    May 2013: Pilgrimage blog, Chris Potter. BASINGWERK TO LLANASA Light rain overnight and the wind has dropped. My legs feeling reluctant to get started, a familiar feeling after first day of pilgrimage. Remember a Frenchman telling us on our first day on the Camino just outside Le Puy - "The first day is difficult, and the next is nothing like as easy!" Yesterday 25 of us gathered at Basingwerk Abbey for our short starting out liturgy, reminding ourselves of the Saints who first set out across Wales some 1500 years ago. The mural made by excluded school children under the guidance of ceramic sculptor Neil Dalrymple looks magnificent, with lots of quirky characters popping up Breughel-like as the children threaded their own narrative journey along the pilgrimage route from Basingwerk to Bardsey. We made our way up Greenfield Valley, past the industrial heritage sites and through scruffy sheds and garages to emerge on the road near Winifride's well, primroses and speedwell mixed in with the daffodils on the bank across the road. Cutting up through the Holway, over the main road and up towards Pantasaph, stopping from time to time to climb stiles and look back across to the Wirral and the solid brown tower of Liverpool Cathedral. Sunlight picking out the sandy edge of Lancashire disappearing into the mist further north. A chilly and speedy lunch at Pantasaph, the wind quite sharp and biting, but pilgrims content sitting on benches in the lee of the churchyard wall. Shortly after we set off again we were joined by Padraig Ward who will be meeting us again at Aberdaron to receive the pilgrim staff as he returns with it to St Asaph Cathedral, promoting the Hungry for Change Campaign on the way in advance of the G8 summit in June.

    Review of Special Landscape Areas in Gwynedd and Anglesey: Executive Summary In 2012 Anglesey and Gwynedd Joint Planning Policy Unit (JPPU) commissioned independent consultants, LUC, to undertake a thorough review of local landscape designations (Special Landscape Areas) in the two counties. Special Landscape Areas (SLAs) are defined by the Countryside Council for Wales as ‘areas of high landscape importance for their intrinsic physical, environmental, visual, cultural and historical value in the contemporary landscape’ (2008). This review followed a four-stage approach combining both a desk study review of evidence (including LANDMAP) and field survey work. The four stages in the review were as follows: Stage 1: Defining Strategic Criteria – establishing whether there is a valid, defensible and clearly justified need for SLA designations in Gwynedd and Anglesey. The study defined a set of six criteria against which each potential SLA was judged, ensuring that in every case a consistent process was followed in considering the need for local designation. Stage 2: Establishing Broad Search Areas – including querying and combining the evaluation scores from across the five LANDMAP Evaluated Aspects. The existing location of Landscape Conservation Areas (LConAs) in Gwynedd provided a key starting point for this stage, but the current LANDMAP data (and other mapped evidence) was also used to help refine and, where necessary, propose new SLAs. Stage 3: Establishing Specific Special Landscape Areas – individual SLAs were further refined by more detailed desk-based work and field survey. For each SLA identified, a clear statement of need was drafted and any links/amendments to the current designations (Gwynedd’s LConAs) documented.

    Buses around Bangor Major updates 2013 Much new information has become available, primarily on Internet, since our last review some six years ago, enabling clarification and considerable expansion of our original document. More photographs are added, mainly courtesy of Alan Murray-Rust, whose visit to the area in October 1969 was blessed with bright, sunny weather. His images are denoted (AM-R) in our text below and further illustrate the many different vehicle types and colourful liveries to be seen then. Now that over 600 vehicles are listed, the fleet details have been taken out into a separate spreadsheet accompanying this article, enabling easy sorting or filtering. All known operators in Caernarfonshire and Anglesey are covered, from around 1950 to 1970 and sometimes a little beyond. Note that minibuses (fewer than 15 seats) are not generally included, nor are vehicles purchased new after 1964 (the latter tend to be well recorded already, e.g. on the Internet). For a few years after 1971, very few new vehicles were purchased by operators in the area, and used-vehicle trades were somewhat reduced, due to the prevailing economic situation. The disposal dates are often approximate only; they may range from the last date on which a vehicle was known to be licensed, to the date when it was sold. In some cases, old vehicles were just left out in the depot yard or elsewhere to rot away over many years! Recommended Reading There has been very little material published to date on the bus and coach companies of north-west Wales. One exception is the detailed history of Whiteway, Waunfawr, by former employee Bill Rear published by Gwynedd Archives Service in 2001 (ISBN 0901 3378 11).
