(Sam Kean, American Author) With forensic DNA analysis widely regarded as the ‘golden standard’ of forensic evidence, case investigations and criminal cases have shown that genetic genealogy is pivotal in discovering who the perpetrator is. Through the interpretation of DNA testing and its new adaptation of credibility towards case investigations, it will lead to the establishment of what genetic genealogy is and how it has made an impact in the progressions of forensic evidence. To propose a hypothetical situation where genetic genealogy does not exist, one can examine the impacts on individuals in society and in investigation. Understanding genetic genealogy is key in ensuring that further advancements take place in the novel field of forensic science, as it concerns the nature of DNA analysis, from the many fallibilities of processing to the standardization practices across all laboratories. The importance of forensic genetics will be distinguished through a hypothetical universe inexistent of genetic genealogy prior to the Golden State Killer (GSK) case. The absence of genetic genealogy will be used to highlight the divergence in an alternate timeline to then unravel the major impacts it would further have on the GSK case. Abstract: Genetic information is widely thought to pose unique risks of re-identifying individuals. Genetic data reveals a great deal about who we are, and, the standard view holds, should consequently be treated differently from other types of data. Contrary to this view, we argue that the dangers of re-identification for genetic and non-genetic data—including health, financial, and consumer information—are more similar than has been recognized. Before we impose different requirements on sharing genetic information, proponents of the standard view must show that they are in fact necessary. We further argue that the similarities between genetic and non-genetic information have important implications for communicating risks during consent for healthcare and research. While patients and research participants need to be more aware of pervasive data sharing practices, consent forms are the wrong place to provide this education. Instead, health systems should engage with patients throughout patient care to educate about data sharing practices. In Indiana, DNA profiles obtained from the following categories can be entered into CODIS by the Indianapolis Marion County Forensic Services Agency: crime scene evidence, missing persons and unidentified human remains. The purpose of the database is to generate investigative leads. Not all cases are considered CODIS eligible. CODIS is maintained at the national level by the Federal Bureau of Investigation which has requirements to determine the eligibility of a DNA profile for CODIS entry. A continued “life of crime” or the high incidence of recidivism in criminals is the concept upon which the DNA database program is based. If a convicted offender’s profile matches crime scene evidence, this can identify a potential suspect(s). The database can also link multiple unsolved crimes to identify serial offenses and connect agencies who can then work together in the investigation. Finally, CODIS can be used to identify human remains by matching them to missing persons or to their biological relatives. To maximize the value of this program, biological evidence from unsolved crimes and missing persons cases must be analyzed and the DNA profile developed is entered into CODIS. I. NO SUSPECT/UNSOLVED CASES A. All unsolved cases with potential probative DNA qualifying case evidence, including those with no suspects, should be submitted to the Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency (IMCFSA) for analysis. -

However, his head was never located, baffling the FBI and other investigators for years. They could only establish that he was of European descent, with reddish-brown hair, and was about 40-years-old at the time of death. His arms, hand, and legs were found in 1991. Over the years, investigators enlisted the help of Idaho State University and its team of forensic genetic genealogists (anthropology students and staffers). This also included experts from the Smithsonian Institution and the FBI. Last year investigators further enlisted the help of the DNA Doe Project, hoping to use DNA and ancestral analysis to identify the man. Experts from Othram, a forensic DNA analysis company, analyzed samples taken from the remains, while a forensic genealogist from the DNA Doe Project worked with her colleagues to build a ‘genealogical tree’. The man’s DNA profile was then uploaded to various genetic genealogy DNA databases for relatives. This led to the man’s living 87-year-old grandson, whose sample was taken and tested to confirm a familial relationship. -
