May 15, 2018 Creators of Film and Television Music NEWSLETTER A n E n t e r t a i n m e n t I n d u s t r y O r g a n i z a t i on The President’s Corner Journey’s End from Charley Londoño My term as president of the California Copyright Conference (“CCC”) has been one of the most rewarding and fast-moving periods of my life. When I was elected as president, I spoke about (1) increasing membership; (2) increasing the visibility of the John Braheny Scholarship Fund; and (3) providing quality panels with interesting topics. Rarely is reality better than the dream. However, in this case, I believe, collectively as an organization, the CCC surpassed imagination. I wish space permitted me to list all of the accomplishments with specificity, but, I think the growth in membership, increased donations to the scholarship fund, and increased attendance at our panels, speaks volumes of the CCC’s accomplishments. Moreover, to add to the CCC’s accomplishments, the Apollo Awards, as well as the CCC’s Mentorship/Ambassador program, were both launched this year and have now become staples of the CCC’s initiatives. No one succeeds in this business without the help of others, and, I would like to thank the CCC’s officers, board, and members for a successful year. DAVID KLOTZ Music Editor David Klotz has devoted his career to the music side of the film and tv industry, primarily as a music editor, but also as a composer, songwriter and music supervisor. He has won six Emmy awards for his work on Stranger Things, Game of Thrones, and American Horror Story. He got his start music supervising Christopher Nolan’s critically acclaimed film, Memento. Soon after, he moved into music editing, working on the shows Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly, and Blade, the TV Series, to name a few. In 2005, he formed Galaxy Beat Media, his music editorial and production company, working on TV shows including Entourage, Prison Break, Glee, and the Marvel feature film, Iron Man. David co-wrote and performed the theme song to the 2001 Robert Rodriguez blockbuster, Spy Kids. He most recently produced and arranged a cover of the 1984 classic “Never Ending Story” for Stranger Things Season 3, available on the show’s soundtrack album. David’s band Dream System 8 has created music for dozens of TV shows including 9-1-1, American Horror Story, Scream Queens, and Pose. It’s left to the CD’s credits to suggest that Anita Kelsey was the vocalist. Kelsey’s wiki here confirms this by calling her the “featured vocalist on big screen productions such as Dark City…” However, for the director’s cut extended version, one of the changes made was to return Jennifer Connelly’s original vocals to the cut, and there’s a noticeable difference in the stylings between the two cuts. -

A COMMITMENT TO OUR MISSION Education Through Music-Los Angeles partners with inner-city schools with the mission to provide and pro- mote music in disadvantaged schools as a part of the core curriculum for every child to enhance students’ academic achievement, creativity and overall develop- ment. IN-SCHOOL MUSIC EDUCATION PROGRAMS Education Through Music-Los Angeles (ETM-LA) integrated its in-school music programs for under-served student populations with the mission to provide and promote the integration of mu- sic into the curriculum of disadvantaged schools in order to en- hance students’ academic performance, creativity, and general development. ETM-LA provides each of our partner schools with a 45-minute weekly music class on a yearlong basis. These classes provide an assortment of musical disciplines including violin, cello, guitar, recorder, general music, and chorus. Each school’s programs are tailored to meet the needs of each specific population based on the vision of the school’s principal, with the guidance of an ETM-LA consultant or mentor. Students at all partner schools performed in two concerts to showcase their musical learning in the fall and spring semesters. 2015-2016 Annual Report | 3 OUR PARTNER SCHOOLS To support the quality of instruction in the classroom and teach- ing artist’s ability to educate children, ETM-LA provided ongoing mentorship and evaluation of our music teachers by multiple staff (Executive Director, Program Director, and Mentor Teacher Supervisors). On August 15-19, 2016, ETM-LA held our week-long, intensive Summer Training Institute for new and returning music teachers and guest teaching artists from other arts organizations. -

Starz Animation Toronto Animates Shane Acker's Hit Movie '9' Using Autodesk Software September 17, 2009 SAN RAFAEL, Calif., Sept. 17 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Focus Features' animated, action-packed adventure "9", from director Shane Acker and producers Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov, spotlights animation from Starz Animation Toronto using Autodesk, Inc.'s (Nasdaq: ADSK) Autodesk Maya and Autodesk Mudbox 3D software. "9" tells the story of a post-apocalyptic world in which machines have destroyed the human race. A group of small creations was given the spark of life by a scientist in the final days of humanity, and they continue to exist post-apocalypse. With their group so few, these "stitchpunk" creations must summon individual strengths well beyond their own proportions in order to outwit and fight against still-functioning machines. At Starz Animation Toronto, 125 animation artists and 100 other employees completed work on "9" in just 14 months. Maya was used for asset creation, camera work and animation, while Mudbox was used for digital sculpting and texturing. Director of Photography Kevin Adams said, "'9' is a testament to what can be achieved with good planning, fearless execution, and great tools and support from Autodesk." The film's virtual camera is positioned only nine inches off the ground, showing the world from the characters' perspective. This zoomed-in view required highly detailed characters and environments. Adams explained, "Our greatest creative challenge was creating a close-up view that still felt visually rich. Every sequence has a new location with either a new stitchpunk character or an attacking monster." Starz Animation Toronto developed a tremendous amount of detail for each scene.
