residents noted crossing issues at a few specific intersecꢀons. Each intersecꢀon will require its own

review to determine the most appropriate treatment.

5. RECOMMENDED PROJECTS

This chapter discusses project recommendaꢀons for the Central Bench’s pedestrian and bicycle network. These infrastructure improvements are intended to enhance pedestrian/bicycle access and circulaꢀon as well as help pedestrians and bicyclists feel more comfortable traveling within and through the Central Bench. This chapter focuses on engineering and infrastructure improvements.
Lighꢀng at intersecꢀons should be carefully considered.
Table 3 provides further informaꢀon on each project idenꢀ- fied in Figure 16. Projects in Table 3 are listed alphabeꢀcally under their respecꢀve neighborhood associaꢀon and roadway funcꢀonal classificaꢀon. The table indicates if the project is also included in one of the previous plans described in Chapter 2. Many of the projects in Table 3 will be evaluated using ACHD’s Community Programs prioriꢀzaꢀon process. This process considers a range of factors (e.g., proximity to schools, major roads, available funding, city or school district support, etc.). Appendix ‘B’ contains more informaꢀon on this process, as well as the results of applying the techni-

cal criteria to the projects below. Note that scoring in Appen-

dix ‘B’ does not represent a complete or final prioriꢀzaꢀon of the projects.
The majority of the projects were idenꢀfied by members of

the public and agency stakeholders through the outreach

process. Several projects have been previously idenꢀfied in

the Roadways to Bikeways Plan or other planning documents.

PEDESTRIAN PROJECTS

Figure 16 shows the recommended set of projects to improve the exisꢀng pedestrian network in the Boise Central Bench study area. These projects will improve the connecꢀvity of the exisꢀng network and make walking a more comfortable and viable mode of transportaꢀon throughout the area. The projects recommended in this secꢀon were developed from a review of exisꢀng condiꢀons and needs, as described in the previous secꢀons, efforts to idenꢀfy all gaps in the sidewalk

network on arterial and collector roadways, walking route

maps prepared as part of the Treasure Valley YMCA Safe Routes to School Program, and comments received from

the general public through the previously described public involvement process. Recommended pedestrian projects

fall into four general categories:

verꢀcal and lateral separaꢀon from motor vehicles. Most pedestrian-related projects involve filling in gaps in the exisꢀng sidewalk network or repairing exisꢀng sidewalks that are in poor condiꢀon (i.e.

extreme heaving or cracking).

As Table 3 shows, there are 112 recommended pedestrian

projects (9 of which are already programmed for funding in ACHD’s Five-Year Work Program or Community Programs budget), including 103 sidewalk fill or repair projects, 2 shared-use paths, 3 streets to consider traffic calming on, and 4 intersecꢀon-specific projects. The table also shows that many of these projects have also been idenꢀfied as

needs by previous plans.

Determining the order projects are implemented in is ulꢀ- mately a combinaꢀon of technical scores, the public input described in Chapter 4, construcꢀon feasibility (e.g., a project that can be accomplished within exisꢀng public right-of-

way can be implemented sooner than a project that requires

property acquisiꢀon), and other programming factors. In

reviewing the recommended pedestrian projects with these

factors in mind, the following projects stand out as the recommended highest prioriꢀes:

Grace Jordan Elementary School Area: Improve walking

routes to Grace Jordan Elementary School, which is

located north of Overland Road between Curꢀs Road and Cole Road. This may include filling in sidewalk gaps, improving crossings, and/or construcꢀng curbseparated pedestrian paths; however, given the mix of

public comments in the area, more detailed study and

public involvement are needed to determine the final

treatments. Improvements in this area will need to

address concerns for providing safe walking routes to the school while limiꢀng impacts to property and the character of the exisꢀng neighborhood.

The final pedestrian treatment (ie. aꢁached versus detached sidewalk) for each project will be determined through ACHD’s yearly scoping effort. All pedestrian treatment recommendaꢀons will be shared with the neighborhood and the City for their review and comment in ACHD’s yearly scoping report. More informaꢀon on specific pedestrian treatment opꢀons that could be considered for each project can be found in Appendix ‘C.’

Introduction The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) started in 1993 as a mixed martial arts (MMA) tournament on pay‐per‐view to determine the world’s greatest martial arts style. Its main draw was its lack of rules. Weight classes did not exist and rounds continued until one of the competitors got knocked out or submitted to his opponent. Although the UFC initially achieved underground success, it was regarded more as a spectacle than a sport and never attained mainstream popularity. The perceived brutality of the event led to political scrutiny and pressure. Attacks from critics caused the UFC to establish a set of unified rules with greater emphasis placed on the safety. The UFC also successfully petitioned to become sanctioned by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. However, these changes occurred too late to have an impact and by 2001, the parent organization of the UFC was on the verge of bankruptcy. The brand was sold to Zuffa LLC, marking the beginning of the UFC’s dramatic rise in popularity. Over the next eight years, the UFC evolved from its underground roots into the premier organization of a rapidly growing sport.

SALT LAKE CITY HISTORIC LANDSCAPES REPORT Executive Summary

SALT LAKE CITY HISTORIC LANDSCAPES REPORT Executive Summary Warms Springs Park SLCHLR NO. 26 Warm Springs Park is located within the Capitol Hill National Historic District in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah. It fronts on Beck Street (300 West) and Wall Street at 840 North Beck Street. The Warm Springs Park landscape is not considered historic in and of itself; however, it has historic significance because of the recognition of the area encompassing the historic warm springs; and its association with past building site(s) including the original 1922 Warm Springs Municipal Bathhouse located directly to the north. Warm Springs Park was established as a neighborhood park in 1925. The nine-acre park is bordered by Beck Street to the west, Wall Street to the southwest, Victory Road to the east, the historic warm springs site and North Gateway Park to the north, and an electrical substation to the south. The park site is relatively flat, nestled into the lower slopes of West Capitol Hill. Victory Road is several stories higher than the park site, tracing the terrain of the hill. A mix of commercial and light industrial uses are located on the opposite side of Beck Street, with a mix of single-family and higher-density residential uses dominating the Wall Street environment and neighborhoods to the south. There are numerous historic residences in the vicinity of the park particularly to the south. The park is accessed from Beck Street (300 West) and Wall Street. The park is divided into three character-defining sections: Northern Entrance & Tennis Courts, Open Park and Southern Entrance & Playground.
