After broadening my skill set at Northwestern, I wanted a city where I could continue to direct a broad range of projects and not be confined to one style – and I’m finding that. I’ve worked and studied all over the northern hemisphere and I can tell you that American theatre is lacking a PNW voice. I would like to see that change, and I want to be that change. We are a weird region surrounded by terrifying beauty. David Lynch understood that when he placed Twin Peaks here. I want to explore our voice in American theatre. I know work by female and non-binary playwrights is very important to you. How do you hope to bring more female playwrights to Seattle stages? I was awarded a Spark Grant by the Greater Tacoma Foundation this summer, so myself and Ana Maria Campoy will be bringing a semi-staged reading of Tanya Saracho’s bilingual play Fade on a three-venue tour of Tacoma this fall. “I can tell you that American theatre is lacking a PNW voice. This program provides young artists training and rehearsal time with professional and peer musicians, as well as production and promotional support, with two culminating performances at the historic Moore Theatre on March 16, 2018. In addition to the strong relationships STG has been able to build locally through More Music @ The Moore, we are also proud of the support from the international arts community that this program has garnered. Over the 17 years of the program, young artists have performed with The Roots, Elvis Costello, Robert Glasper, Sheila E., Mike McCready, Jon Batiste and Stay Human, Meshell Ndegeocello, Michael Shrieve, Alan White, and more! STG is currently seeking exceptional musicians ages 14-21 to audition for this year’s program, which selects bands/ensembles/soloists to receive music industry inside training with locally-based mentors, as well as the opportunity to work direct and perform with an internationally-renowned music director. All music genres and cultures are welcome and those interested in a music career with original compositions are especially encouraged to audition. Auditions will be held at The Vera Project on January 8-10, 2018. The deadline to sign up is December 29, 2017. THIS IS WHAT NIRVANA SINGER-GUITARIST KURT Cobain thought of institutional honors in rock & roll: When his band was photographed for the cover of Rolling Stone for the first time, in early 1992, he arrived wearing a white T-shirt on which he’d written, c o r p o r a t e m a g a z i n e s s t i l l s u c k in black marker. The slogan was his twist on one coined by the punk-rock label SST: “Corporate Rock Still Sucks.” The hastily arranged photo session, held by the side of a road during a manic tour of Australia, was later recalled by photogra­ pher Mark Seliger: “I said to Kurt, T think that’s a great shirt... but let’s shoot a couple with and without it.’ Kurt said, ‘No, I’m not going to take my shirt off.’” Rolling Stone ran his Fuck You un-retouched. ^ Cobain was also mocking his own success. Yet, not surprisingly, the main focus of the book is the period from the early eighties onwards. The U Men, Green River, Malfunkshun, MLB, Tad, Nirvana. Lubricated Goat! They're all here, and more bands besides. And not just bands. Loser is packed with stories, quotes and information on clubs, record labels and anyone who is anyone in Seattle. Of course no real Seattle music story would be complete without Soundgarden. While the dedicated fan may not learn anything new about the band from Loser , there are quotes, photos and repros of posters for early shows (on which the band is often erroneously referred to as Sound Garden). And, as an influential figure on the scene - first as a promoter, then as a manager - Susan Silver merits several mentions. Refreshingly, the fact that she happens to be married to Chris Cornell is barely touched upon. Loser has a distinct fanzine feel to it - all the pictures (including posters, fanzine covers and record sleeves) are black and white; many of them thumbnails - and look like they were photocopied several times before they reached the printer. But that all adds to the book's charm. Loser is published by Feral House (1995), 227 fascinating pages long and retails in the UK for about twelve pounds.
