Gen. Errol R. Schwartz Commanding General, DC National Guard I would like to welcome you all to this year’s Awards and Dec- orations Ceremony at the DC National Guard Armory. For our distinguished guests, this ceremony is one of our long-standing traditions where we recognize those Soldiers, Airmen, civilians, volunteers and youth who have made above and beyond contri- butions to their organizations and the DC National Guard Mis- sion. In honor of our history and military tradition, this ceremo- ny will also include our 257th Army Band, joint color guard and ceremonial marching elements from the DC Army and Air Na- tional Guard. We hope you enjoy the sights and sounds. The theme of this year’s ceremony is, “Through Diversity, We Triumph.” The DC National Guard boasts one of the most di- verse missions in the Defense Department. As we celebrate to- day, someone, at installations both here and around the world, is wearing the DC flag in defense of the nation. As the District’s first military responders, we stand ready to support our local and federal partners during National Special Security Events and emergency situations. As we continue to be an elite military organization and the premiere National Guard unit amongst the 50 states, 3 territories and the District of Columbia, we must continue to leverage our diverse talent pool of per- sonnel. Diversity goes beyond race, gender, age, religion or orientation. Diversity centers on innovation, and the unique skills, capabilities and professional acumen we all bring from our life’s journeys, to accomplish the common mission, and achieve the common goal. Today is just one of the few opportunities where we, as the Capital Guardians, come together to celebrate our triumph through diversity. As we reflect on the accomplish- ments of 2016 and transition into 2017, our commitment to diversity must be unwavering. We welcome back and congratulate our Soldiers and Airmen who have returned from deployments, and we salute and pray for those who are currently serving overseas, and away from their loved ones during the holi- day season. Additionally, we honor the memory of the Capital Guardians who we lost this year. Please keep them and their families in your thoughts and prayers. On behalf of my family and the command staff, may the holiday season be a treasured time for you and your family. Please be safe, responsible and vigilant in all of your activities. I look forward to serving alongside you in 2017. 3 AWARDS AND RECIPIENTS Major General Cunningham C. Bryant Leadership Award (Army) COL Victor A.
