Patricia Anawalt The Ethnic History of the Toltecs as Reflected in their Clothing* Guiado por el interés en señalar la importancia que el análisis de las vestimentas tiene para la reconstrucción cultural, este artículo considera la historia étnica de los toltecas a tra- vés de un examen de sus prendas de vestir. Para este propó- sito se ha establecido la hipótesis que la historia y las rela- ciones sociales de un pueblo pueden ser reconstruidas gracias a determinadas características en sus vestimentas. La investi- gación se ha centrado en el xicolli. Resulta que este traje típico experimentó una cierta transformación desde el clásico y postclásico temprano yucateco, donde constituía una prenda de guerra, hasta su uso como traje ritual y distintivo de la clase alta en el postclásico tardío de la región central de México. Este cambio parece haberse originado en la región huasteca, concretamente en el área desde el cual los nonoalcas, repre- sentantes de la antigua tradición teotihuacana, emprendieron la migración hacia Tollan. BOOK REVIEWS The Woman in the Zoot Suit: Gender, Nationalism, and the Cultural Politics of Memory, by Catherine S. Ramírez (Durham, NC: Duke University Press, 2009. 229 pp. Paper, $22.95.) Reviewed by María Angela Díaz ccording to historian Catherine S. Ramírez, women are conspicuously ab- sent from the story of the World War II era, the zoot suit, and the creation Aof Chicano cultural nationalism. In The Woman in the Zoot Suit: Gender, Nationalism, and the Cultural Politics of Memory, Ramírez admirably sets out to correct this problem through her discussion of pachucas and their involvement in zoot-suit culture as well as the 1942 Sleepy Lagoon case and the Zoot-Suit Riots. While recent studies such as Luis Alvarez’s The Power of the Zoot: Youth Culture and Resistance During World War II address the suit’s importance to Mexican Americans and other ethnic and racial groups, Ramírez creatively links the zoot-suit culture of the 1940s with the Chicana/o artists of later de- cades to reveal how these artists redefined the pachuco and the zoot suit, mak- ing both icons of Chicano/a culture. She demonstrates that women were not simply hangers-on, but were integral to the formation of this culture, and that Chicana feminists used the memory of the pachuca in poetry and art to create their own version of Chicano/a nationalism that did not cast them as strange or beyond the scope of proper Chicano/a gender roles. The first of the book’s two sections focuses on the World War II era and American nationalism, while the second emphasizes the movement-era develop- ment of Chicano/a nationalism. -

The exceptional and artistic renderings and context for these figures from Campeche, Mexico has led to problems of looting and forgeries that have created obstacles for scholars trying to understand this body of work. A careful consideration of the stylistic features and grouping of individual figurines to determine their authenticity and meaning is therefore a step that can be undertaken to attempt to chip away at this problem. -

DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE_________________________________________ The UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center (CSRC) was founded in 1969 with a commitment to foster multi-disciplinary research as part of the overall mission of the university. Given the CSRC’s broad campus- and community-wide mandate to foster multi-disciplinary research, it reports to the UCLA Office of the Chancellor. The CSRC is also a co-founder of the Inter- University Program for Latino Research (IUPLR), a consortium of Latino research centers located at twenty-five institutions in the United States. Here They Have Been Freely Available to Readers for Many Years
NAHUA NEWSLETTER NEWS Welcome to issue number 45 of the Nahua Newsletter. The NN started over 22 years ago to encourage communication among scholars and students who share an interest in Nahua culture, history, and language. The focus is on Nahuatl-speaking peoples but the scope of the newsletter has expanded to include topics broadly related to indigenous Mesoamerica. The NN is published in the service of its readers and we encourage you to participate by sending news of your work and interests. It pays to network and the NN makes it easy for beginners and seasoned scholars to stay in touch with one another. In the following pages you will find announcements, descriptions of some recent publications, and a directory update. The NN has been highly successful throughout the years and readers have often expressed their satisfaction with the publication. We currently have over 400 subscribers living and working in 15 different countries and we add new readers with each issue. But like all similar publications the NN must adapt to the changing circumstances of our times. As long-time readers know, the NN is supported solely by donations from readers with occasional help from the Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) Department of Anthropology and the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies program at Indiana University Bloomington. The major problem we face is that even as donations from readers remain steady, the costs of printing and mailing the NN have skyrocketed. Postal rates have increased significantly, particularly for overseas subscribers. The cost of paper has risen and so have IPFW's charges for printing each issue. -
