Mysore Tourist attractions Mysore is the second largest city in the state of Karnataka, India. The name Mysore is an anglicised version of Mahishǌru, which means the abode of Mahisha. Mahisha stands for Mahishasura, a demon from the Hindu mythology. The city is spread across an area of 128.42 km² (50 sq mi) and is situated at the base of the Chamundi Hills. Mysore Palace : is a palace situated in the city. It was the official residence of the former royal family of Mysore, and also housed the durbar (royal offices).The term "Palace of Mysore" specifically refers to one of these palaces, Amba Vilas. Brindavan Gardens is a show garden that has a beautiful botanical park, full of exciting fountains, as well as boat rides beneath the dam. Diwans of Mysore planned and built the gardens in connection with the construction of the dam. Display items include a musical fountain. Various biological research departments are housed here. There is a guest house for tourists.It is situated at Krishna Raja Sagara (KRS) dam. Jaganmohan Palace : was built in the year 1861 by Krishnaraja Wodeyar III in a predominantly Hindu style to serve as an alternate palace for the royal family. This palace housed the royal family when the older Mysore Palace was burnt down by a fire. The palace has three floors and has stained glass shutters and ventilators. It has housed the Sri Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery since the year 1915. The collections exhibited here include paintings from the famed Travancore ruler, Raja Ravi Varma, the Russian painter Svetoslav Roerich and many paintings of the Mysore painting style.

ORIGINAL ARTICLE ISSN:-2231-5063 Golden Research Thoughts BRITISH IN THE WALLAJAH - MYSORE STRUGGLE FOR TIRUCHIRAPPALLI Abstract:- Mohammad Ali, the Nawab of Arcot had sought the alliance of Mysore against Chanda Sahib on condition that he would cede Tiruchirappalli to Mysore if he succeeded in the conflict. But Mohammed Ali flagrantly violated his solemn assurance and refused the cession of Tiruchirappalli to Mysore. However, Srirangam was left to be occupied by the Mysorean. In 1752, there ensued a struggle between the two groups of native power over the region of Tiruchirappalli. The British involved in the struggle in favour of Mohammed Ali to drive away the Mysoreans form the soil of the Tiruchirappalli. Mohammed Ali at first told the Mysore Rajah that he would consider the Rajah's demand after two months. When the Mysore King, Nanja Rajah pressed, Mohammed Ali said that the territory belonged to the Mughals and he could not alienate the Mughal's property. He was supported by the British and the native powers of Pudukkottai and Tanjore. On the other hand, the Mysore king got the assistance of Murari Rao, the Maratha Chief, the French and the Maravars. Eventually in the Wallajah - Mysore conflict over Tiruchirappalli region, the cause of the Nawab’s was won with the military aid and assistance of the British. However the growing influence of the British in Tiruchirappalli region eroded the power of the Nawab Wallajah there. The introduction of assignment and assumption brought the Tiruchirappalli region under S. Nalina the direct control of the British. The water falls created by the rivers are a feast to the eyes of the outlookers. Historical bakground: Karnataka is a land with rich historical past. It has many pre-historic sites and most of them are in the river valleys. The pre-historic culture of Karnataka is quite distinct from the pre- historic culture of North India, which may be compared with that existed in Africa. 1 Parts of Karnataka were subject to the rule of the Nandas, Mauryas and the Shatavahanas; Chandragupta Maurya (either Chandragupta I or Sannati Chandragupta Asoka’s grandson) is believed to have visited Sravanabelagola and spent his last years in this place.

Memorial to B.P. Radhakrishna (1918–2012) RASOUL SORKHABI University of Utah, Energy and Geoscience Institute, Salt Lake City, Utah 84108, USA Bangalore Puttaiya Radhakrishna, known affection- ately to his friends and colleagues as BPR, an eminent Indian geologist and an honorary fellow of the Geological Society of America, died in his hometown of Bangalore, southern India, on 26 January 2012 at age 94. BPR was born on 30 April 1918 in Bangalore in Karnataka State. He was the third of the six sons of Shreemati (Mrs.) Venkamma and Shri (Mr.) Bangalore Puttaiah, a noted Indian journalist and superintendent of Mysore State’s book printing. BPR grew up in Bangalore and studied at Fort High School, close to his residence district of Chamarajpet. He obtained his bachelor of science (honors) degree from Central College in 1937 with a gold medal for first in his class. His interest in geology was triggered at an early age by reading geology books, especially Archibald Geikie’s Founders of Geology, in his father’s library (his father was a geology graduate). Indeed, BPR was influenced by his father’s intellectual interests and later wrote his biography Nanna Thande (“My Father,” 1949) in his mother tongue of Kannada. Soon after his graduation, BPR joined the Mysore Geological Department (now called the Department of Mines and Geology of Karnataka State), which was established in 1894. The huge library and renowned geologists of the Mysore Geological Department along with the rich mineral resources and geologically fascinating landscape of Karnataka inspired BPR to excel in understanding the Precambrian geology and natural resources of his home state.
