After broadening my skill set at Northwestern, I wanted a city where I could continue to direct a broad range of projects and not be confined to one style – and I’m finding that. I’ve worked and studied all over the northern hemisphere and I can tell you that American theatre is lacking a PNW voice. I would like to see that change, and I want to be that change. We are a weird region surrounded by terrifying beauty. David Lynch understood that when he placed Twin Peaks here. I want to explore our voice in American theatre.

I know work by female and non-binary playwrights is very important to you. How do you hope to bring more female playwrights to Seattle stages? I was awarded a Spark Grant by the Greater Tacoma Foundation this summer, so myself and Ana Maria Campoy will be bringing a semi-staged reading of Tanya Saracho’s bilingual play Fade on a three-venue tour of Tacoma this fall.

6 ENCORE STAGES STG at a Glance More Music @ The Moore

One of STG’s core values is to inspire youth and local artists through training and performance opportunities, which is why we are so thrilled for what’s sure to be another phenomenal year of STG’s More Music @ The Moore. This program provides young artists training and rehearsal time with professional and peer musicians, as well as production and promotional support, with two culminating performances at the historic Moore Theatre on March 16, 2018.

In addition to the strong relationships STG has been able to build locally through More Music @ The Moore, we are also proud of the support from the international arts community that this program has garnered. Over the 17 years of the program, young artists have performed with The Roots, Elvis Costello, Robert Glasper, Sheila E., Mike McCready, Jon Batiste and Stay Human, Meshell Ndegeocello, Michael Shrieve, Alan White, and more!

STG is currently seeking exceptional musicians ages 14-21 to audition for this year’s program, which selects bands/ensembles/soloists to receive music industry inside training with locally-based mentors, as well as the opportunity to work direct and perform with an internationally-renowned music director. All music genres and cultures are welcome and those interested in a music career with original compositions are especially encouraged to audition.

Auditions will be held at The Vera Project on January 8-10, 2018. The deadline to sign up is December 29, 2017.

encoremediagroup.com/programs A-1 THE PARAMOUNT Manheim Steamroller NOVEMBER 25 MANNHEIM STEAMROLLER AMERICA’S FAVORITE HOLIDAY TRADITION!

In 1984 Mannheim Steamroller released Mannheim Steamroller Christmas, an album that revolutionized the holiday music industry. Already a multi-platinum recording artist through its Fresh Aire series, founder Chip Davis decided to record an album of Christmas music combining the group’s signature mix of renaissance instruments with rock & roll beats.

The resulting album was a runaway hit and propelled Mannheim Steamroller to become the #1 Christmas music artist in history. The group’s annual Christmas tour, now in its 33rd year, has become a holiday tradition alo

Mannheim Steamroller Live is the group’s most recent album. It celebrates more than 30 years of Christmas favorites and over 40 years of innovative Fresh Aire music.ng with decorating the tree, exchanging presents and spending time with friends and family. www.mannheimsteamroller.com

About Chip Davis: Visionary, Creator, Arranger and Producer

Chip Davis is the genius behind Mannheim Steamroller and the driving force of American Gramaphone, the largest independent record label in the country. His now-classic Fresh Aire series and unmatched Christmas album sales have brought him international renown. Chip combines the dynamics of musical mastery and technical wizardry to create a style often described as “18th Century Rock-n-Roll.” He named the band Mannheim Steamroller for the 18th century musical technique that we know today as the crescendo.

While Chip is no longer able to perform as a member of the band due to cervical disc damage, he continues to have 100 percent involvement in the Christmas concerts including creative and production direction of the entire tour. Between the two bands Mannheim Steamroller is bringing their renowned holiday tradition to 70 cities for 88 performances this year.

With 19 gold, 8 multi-platinum and 4 platinum certified records, Chip is among an elite group of artists as U2, Jay-Z, The Beach Boys and Michael Jackson with the most such certifications among all recording artists.

Chip resides on a 150-acre farm just outside Omaha, Ne. along with his nine horses, pet turkey, two timberwolves, a family of ducks and other natural critters throughout his woods. His three children all have a variety of musical talents. His 18-year old daughter is a lead singer in an Omaha band and is featured on the Mannheim Steamroller LIVE album. His 26-year old daughter is a special performance vocalist and competitive equestrian while also working at American Gramaphone. Chip’s 21-year old son, an accomplished guitarist, has performed on record tracks.

A-10 SEATTLE THEATRE GROUP STG at a Glance Historic Theatres Library As the steward of three historic theatres, STG places great emphasis on protecting the rich history of the Paramount, Moore and Neptune Theatres and the countless, diverse performances that have taken place on their stages. Because of this, STG created the Seattle Theatre Group Historic Theatres Library. Located on the fourth floor of the Paramount Theatre Office Tower adjacent to the theatre, the STG Historic Theaters Library is free and open to the public every Tuesday and Thursday from 10am to 3pm, as well as during all public and student tours of the Paramount.

The Library first opened its doors to the public on March 1, 2012, though the project began early in December 2010. It required the gathering, sorting, documenting, cataloging, and preserving of over 100 years of historical data. With tens of thousands of volunteer hours to date, this continues to be an on-going project.

The objective of STG’s Historic Theatres Library is three-fold: • To ensure historical material that exists of the three theatres is properly preserved and documented for future generations. • To provide an educational environment for youth that would offer an opportunity to learn and experience the remarkable history of the three theatres. • To offer the community a setting in which to become better acquainted with the history and thereby develop a deeper understanding of three of the few remaining historic theatres in Seattle.

Managed by our long-term volunteers, The Thrashers, and aided by several other dedicated volunteers, the library’s collection includes: materials about the performers that graced the stages over the many decades, documents depicting the peaks and valleys that these theatres had to endure, information on the visionaries responsible for these theatres, priceless memorabilia, and countless signed posters, among other historical resources.

The collection’s contents are searchable by and accessible to everyone, both at the library location in the Paramount building and on STG’s website. For more information about the Library and its services, please visit stgpresents.org/library.

Samie Spring Detzer Photo courtesy of WET.

Samie Spring Detzer is a true Seattleite. She grew up just north of the city and moved here to attend Cornish College of the Arts where she graduated with a BFA in theatre and original works. She’s the Artistic Director of Washington Ensemble Theatre, 35 but always identifies as an actor first, theatre administrator second. She joined the ensemble of WET six years ago and has performed in at least one show a season ever since. This season, she’ll be directing Monstrosity by Lucy Thurber – a co-production between the University of Washington and WET. We had the pleasure of talking to her about WET’s fourteenth season, being an artist in Seattle, and what makes her “an opinionated, loud-mouthed, head-bitch-in-charge” – in everything she does.

You’ve got an incredible season lined up polarizing pieces, and in some ways for Washington Ensemble Theatre. encoremediagroup.com/programs 9 What excites you most about being an artist in Seattle?

The truth is I’m afraid most of what I love about being a Seattle artist is MOZART’S slowly getting priced out, modified, and gentrified, to the point that much COMEDY of the city feels different to me. I do love this place and I’d be lying if I didn’t say what excites me most is that I’m ABOUT SEX holding out until the bubble bursts and we get to be a small-town big-city again. In the meantime, the food is good, the così fan tutte outdoors are beautiful and it’s given me and many other folks a place to be an jan 13-27, 2018 artist.

How do you hope to grow and challenge the theatre community here in Seattle?

I hope that WET will continue to expand Seattle’s notion of “a well-made play.” I find Aristotelian-centric theater tired. I prefer an epic slow burn or a firecracker. Surprise me, challenge me, indict me, but never bore me, please! I also think WET, like a few other companies here, has begun to really embrace using politics, equity and social justice to strengthen the art. More of that, please.

Are there any musicians, dancers, or theatre artists that you’re especially excited about this season? Who are you excited to see?

There are so many awesome artists working on this season. We have Sara Porkalob, Jennifer Zeyl, and Frank Boyd all working on Young Jean Lee’s Straight White Men. Then we’ll end with ensemble member Bobbin Ramsey directing on The Nether, which will blow your mind. There are so many amazing LET THE GAMES BEGIN!
