These are only accessible to members of the public on foot so only the occasional walker disturbs the peace enjoyed by the cattle here. Fact File Distance 13km (8 miles) Time 4 hours Map OS Explorer 301 Scarborough & Bridlington At the square in the centre of Hunmanby, Start/Parking opposite the Church Terrain Field paths, farm tracks, and minor roads nearest Town Filey A pub in Muston, and a choice of pubs, take- aways, etc in Hunmanby - the Cottage Inn on Refreshments the Square is recommended for morning coffee, good beer and good food. Toilets Hunmanby - opposite the Square East Yorkshire buses (service 121, Hull - Public Scarborough) serve Hunmanby as do trains Transport on the Hull - Scarborough line. Suitable for all Stiles 5 1. (Start) From the square, set off past the church and bear left at the mini- roundabout up Castle Hill. Continue on up the roadside to the top of the http://www.dalestrails.co.uk/Hunmanby.htm 1/3 10/11/2017 Dales Trails hill and there take the farm track left signed Centenary Way. Go past Windmill Farm and in about 1 km (3/4 mile) you reach Field House Farm. Here keep to the left of the buildings as waymarked, turning right at the far corner of the barn and then left to join a clear track. This track maintains a straight course across the rolling landscape. 2. (3km, 2 miles) At a T-junction turn right down a stony track, still on the Centenary Way. At the bottom continue straight along the field side with a fence on your right to arrive at a stile (with Countryside Stewardship Access Information) giving access into Camp Dale. Walk along the dale to a pond where the dale forks. There will probably be cattle grazing in this area. 3. (4.5km, 3 miles) Take the right-hand fork, signed Wolds Way, into Stockingdale. After negotiating a stile by a gate - it can be very muddy here - a gradual climb leads to a right turn by Long Plantation. This track leads past Stockendale Farm, which has the added attraction of a row of derelict Renault cars adorning the verge! Upon reaching the road, cross straight over (beware of fast traffic) and continue along a clear track with a hedge on your right. A panoramic view opens up before you - from the North York Moors to Scarborough Castle prominent on its headland, round to Cayton Bay, and Filey. 4. (7.2km, 4½ miles) Look out for a gap in the hedge and there turn right to follow the Wolds Way diagonally across a field to a stile. From there walk on downhill, keeping to the field sides, eventually coming to stile in the corner. Over the stile bear right along the A1039 road. At first there is no footpath, but as you enter Muston village cross over to use the path on the left-hand side of the road. Walk through the village passing the Ship Inn and the Church and on round a sharp left-hand bend. 5. (9km, 6 miles) About 75m (80yds) past the corner the Wolds Way heads off to the left, but your route continues on up the roadside path. Just before the road junction, cross to a path on the right-hand side and follow this round by the A165. Walk along the verge of this busy road to the Filey roundabout. Here, turn right onto a farm track rejoining the Centenary Way. This takes you along field sides and finally across a field to a stile at the left-hand side of North Moor Farm. Head along the farm track, which becomes a metalled lane leading back into Hunmanby. On reaching the housing estate continue straight on to return to the centre of the village. 6. (Optional) Explore Hunmanby by following the Village Millennium Trail, starting from the Church. Plaques identify the relevant buildings on this trail - the Church and the White Swan Inn opposite being two of them. Along the Way Centuries ago, this part of the Wolds was the site of a settlement for earlier Britons, and traces of the earthworks of their encampment exist on the valley sides - hence the name Camp Dale. In fact a glance at the map shows the countryside around is dotted with evidence of those early inhabitants. Today, Hunmanby is the major settlement and offers a wide range of amenities. The village centre has some interesting old buildings and these are featured in the village Millennium Trail, which starts at the 11th century Church of All Saints. Route Overview Cape Wrath Cluanie Inn Croy Hexham Malton Oakham London Farnham Dover 1 Having completed walking from Land’s End to John O’Groats, an end to end walk from the most south-easterly point of England to Scotland's north-west extremity seems the obvious successor. Furthermore, this walk was to be done in sections of about two weeks. Thus an important requirement was the ability for the start and finish point of each section to have good transport links. Having stayed westward up to the Scottish border and then gone up the centre of Scotland on the Land's End to John O'Groats walk, the choice for this new trek was to adopt a more easterly route in England followed by a more westerly route through Scotland. Using this approach, coupled with a wish to avoid London, the inland start/end points evolved as Farnham, Oakham, Malton, Hexham, Croy (in Scotland's Central Belt) and the Cluanie Inn in Glen Shiel. The walk commenced in 2013 and was completed over four years and obviously the route described relates to the conditions found when walked. I was accompanied up to Croy by Gwen, my usual walking companion, but after she got injured Gill took over for the final two sections.

Vernon, R., Ford, J., Watkinson, K., Haslam, R., Woods, M., Farrant, A., Burke, H., Davis, A., Lear, J., Tarnanas, H. & Wrathmell, E. © UKRI All rights reserved Background • The Upper Cretaceous Chalk Group crops out across a significant area of southern and eastern England and extends offshore into the North Sea. • The Chalk is an important source of groundwater across England, however the different properties of the Chalk Group Formations and the effects of dissolution, karstification and faulting on groundwater flow are little understood. • In this project we have used a multidisciplinary approach to map a fault network from the North Sea which intersects one of the UK’s major aquifers and determine the importance of the fault network for groundwater flow within the region. • The Yorkshire Wolds is a region of low hills located east of York, between Scarborough and Hull, in northeast England, which is underlain by bedrock of the Chalk Group and are transected by two major fault zones. • The Chalk of the Yorkshire Wolds is a principal aquifer and the main source of water supply in East Yorkshire. The aquifer and associated groundwater system is directly influenced by the properties and distribution of the Chalk formations, faulting and superficial deposits that locally conceal the Chalk. • Current geological datasets for the region are based on historical mapping and do not reflect modern geological understanding, or consider more recent surface and subsurface data. • To rectify this a collaborative geological study between BGS and the Chalk Group Environment Agency has integrated a wide range of surface and subsurface data, literature and direct field evidence to create a revised geological interpretation for the northeastern Yorkshire Wolds, including the DEM from NEXTMap Britain elevation data from Intermap Technologies ©NEXTMap®.

    A 6.5 mile (10.5km) circular walk from VISIT RYEDALE Malton rail station in the market town of Norton-on-Derwent in Ryedale. NORTON AND MENETHORPE IMPORTANT NOTE: Please read the full access information below, as there are some circumstances in which this walk will be impassable or not recommended. The route heads south-west, through sheep pastures, Challenging Terrain horse paddocks and the golf course to reach the tiny hamlet of Menethorpe before returning through fields and cattle pastures alongside the River Derwent.
