many-sided and also most successful artists to be currently found in the European jazz scene. Since 1994 he has been under contract to the ACT Label from Munich, releasing over this period 12 albums in his own name. Seven have received the golden German Jazz Award, with two even going platinum! Meanwhile, his role as producer of Swedish singers Rigmor Gustafsson and Viktoria Tolstoy has brought him two further gold awards. With "Mr Redhorn" Nils Landgren, who "for a long time has been at the forefront of European jazz trombonists" (Spiegel), you don't only associate the frenetic celebrated concerts of his groovy Funk Unit, which has been ceaselessly on the road for the past year with the successful project FUNKY ABBA (ACT 9430-2). You also know him from his intimate duos with Esbjörn Svensson where they would rework Swedish folk songs, from his chamber concerts of religious music or from his collaborations with big bands. One first came across Nils Landgren as the sensitive interpreter of ballads on his 1999 album Ballads (ACT 9269-2) from which can be appreciated his gentle and touching voice and "hypnotic charm" (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung). Following this he released his platinum disc Sentimental Journey (ACT 9409-2) and produced the exceptionally successful album I Will Wait For You (ACT 9418-2) by Rigmor Gustafsson.
