History Channel Debuts 10-Hour Miniseries ‘The Bible’ History channel debuts 10-hour miniseries ‘The Bible’ By John Mulderig Catholic News Service NEW YORK – Considered strictly as a work of literature, few volumes can rival the Bible for high-stakes drama, intriguing characters, tumultuous action and sheer spectacle. So it’s no surprise that Hollywood turned to the Good Book early on – director Sidney Olcott’s short film “David and Goliath,” for example, was released in 1908 – or that Scripture-based stories remained a big-screen fixture well into the 1960s. Television has also seen its fair share of Bible adaptations. In fact, Franco Zeffirelli’s 1977 miniseries “Jesus of Nazareth” – co-written primarily with Catholic-reared novelist Anthony Burgess and celebrated Italian screenwriter Suso Cecchi d’Amico – is arguably superior to any cinematic treatment of its sacred subject. It aired on ITV in Britain and on NBC in the United States. The latest small-screen offering in the genre is the History cable channel’s 10-hour miniseries “The Bible.” Created by the husband-and-wife team of Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, and narrated by Keith David – who has narrated many Ken Burns documentaries – this survey of salvation history from Genesis to Revelation premiered with back-to-back episodes March 3, 8-10 p.m. EST. Even with such a large canvas to fill, considerable compression is needed to encompass the many centuries that separate the Garden of Eden from St. John’s vision of the end times. This becomes obvious right at the start as the story of creation and the fall of Adam and Eve are recounted by Noah to his companions in the already storm-tossed ark. It’s a reasonably deft solution, and sets the brisk pace that will carry the audience, by the end of the second episode screened, through the Exodus and on to Joshua’s (Andrew Scarborough) siege of Jericho. Among the early passages dramatized, two stand out as highlights: Abraham’s (Gary Oliver) interaction with his sons and Moses’ (William Houston) parting of the Red Sea. Both Ishmael’s exile and the preparations for the sacrifice of Isaac (Hugo Rossi) are poignant, while the computer-generated imagery used to recreate the separation of the waters represents technical wizardry at its best. Along with the impressive special effects, the script manages to make the Egyptians’ pursuit of the escaping Israelites feel like a genuine cliffhanger. Whether in the interests of family-friendly viewing or political correctness, the goings-on at Sodom are sanitized to make it seem that the locals are macho warriors looking to kill Lot’s (Antonio Magro) angelic guests rather than abuse them. While there’s little, overall, of concern in the portrayal of sexuality – one character does insult a woman by calling her a “whore” – violence is another matter. A good deal of screen time is devoted to combat and, while much of it is stylized, there is some brutality and gore. Parents will have to assess whether children old enough to benefit from this shortcut to biblical literacy will also be able to take such mayhem in stride. Beyond introducing stories with which every well-educated adult should be familiar, will “The Bible” serve to awaken or enhance viewers’ faith? Devotion to the will of God is certainly the underlying motivation for all the major characters. But, as many of the Scripture-themed features of yesteryear demonstrate, faith is among the more difficult aspects of the human experiences to portray. The sheer gravity of the test to which Abraham is subjected makes his unlimited trust in God clear. But at other times “The Bible” seems more focused on swords and sandals than on souls. Perhaps the later episodes devoted to the person of Jesus can be expected to shift the emphasis and convey a keener sense of the divine presence. Back-to-back installments of “The Bible” continue Sundays through Easter, March 31, 8-10 p.m. EDT each night. Mulderig is on the staff of Catholic News Service. • Black Soldiers in Liberal Hollywood
Katherine Kinney Cold Wars: Black Soldiers in Liberal Hollywood n 1982 Louis Gossett, Jr was awarded the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Gunnery Sergeant Foley in An Officer and a Gentleman, becoming theI first African American actor to win an Oscar since Sidney Poitier. In 1989, Denzel Washington became the second to win, again in a supporting role, for Glory. It is perhaps more than coincidental that both award winning roles were soldiers. At once assimilationist and militant, the black soldier apparently escapes the Hollywood history Donald Bogle has named, “Coons, Toms, Bucks, and Mammies” or the more recent litany of cops and criminals. From the liberal consensus of WWII, to the ideological ruptures of Vietnam, and the reconstruction of the image of the military in the Reagan-Bush era, the black soldier has assumed an increasingly prominent role, ironically maintaining Hollywood’s liberal credentials and its preeminence in producing a national mythos. This largely static evolution can be traced from landmark films of WWII and post-War liberal Hollywood: Bataan (1943) and Home of the Brave (1949), through the career of actor James Edwards in the 1950’s, and to the more politically contested Vietnam War films of the 1980’s. Since WWII, the black soldier has held a crucial, but little noted, position in the battles over Hollywood representations of African American men.1 The soldier’s role is conspicuous in the way it places African American men explicitly within a nationalist and a nationaliz- ing context: U.S. history and Hollywood’s narrative of assimilation, the combat film.

  • Rede Record Brazil's 'Os Dez Mandamentos': You Still Haven't Seen It All
Rede Record Brazil's 'Os Dez Mandamentos': You Still Haven't Seen It All 04.04.2016 Regarded as the great sensation of Brazilian television, the biblical telenovela Os Dez Mandamentos (The Ten Commandments), returns for a second season, with a warning: you still haven't seen it all. The series, penned by Vivian de Oliveira, will premiere Monday, April 4, at 8:30 p.m. on Rede Record Brazil. The channel - considered Brazil's second-largest producer of original content with a total of more than 90 hours per week - offers programming focused on the Brazilian family. The novela's first season was exported to Argentina, where it aired on Telefe in prime time, becoming the country's most-watched program in its debut, scoring a 14.9 household ratings average. Also, the production has been turned into a film, where it became the second biggest box-office hit in the history of Brazilian cinema. The launch campaign for the show's second season builds on this phenomenon. "The great secret behind the excellent results obtained by The Ten Commandments has been selling the product as a telenovela, and not as a biblical story," says Alexandre Barbosa Machado de Souza, on-air creative promos coordinator for Rede Record. This is why since season one the communication strategy has focused "more on the plot than the biblical aspects, including the romances, the conflicts, the betrayals and the drama that all major soap operas have," Souza says. As for the show's Biblical origins, Marcelo Caetano, programming director of Rede Record, says "we have been producing this type of content since 2010.

  • The Life of Moses #25 February 2, 2020
The Life of Moses #25 February 2, 2020 “The 10 Plagues upon Egypt” Part 5 Exodus 7-12 Introduction: Tonight, we return to the first of the ten plagues which God brought upon Egypt. This plague consisted of the water being turned into blood. This beginning of plagues would have been devastating to the Egyptians. The Nile River was the lifeline which flowed through the land. Let me review the points which we looked at last week. 1. The Reproving before the Plague Notice Exodus 7:14-16 Pharaoh was given fair warning before the plague. We considered this thought before, but I will remind you again that God always brings a warning before His judgment falls. 2. The Revelation in the Plague Notice Exodus 7:17 One of the purposes of all the plagues would be to educate the people of Egypt and Israel about God. 3. The Ruin of the Plague. Notice Exodus 7:19-21 This plague was devasting to the Egyptians. The river waters and the ponds were all turned to blood. It would affect three areas of their lives: 1. Their food supplies. 2. Their environment. 3. Their economy. Egypt was desert country. They depended completely upon the Nile for irrigation as well as soil to put upon their fields. Most of Egypt’s trade and commerce depended upon the Nile River. This plague was a great blow to every area in Egypt. 4. The Reaping of the Plague. This plague of water to blood brought upon Egypt was the reaping of that which they were guilty of in the past.

  • And the Hamitic Hypothesis
religions Article Ancient Egyptians in Black and White: ‘Exodus: Gods and Kings’ and the Hamitic Hypothesis Justin Michael Reed Department of Biblical Studies, Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, Louisville, KY 40205, USA; [email protected] Abstract: In this essay, I consider how the racial politics of Ridley Scott’s whitewashing of ancient Egypt in Exodus: Gods and Kings intersects with the Hamitic Hypothesis, a racial theory that asserts Black people’s inherent inferiority to other races and that civilization is the unique possession of the White race. First, I outline the historical development of the Hamitic Hypothesis. Then, I highlight instances in which some of the most respected White intellectuals from the late-seventeenth through the mid-twentieth century deploy the hypothesis in assertions that the ancient Egyptians were a race of dark-skinned Caucasians. By focusing on this detail, I demonstrate that prominent White scholars’ arguments in favor of their racial kinship with ancient Egyptians were frequently burdened with the insecure admission that these ancient Egyptian Caucasians sometimes resembled Negroes in certain respects—most frequently noted being skin color. In the concluding section of this essay, I use Scott’s film to point out that the success of the Hamitic Hypothesis in its racial discourse has transformed a racial perception of the ancient Egyptian from a dark-skinned Caucasian into a White person with appearance akin to Northern European White people. Keywords: Ham; Hamite; Egyptian; Caucasian; race; Genesis 9; Ridley Scott; Charles Copher; Samuel George Morton; James Henry Breasted Citation: Reed, Justin Michael. 2021. Moses and Miriam Praise God Bible Background • EXODUS 14:1–15:1-21 Printed Text • EXODUS 15:11–21 | Devotional Reading • PSALM 105:1–2, 37–45 Aim for Change By the end of this lesson, we will EXPLORE why and how Moses and Miriam praised God; REFLECT on the actions of God that are celebrated through music, dance, and words; and CELEBRATE God’s faithfulness with joy. In Focus “FIRE DEPARTMENT, CALL OUT!” “Over here!” Ramona cried, coughing. The smoke stung her eyes and was so thick that she couldn’t see where the voice was coming from. The disaster had been sudden. One moment, she was typing away at her desk. The next, there was a quick rumble from the ground that shook the floor and shattered the floor-to-ceiling windows. Part of the ceiling frame fell to the floor, dragging down tiles and light fixtures. Some of the sprinklers came on and drenched everything nearby, but others were broken. The way to the exit stairs was blocked with flaming debris. Ramona prayed, “Heavenly Father, please bring me to safety.” She could hear the firefighters crashing through the wreckage to get to her. “OVER HERE!” she shouted again. Ramona could see the shapes of the firefighters coming forward in the dark, knocking aside desks and chairs and filing cabinets. The water sprayed from their hoses sizzled and turned to steam as it hit the flames, adding to the chaotic scene. But after a moment, two of them emerged like ghosts and crouched next to her. “Praise God! I am so grateful to see you!” Ramona cried.
