LIBUSE Z U S K 0 VA Central Research Institute foT Plant Production, Department of Entomology, Praha-·Ruzyne

Abstract The present paper provides a review oJ the Czechos lovak species of the genus Platypalpus. A key to Czech.oslovak species and a !ist of species with their synonymy, systematic notes and occurrence in Czechoslovakia are included. Fo-rty species arH dealt with, three of them are here described as new tn science.

1. INTR.QD UCT ION The aim of this study is to present a critical review of the Czecho slovak species of the genus Platypalpus, which has up to now been lacking in the literature. The genus Plat, ypalpus represents a group of , rich in indivi duals and numerous in species, very difficult to study. In consequence there are very often nomenclatural and systematical obscurities in the older literature. The systematics of the genus was worked out satisfac torily as late as 1926 by Collin, though some important papers or books on the subject were published before that date (Frey, 1907; Melander, 1910, dealing with North American species; Lundbeck, 1910). Collin un dertook the immense work of revising the genus on the basis of study ing the types of almost all the described palaearctic species and ex plaining the synonymy of this group. The afore-mentioned paper is the very successful result of his studies. A further comprehensive publication is the revision by Engel ( 1939). Unfortunately, the appearance of this book did not mean much advancement in our knowledge as it was not written too carefully from the nomenclatural standpoint. Seguy ( 1942) published a rathe·r extensive paper on this genus. containing some de tailed re-descriptions and a key to species, and Frey ( 1943) a key to the palaearctic species of the genus. Recently Collin ( 1961) · reviewed the British species and this. work is also of extraordinary importance for the systematics of the genus P'latypalpus. The faunistic records referring to the Czechoslovak species of the genus Platypalpus are included in the papers by Dalla Torre ( 1878], Kowarz ( 1894], Czizek ( 1906], Landrock ( 1907, 1908, 1910], Brancsik

1 331 ( 1910), Vimmer ( 1913), Fekete ( 1914) and Thaihammer ( 1918 ), which were, however, all published before the appearance of Collin's revision. Therefore all records given in them are most unreliable. The revision of the available materials, having been a basis for those studies (from Czize.k, Landrock, and Vimmer's collections), showed that the greater number of the specimens were misidentified. For these reasons, only the captures revised by myself were considered, no other records were in cluded. However, this does not refer to single records in the papers published after Collin's revision, which are considered here. In the present paper the following abbreviations were used: NMP - deposited in the National Museum in Praha MMB deposited in the Mmavian Museum in Brno' ZZ - collected by L. Zuskovä and J. Zuska and deposited in their col- lection Lit - recmds in the Iiterature Mat - new or revised materials Boh - Bohemia Mor Moravia and Czechoslovak Silesia Slov - Slovakia

Brit., 1: 126 ? Tachydromia oedicnema Strobl, 1898, Mitt. Naturw. Ver. Steierm., 34: 211 The colour of the abdomen varies greatly. In the material investi gated by me both the two types of specimens, with black abdomen and those with yellowish abdomen, were present; and among them inter medial individuals with paler sterna and darker terga. It is not im· probable, however, that Platypalpus oedicnemus, a species characterized by abdomen partially yellowish, is a distinct spec'ies. Plat;ypalpus candicans is a speeies in which males occur extremely rarely. Iil Vimmer collection deposited at NMP is one male with abdo men conspicuously yellow and with the blaek hypopygium. Unfortuna tely, it is not pos~>ible to compare its hypopygium with that of any other specimen and no figure is present in the literature. Head: Frons and occiput dusted greyish. Face and clypeus with lighter greyish silvery dust. Frons about as wide as base of third anten· nal joint, as far as behind ocellar protuberance exceedingly widened. Face narrower than frons. Yellow ocellar bristles clearly visible, almost as lang as vertical bristles. These slightly darker, developed in one pair, only very faintly distant from each other. Upper part of occiput with short yellowish brown hairs, lower with Ionger whitish silvery ones. Antennae rather lang, entirely black. Third joint 2.5 to 3 times as lang as wide at its base, arista slightly longeor than this joint. Palpi modera tely large, egg-shaped, brownish black, with silvery dust and two lang pale yellow bristles at their top. Thorax: Mesonotum, scutellum and metanotum dusted greyish. Platypalpus niger ( Meigen, 1804) Tachydromia nigra Meigen, 1804, Klassif., 1: 238 Collin ( 1961) says that the continental individuals he has studied differ from the British in the possession of slightly dusted mesonotum. In Gzechoslovak specimens I found not only rather dusted mesonotum but also front slightly dusted brownish grey, in cantrast to the British flies I have investigated, which agree with Collin's description. Unfor tunately, I had no occasion to compare the hypopygia of both the spe · cies. I am of the opinion, however, that the British and Central Euro· pean specimens are conspecific. 4. SEX-RATIO OF PLATYPALPUS SPECIES IN CZECHOSLOVAKIA

It is a well-known faet that some speeies of the genus Platypalpus show the unbalaneed sex-ratio, whieh is apperently influeneed by their geographie parthenogenesis. Below, I give a reviev of the numbers of males and females of the partieular speeies, whieh were eaptured in Czeehoslovakia and examined by me, so as to eontribute to our know ledge of this phenomenon.
