There would be no Nirvana, Beastie Boys or Red Hot Chili Peppers were it not for hardcore pioneers such as Black Flag, Bad Brains and Minor Threat. Hardcore was more than music—it was a social movement created by Reagan-era misfit kids. The participants constituted a tribe unto themselves—some finding a voice, others an escape in the hard-edged music. And while some sought a better world, others were just angry and wanted to raise hell. AMERICAN HARDCORE traces this lost subculture, from its early roots in 1980 to its extinction in 1986. Page 2 ABOUT THE PRODUCTION Paul Rachman and Steven Blush met through the hardcore punk rock scene in the early 1980s. Steven promoted shows in Washington, DC, and Paul directed the first music videos for bands like Bad Brains and Gang Green.

  • How Much Art Can You Take?
HOW MUCH ART CAN YOU TAKE? I go to an art museum It’s more like a mausoleum — Really Red, “No Art In Houston” The term “Hardcore art” is an oxymoron. Hardcore types fancied themselves dismissive of all art. Theirs was an essentially undecorated, unadorned world. Yet the term will be useful herein. Hardcore communicated through low-tech graphics that read as art. Appropriated shards of advertising and photojournalism comprised stark stylistic hodge-podges announcing shows and records. The graphics, like the music, challenged brain-dead consumers, Reagan’s government, and multi- national corporations. WINSTON SMITH (artist): There was a drive to get away from fine, finished-looking work that looked like it came out of a record company art department. Instead of creating overblown work that makes the individual feel smaller, Hardcore made the individual feel included. It was not a glamour trip; the artwork was chaotic and spontaneous. Hardcore kids dismissed art as a bourgeois indulgence. Of course enough of it seeped into the mix to encourage an identifiable art style fusing collage, illustration and typography, almost always in black-and-white. A tribal iconography manifested itself in distinct record covers and gig flyers, with a politically incorrectness proclaiming, “This is hard-core.” GLENN DANZIG (The Misfits): It had a definite look and style — there’s an art to brutality. That’s why Example of Hardcore era art certain boxers are better than others — there’s an art. Flyer for Wasted Youth Reagan’s In album, 1981 Collection of the author Hardcore fans claimed to hate anything with “art school” pretense or pseudo-intellectualism, and felt “arty” types lacked intensity.

  • Don't Sleep Is a New Band from Harrisburg, PA and Washington
Don’t Sleep is a new band from Harrisburg, PA and Washington D.C. featuring Dave Smalley, the singer of influential hardcore and punk bands such as Dag Nasty, Down By Law, DYS, and All, as well as Garrett Rothman (bass), Tom McGrath (guitar), Jim Bedorf (drums), and Tony Bavaria (guitar), who have also played in a number of bands previously on labels such as Blackout Records, Eulogy Recordings, Art Monk Construction, Sony, and Megaforce. While originally Don’t Sleep started to back Dave up while playing songs from his former bands, the members all became fast friends and quickly began writing new material. The music they created was not only influenced by Dave and his former bands, but the records that all the members have been listening to and have been influenced by over the years. Since beginning to write new music, Don’t Sleep has released a European exclusive vinyl release on Unity Worldwide Records and a US vinyl release on hardcore mainstay Reaper Records. One of these songs was cowritten and has bass playing provided by Chris Bavaria, the bass player from React Records’ bands Mindset and Praise. Reviews and reactions have been positive with sites like Brooklyn Vegan, Stereogum, Punknews, No Echo, Dying Scene and others writing about the band. While Don’t Sleep’s music can be described as aggressive, fast, and energetic, they’ve managed to infuse melody and an element of pop sensibility into their songs. Additionally, while callbacks and influences to classic hardcore and punk bands such as 7 Seconds, Judge, Black Flag, and Bad Brains can be heard in their songs, a current/modern element is present as well.
