ver my many years of Temple membership and even more so over the last eight or nine years in which I have Obeen involved in Temple leadership, I have had many occasions to feel proud of Congregation Shaare Emeth. Surprise, I’m a raving fan. However, a few weeks ago, after attending an event at Shaare Emeth, I experienced a degree of pride and admiration that exceeded anything I had previously felt.

On Sunday, November 24, Shaare Emeth hosted an event called Gathering for Gratitude - A Day of Giving Back. On this day, Shaare Emeth members assembled Thanksgiving meals for the homebound on behalf of The Visiting Nurses Association. Cheerful cards were made to accompany each meal. Donated gifts were wrapped for the children at Oak Hill Elementary School. Backpacks were filled with blankets, hats, gloves, and toiletries for those who find themselves living on the streets of St. Louis. “Shaare Emeth is a Cookies were baked for our local first responders. Weeks before the event, the call for volunteers went out. Our congregational community caring, giving, and immediately responded, filling all of the more than 120 spots available. Many more congregants quickly signed up to donate food, gift cards, toys, books, and clothing. generous community.” Others volunteered to deliver meals to our homebound members.

On the day of the event, as volunteers started to arrive at Shaare Emeth, it occurred to me that during one of the busiest times of the year, the Sunday before Thanksgiving, our members weren’t thinking about themselves. They were thinking about others, about giving, about philanthropy. But what really warmed my heart was to see grandparents arriving hand-in-hand with their grandchildren, planting the seeds of Tzedakah (righteous giving) and Tikkun Olam (repairing the world), in our next generation. And in the case of Arden Poger, it was our youth confidently educating a room full of volunteers on the mission of Winter Outreach, a volunteer organization determined to prevent homeless St. Louisans from dying on the frigid streets.

As I watched this entire event unfold, I was bursting with pride. Shaare Emeth is a caring, giving, and generous community. On this day, we were true to our mission and core commitments. We gave Tzedakah, we practiced Tikkun Olam and yes, I know we created many raving fans of Congregation Shaare Emeth.

This event would not have been possible without the hard work of many special staff members and volunteers. Thank you to Debbie Bram, Rabbi Goldstein, Rabbi Levine, Cantor Warner, Karen Lucy, Beth Kodner, Lucy Greenbaum, Robert Colton, The Poger Family, Lorry Blath, Holly and Sarah Goldblum, and Dr. Gary Ratkin.

It’s a great time to be a member of the Shaare Emeth community. I wish you all the best in 2020.

To hear her speak from for our campers and try to have them gain the same love for her heart about camp was truly moving and with her permission, camp and for Judaism as I have. Camp Emeth’s motto is “where I have excerpted parts of her d’var torah to share... summer lasts a lifetime”. I want my impact and the impact the camp community to last a lifetime for our campers. Every summer since I was three, I have gone to camp here at Shaare Emeth. Spending the majority of my summers at Giving your child the gift of summer camp can and will camp, makes it feel like home… It is a place where I found a influence their development in so many positive ways. departed from St. Louis at 5:30 a.m. The ride home was even more exciting, as the weather quickly headed for Evansville, Indiana, to changed into the snow/ice mixture that made its way from St. Ipick up a bench. Not just any bench; Louis. I prayed no one would hit my car, as my knees and elbows it was a bench created from melted plastic were close to the steering wheel and I was hauling a 150-pound caps donated by the children, families and bench directly behind me. I had the front seats pushed all the staff at Congregation way up to offer enough space for the bench, and eventually, I Shaare Emeth. arrived safely in St. Louis at 7:30 p.m., on November 11. It was a complex mitzvah project that was so worthwhile. Let’s start from the beginning: Ms. Kayla, Director of Camp Micah, offered this recycling endeavor with the organization, Please stop by the preschool and take a look at our beautiful Green Tree Plastics, as a summer mitzvah. “What a great idea!” new eco-friendly rainbow bench. Ms. Kayla would like to thank we all thought. She encouraged everyone to collect plastic caps everyone who assisted with this project!! in order to rid the community of plastic, while collecting enough for a picnic bench. The goal was 150 pounds of plastic caps. Can Karen Lucy, you picture 150 pounds of plastic caps? It filled four dishwasher Director of Early Childhood Engagement appliance boxes. [email protected]

After a summer of devoted collecting from the entire congregation, the camp children sorted all the caps in preparation for their departure to Indiana. After that, the plastic lids had to reach their Evansville, Indiana destination.

Green Tree Plastics has a very rigorous checklist regarding the exchange of plastics for their bench. After meticulously checking off the items, one must phone for a scheduled appointment. The choices offered consisted of two dates in December, and November 11. After a moment of reflection, I agreed to November 11. My thought process led me to believe that I was less likely to encounter inclement weather on November 11 compared to December. Boy – was I wrong!

I arrived in Evansville, Indiana around 10:15 a.m. on November 11. Since my appointment was at 11 a.m., I pulled over to respond to text messages from the preschool regarding to a snow/ice mix in St. Louis. I pulled up at 11 to pick up the beautiful rainbow bench, and an employee with Green Tree Plastics informed me that the bench would not fit in my car. I responded, “I’m not leaving without it!” After coordinating our physical and mental efforts, we managed to manipulate the 150-pound rainbow bench into my car. And for his efforts, I offered to get lunch for him.

12 Shirlee Green Preschool Jewish Q&A For Those Who Might Be Curious…

Starting this month, we are adding a new section to our Bulletin entitled, For Those Who Might Be Curious. We will have guest authors answer questions about Judaism, Jewish practices, and Jewish thought. If you have a suggestion for a question, please contact Subie Banaszynski, our Interfaith Coordinator, at [email protected]. Question: Why are we called the “Chosen People?”

Rabbi Bennett responds:

One of the most controversial and challenging ideas throughout Jewish history has been the suggestion that the Jewish people are “God’s Chosen People.” The origin of this idea comes from the Bible, where we repeatedly read that God “chose” Abraham and his descendants to enter into a covenantal relationship with God. Later, the prophets tell us that God “took the Jewish People by the hand to be a kingdom of priests and a light unto the nations.” If understood literally, it is easy to conclude that the Jews have a special relationship with God. Yet generations of Jewish thinkers suggest otherwise, arguing that we are not God’s chosen, but rather, God’s “choosing people.” In our Reform Jewish tradition, rejecting a narrow view of Jewish particularity, we instead understand our faith as part of a more unifying and universalistic world view. We understand that the Jewish people are a unique faith community, but we also view our relationship with God as a reflection of our decision to choose God. Rejecting the premise that we are superior to any other people or faith community, we instead focus upon the opportunity each of us has to forge a relationship with God that is holy, inspiring, and good. We believe that Jews will draw together with those of every faith, nation, and ethnicity to work together in our common purpose; to imagine that day when our understanding of God will unite us in hope, and in peace.
