alPHa Sections: Re: Bill 9, Ending Coal for Cleaner Air Act, 2014

Boards of Health On behalf of member Medical Officers of Health, Boards of Health and Affiliate organizations of Section the Association of Local Public Health Agencies (alPHa), I am writing today in support of the Council of Ontario elimination of coal-fired power generation in Ontario. Medical Officers of Health (COMOH) The significant health impacts of poor air quality have long been known, and have been the subject of a number reports on the subject. The Canadian Medical Association for example projected in its 2008 report, No Breathing Room - National Illness Costs of Air Pollution that in Affiliate 2015, more than 1400 Ontarians would die prematurely and Ontario would incur over $4 billion Organizations: in economic damages due to air pollution (pp. 27-28).

ANDSOOHA - Public Health Nursing We therefore strongly supported the 2007 decision to shut down Ontario’s coal-fired electricity Management plants by the end of 2014, and we strongly support the additional provisions in Bill 9 that will ensure that new coal-fired facilities are not built to replace them. We agree with the Premier’s Association of Ontario observation that the permanent elimination of coal-fired power in Ontario will build on the Public Health Business progress we have already made in protecting our environment, our health and the air that we Administrators breathe.

Association of We congratulate the Government for the actions it has taken to address the health, Public Health Epidemiologists environmental and economic impacts of coal-fired electricity and we urge all Ontario MPPs to in Ontario support Bill 9.
