  • Can Milwaukee Festivals Compete?
Arts and Entertainment Summer 2010 _________________ Donna the Buffalo’s Tara Nevins, left, and Woody Platt of Steep Canyon Rangers, both have played in Milwaukee, but are local festivals too big to showcase quality? Photos by Geoff Davidian Smaller venues offer sober, cleaner, family-friendly chance to see popular acts By GEOFF DAVIDIAN ILKESBORO, North Carolina – It was Sunday morning and Dan Fedoryka looked every bit a Baptist preacher in his white suit as he stepped out of the Church Bus, walked a hundred or so yards over a worn path and mounted the raised platform where he would perform a ritual that has become familiar in this Appalachian community. The sun was shining and it was already in the 80s when the 30-year-old former student at a Ukrainian seminary slipped off his jacket, folded it and placed it neatly on the back of a chair, rolled up his sleeves and turned to the energetic congregation. Then Fedoryka strapped on his guitar and jumped over some speakers to join his brother Alexander, childhood friend Josef Crosby and Mike Ounallah as the band Scythian jumped right into its third performance in two days at MerleFest, the annual gathering in Wilkesboro, NC, to worship and be baptized in quintessential American music. MerleFest began 22 years ago as a celebration of traditional American folk and bluegrass music but after more than two decades, it has opened its arms to a broader slice of regional and national talent. The event, dedicated to the memory of Eddy Merle Watson and to raise money for the Wilkes Community College, was held this year from April 28 to May 1 on the college campus.

If you have any passion at all for bluegrass or old timey music then this will be (hands down) your album of the year. Loudon Wainwright is an artist I have long admired since I heard a song called “Samson and the Warden” (a wonderfully witty tale of a guy who doesn’t mind being in gaol so long as the warden doesn’t cut his hair) on an ABC radio show called “Room to Move” many years ago. A few years later he had his one and only “hit” with the novelty “Dead Skunk”. Now Loudon pundits will compare the instrumentation on this album with that on that song, and if a real pundit with that of his “The Swimming Song”. The backing is restrained. Banjo (Poole’s own instrument of choice), with guitar, some great mandolin (from Chris Thile) some fiddle (multi instrumentalist David Mansfield), some piano and harmonica and on a couple of tracks some horns. Now, Charlie Poole to the uninitiated was a major star in the very early days of country music. He is said to have pursued a musical career so he wouldn’t have to work and at the same time he could ensure his primary source of income, bootleg liquor, was properly distilled. He was no writer and adapted songs he had heard to his style.

  • Kathy Mattea
KATHY MATTEA Kathy Mattea has enjoyed the kind of success many artists only dream of: two GRAMMY wins, four CMA Awards, five gold albums, and a platinum collection of her greatest hits. Mattea’s dream almost ended, though, when she entered her 50s and found her voice changing. As much as she wanted to ignore the warning signs, there was no getting around the fact that she simply wasn’t hitting the notes she used to. Taking the stage and giving anything less than her best wasn’t an option, so as far as Mattea was concerned, there were only two choices: re-learn to sing, or walk away forever. “The hardest thing was facing the question of whether or not I could continue,” she reflects. “I had to be willing to come to a ‘no,’ to accept that my singing voice just might not be something I enjoyed anymore. There were days when I believed it was very likely I wouldn’t be able to go on.” Mattea persevered, though, undergoing intensive vocal training and emerging with the most poignant album of her career, ‘Pretty Bird.’ Recorded over the course of a year with roots music wizard Tim O’Brien at the helm, ‘Pretty Bird’ draws its strength not only from Mattea’s touching performances, but also from her uncanny ability to weave seemingly disparate material into a cohesive whole. These are the songs that helped her reclaim her voice, and though they’re drawn from a wide swath of writers, genres, and eras, she inhabits each as fully as if it were her own.

Jeremy Kittel Band fiery blend of jazz, Celtic fiddling, and sultry world grooves “Outstanding Michigan Celtic-jazz-bluegrass fiddle whiz … “ — The Boston Globe “We’d call him a rising star, but he’s clearly already risen.“ — Detroit Free Press If you should run into Jeremy Kittel somewhere on this planet, ask him any question except “What’s your favorite style of music?” It’s not that he’ll be so offended as to reprimand you with his violin bow — on the contrary. As anyone who has seen him in concert can attest, his talent is matched by a kind of confident good nature that once spurred the Ann Arbor News to write, “If he didn’t come across as so nice, he’d be a little scary.” It’s just that Kittel, as someone who is truly steeped in a few very different musical traditions, has heard that question before … many times before, and it’s easy to understand why. When a musician is as likely to be found playing a ferocious set of reels in some dark pub in Ireland as he is likely to be found trading licks with a saxophonist at a hip New York City jazz club — and he is occasionally even seen doing such apparently odd-ball joining Turtle Island Quartet, Kittel was earning his masters things as exploring Indian classical music on stage at Carnegie degree in jazz performance at the Manhattan School of Music Hall — one starts to wonder … what is it that drives him? and skipping town on weekends to perform across the country Whatever the source of his inspiration may be, it has led to alongside fiddle legends Mark O’Connor and Darol Anger.

  • Barbican Announces Rescheduled Concerts for 2021
For immediate release: Wednesday 27 May 2020 Barbican announces rescheduled concerts for 2021 The Barbican today announced that a selection of concerts that were due to take place at the Centre between March and July have now been rescheduled for 2021, subject to Government guidance. Huw Humphreys, Barbican’s Head of Music says: “This is an extraordinarily challenging time for the arts and artists. At the Barbican, we exist to bring artists together, to create together and to connect people across the world, and so this current situation goes against everything we’re here to do. By putting these rescheduled concerts on sale, we want to support artists and our partners in the music industry, and make sure we’re able to get up and running as soon as the guidance allows us to. Until then we are looking how we can stay connected to artists and audiences in different ways.” The rescheduled concerts and artists include: • Shabaka & the Ancestors, featuring Shabaka Hutchings, one of the foremost proponents of the current British jazz scene (now on 24 January 2021) • Irish-American vocalist and songwriter Aoife O’Donovan (now on 28 January 2021) • Celebrated violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter in recital performing Beethoven sonatas (now on 23 February 2021) • Singer, songwriter and composer Damon Albarn’s new project The Nearer the Fountain, More Pure the Stream Flows (now on 30 March 2021) • A MoodSwing Reunion, featuring generation-defining jazz musicians and long-time collaborators Joshua Redman, Brad Mehldau, Christian McBride and Brian Blade (now
