RAISING THE LEVEL OF CANCER CARE IN MONROE COUNTY. The Perryman Keglovits Foundation 2019 All-Star Games

In 2003, an All Star Basketball Game was born in memory of both Al Keglovits and Arthur Perryman. It’s hard to believe that it is already the games seventeeth year!

With the help of so many people over the past seventeen years this local senior boys and girls senior showcase has grown into a memorable community affair. This night is not just a basketball game for our senior All-Stars but also a night to remember all those in the community who have lost their battle with cancer and to encourage those who continue their fi ght.

Cancer is the number one leading cause of death in Monroe County.

The vision of this all-star game was not only to give our senior all-stars one last chance to play in front of their families and friends, but also to honor two Monroe County Basketball Legends who lost their lives to cancer. Proceeds from the event support both the “Dale and Frances Hughes Cancer Center”, the Jimmy V Foundation and Joey’s Eagles. The community can truly be proud of the support they provide to these worthy causes.

One of the event’s guest speakers once said, “I urge all who are battling cancer, be it a personal battle or one for someone you love to take time to educate yourselves on the warning signs of cancer. Don’t ignore the opportunity for a long and healthy life”.

A special thanks to all who have made this game evening possible. We could not have done it without the support of community, friends, school districts, and sponsors.

Sincerely, Board of Directors

Serving as the heartbeat of The V Foundation for Cancer Research, formed by ESPN and Jim in 1993, his words throughout the ESPY speech have never been more meaningful. After being diagnosed with cancer at the young age of 46, Jim dreamed of finding cures for cancer. Passionate and committed, he wanted to see his fight through to victory. As a former coach, he began to recruit his team of family and friends to lead the Foundation in his quest to eradicate the disease. As a cancer patient, Jim recognized the need to invest in young physician/scientists to help establish their careers — after all, someone had invested in him early in his career! Addressing the need to help early-career cancer investigators develop into promising future research talents was the first goal of the Foundation. The V Scholar concept was developed in 1994 to address that need. Today, this highly respected award is eagerly sought by young physician/scientists at the nation’s leading cancer centers. As with any patient, Jim discovered first-hand how slowly science progresses from the lab to the patient’s bedside. He wanted faster solutions, more progress and better answers. Eight years after his death, The V Foundation announced its Translational Research Grants, designed to accelerate laboratory findings with the goal of benefiting patients more quickly. Although Jim lost his battle with cancer less than two months after delivering the ESPY speech, his dream of a cure lives on through research grants bestowed in his name. The V Foundation has awarded more than $170 million to more than 120 facilities nationwide and proudly awards 100% of direct donations and net event proceeds to cancer research. A relatively young organization, The V Foundation has a strong presence in the scientific community. The Foundation is guided by an elite, all-volunteer Scientific Advisory Board who recommends the research projects funded. This Board is comprised of top physicians and research scientists from prominent universities and cancer centers throughout the country. Working with this team of talented professionals, we are proud to carry out Jim’s vision for the future. Jim’s dream of finding a cure for cancer is one shared by millions. Although we have not yet achieved this goal, every day we get a little bit closer and will continue to honor his inspiring words, “Don’t Give Up . . . Don’t Ever Give Up!” ®

4 Remembering Al and Art

Al Keglovits – Al Keglovits was a father, a husband, a teacher, a coach, a bartender, a comedian, a New York Yankees fan, a golfer, and a friend to all who knew him. Fighting Cancer, seeing how he fought it was an inspiration to all of us. Al Keglovits was one of those guys who had a dynamic personality. Kids, colleagues and all opponents were drawn towards his magnetic charm… Al drew you closer to him. He knew he had a fight on his hands when he was diagnosed with cancer. He fought it right up to the end. He never, never quit. Unfortunately he couldn’t rally one more time. What is important is what the Man, Al Keglovits, did with his life. The example set was one of courage. He loved his Family, he loved his Friends and he loved Basketball. Coaching and teaching were instinctive for Keglovits. He will be remembered by all his players, friends, those he toasted life to. Coach Keglovits will always be remembered for his tremendous ever-so-dry sense of humor. He was one of those guys you always wanted to be around. Al made you feel comfortable but watch out for the next zinger, it was probably going to be aimed at you. Among all of his positive traits, Al Keglovits will be most remembered for his battling the cancer that took him away from his family, his friends, his basketball team and us all.

Arthur Perryman – Artie was a son and brother who was loyal and passionate toward his family and friends. Basketball was the passion shared by all in his family but it was Artie who enjoyed it most. His love for the game was obvious to all; however, it was the glue to the friendships he made among his teammates. He was a great teammate, willing to sacrifice his own individual accolades for the betterment of the team. He accrued four basketball letters over his career also earning the Most Valuable Player awards during 1992, 1993 and 1994. In 1994, Artie led his team to a District 11 AAAA title along with two wins in the PIAA state playoffs, scoring 30 points vs. Reading, 33 vs. Coatesville and 22 vs. eventual State Champion Chester. Sportswriters and coaches statewide rewarded him, with his being named to the Third Team “Big School” All-State Team in 1994. Sadly, Artie succumbed to cancer at the tender age of 19. He will be remembered most for his competitive nature, his infectious sense of humor and his ability to make people smile.

57 The Perryman Keglovits Foundation board of directors would like to say a “special thank you,” to all that made these All- Star games possible. We couldn't have done it with out your help. Thanks a million to:

I would like to take this time to thank everyone who has helped, and continues to help put together the Perryman Keglovits All Star Game. I have been blessed to be a part of this special event for the last 10 years as a boy’s basketball coach, as a girl’s basketball coach, and as a marketing assistant. During this time I have had the opportunity to witness how this event brings together the coaches and athletes from what we once called the “Mountain Valley area”. While it may serve as a way to heighten rivalries, this event has also been responsible for building strong friendships between our neighboring schools. Due to this opportunity, I have had the honor of working alongside a number of great coaches, such as Adam Cole, Matt Fields, Nadia Gauronsky, and Stacy Perryman, to name a few, and to meet a lot of players who have made an impact on the game in our area, and even at the college level for some. More importantly, the Perryman Keglovits All Star Game also serves as a platform to raise awareness for the ongoing fight against cancer. I lost my grandmother, Patricia Hay- den and my great-grandmother, Louise Jackson to cancer, so being a part of this event gives me a chance to honor them as we raise money to help find a cure. In its 17th year of bringing everyone together for a great cause, the Perryman Keglovits All Star Game has become a staple in our community. Al, You were there for Us!

We will always be there for you! 8 Forever Photography Capturing memories that last a lifetime

In 2003, Rich and Sharon Laverdure, along with Robert Madsen, approached me and my family in regards to starting an all-star game in Arthur’s name for local seniors to showcase their talents in one last event prior to the end of a great high school basketball career. Involuntarily we were touched to have Arthur’s name on such an event that would represent integrity, hard work and perseverance. What we did not realize is the affect it would continue to have on our family five years later.

Arthur left us way too early on April 21, 1995. When we say “us” we include all of the lives in which Art touched during his 19 years of life. During my family’s mourning, we were utterly supported by the community in every way possible. Truly there was not a day that passed in which someone did not reach out to offer an ear to listen, to share a personal story they had with Art or to just simply say how sorry they were for our loss. Over the years, our appreciation for our community has strengthened and words cannot express enough our gratitude for the continuous support in keeping Arthur’s memory, along with Al’s, and legacy alive through this prestigious event.

This All-Star game is a way for us to continue to share a commonality among our community remembering and honoring the life of Arthur Perryman III. What Art has contributed with his great talent on the basketball court along with his savvy personality will never be forgotten to those who have known him personally or simply just enjoyed watching his Jordanesque glide to the basket or shot well beyond the three point line. Who could ever forget that infamous headband in which he wore? Partly, I believe he wore it so that we, as fans, could tell him and Mike Long apart. And naturally he wore #31, the same number is favorite sister wore during her playing career, but Felicia and Chrissy may have something to say about that. But, whatever the reason, he left an impression on a diverse people in such a short span of life.

So, what does this game mean to the Perryman family? It means that our family along with the community has an annual opportunity to recollect on the life of Artie in an arena in which he loved most – the basketball court. My family and I are so appreciative for the many efforts that go into this game each year to improve its quality and for those who continue to support the cause. Artie is definitely looking down on us and proud of what we came together as a community to accomplish in his name. We sincerely thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Stacy Perryman

10 A Letter from Christopher Kross My daughter, Brittany Kross, was diagnosed with cancer (Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia - ALL) when she was six years old and just getting ready to start first grade in 1993. She had not been acting like a nor- mal kid and was instead tired a lot and had fevers off and on. We thought maybe she had Lyme disease, but after a blood test, the doctor’s words were devastating. My wife Lisa and I were in shock after the doctor said to get to a children’s hospital right away for further testing, telling us he feared she may have cancer. Brittany had no idea what cancer really meant or how it would affect her for years to come. Death was not on her mind, but that was all we could think of. After more testing and meeting with doctors at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, the diagnosis was confirmed. Hearing a doctor tell you your child may still die of the disease even if she started chemotherapy immediately was too much to bear. Back then the cure rate for children with ALL was somewhere around 66%. Thinking about the 33% was so hard not to do. Brittany started intensive chemotherapy right away. Within a From top: couple of weeks we were getting the last haircut she would need Diagnosis in the hospital at 6 yrs old. for a couple of years. Brittany was so strong and resilient. After about two months of chemotherapy we heard the words we had been praying to hear throughout. The doctor told us her cancer was “in remission.” It was such a relief to hear that, but Brittany would still need to continue her chemotherapy for the next two years. The periodic testing of Brittany’s blood work, and other testing, kept coming back with the cancer being in remission. Waiting for the test results was always stressful. Family, friends and faith kept us hopeful and positive throughout. The other gut wrenching part about watching someone fight cancer is seeing the side effects of chemotherapy. When it’s your child, you want to take all the pain away, but you know it’s also part of the recovery and cure. Brittany didn’t realize how amazing she was throughout this battle, but we all knew. She made it through two plus years of chemotherapy, and then three years of peri- odic testing. At the five-year mark they said we could consider Brittany cured. By this time she had been living a healthy and normal kid’s life with school, sports, and friends. Cancer was a number of things for Brittany and for our family and friends. It was a battle, an obstacle, a faith tester, a family bonding time, a time for reflection on what life is about, and a journey that helped make Brittany into the wonderful amazing person she is today.

In Loving Memory of Anita (Stefani) Kawka 1/11/1963-11/6/2002 Has anyone seen Anita Today? (This was read 17 years ago at her funeral) It’s the fi rst time I heard her name some 4 years ago. Anytime we needed to know what was going to ship, and needed to know right away someone would say… Has anyone seen Anita Today?

When she had a good story to tell, you could hear the laughter offi ces away, when she had a bad story to tell, you could hear the laughter miles away…. Has anyone seen Anita Today?

Then came the news, she was sick, but what and how bad no one knew. She lost her hair and a few other things were gone. People were speculating, there were whispers in the hall psssst hey… Has anyone seen Anita Today?

Then she was fi ne, her hair was back and curly, all was right in the world. She came in with her boys and everyone got out candy for them and said go ahead grab a lot it’s ok…. Has anyone seen Anita Today?

Then it came back, she was sick again, this time with fury and no relent. She kept coming to work and trying so hard not to let on that cancer was getting its way…. Has anyone seen Anita Today?

We visited, we called, but no one knew exactly what to do. Then the news, she died on 11/6/2002 at 2:00 in the morning. I wonder if her boys will ever know what kind of amazing friend, and woman she was in her special way….. I wish I could see Anita Today?

He scored over 1300 career points and close to 1000 rebounds. His leader- ship skills and scoring ability earned him recognition as a member of Nanticoke Area’s “Wall of Fame.” As a senior, he was awarded a Presidential Scholarship to Kings College in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. He went on to play for the Monarchs for the next 4 years while earning his teaching degree in secondary education math. He has taught AP Calculus at Pleasant Valley for 26 years. Ken served as the head varsity boy’s basketball coach at Pleasant Valley High School for 19 years, from 1995-2014. In his third year, he took home the 1998 District XI ‘AAAA’ gold and was named Morning Call, Pocono Record, and Times-News Coach of the Year. In 2003, he won Mountain Valley Conference gold when his team beat East Stroudsburg South in the rst season of the revamped conference. Always regarded as one of the most respected and knowledgeable coaches in the area, he routinely took undermanned teams to six dierent appearances in Mountain Valley Conference championship games and quali ed for the District XI playos 12 dierent times. His 19-year career record was 225-223. In 2015 Ken became the 7th/8th grade boy’s basketball coach at Pocono Mountain West, and in 2018 moved up to Varsity Assistant, where he remains. O the court there are a number of things that Ken spear-headed that people may not be aware of, according to colleagues and fellow former PV basketball coaches Steven Ayers and Dave Stefani. From 2009 to 2014 he organized Shoot for the Cure – a basketball tournament to help raise awareness and money for metastatic breast cancer research, in honor of Lucy Stanovick, a former coach and mom of two PV basketball players, Nick & Kate. Together with Lucy’s husband John, her kids, her family and our PV boys and girls players, thousands of dollars were raised. Ken continues to hold this fundraiser at Pocono Mountain West. He was instrumental in helping to get several of his players over the years into a better position to be accepted into college. He had one of his teams paint the home of a family in need for Habitat for Humanity. Lisa Neubert, his long-time booster club president, can remember many times trying to gure out how they were going to get this player or that one a decent pair of basketball shoes for the season, or rides to and from games, or even lunch money for the week. He would pay for these things out of his own pocket rather than see one of his players go without. Ken’s long-time friend and colleague Mark Allison said, “e committee couldn’t have made ner choice in Kenny. Coach Piontkowski was my freshman coach when I was the head coach at Pleasant Valley. He then took over the head coaching po- sition when I retired. Kenny has always been a hard working coach with a tremendous amount of basketball knowledge. Ken impressed me as a coach and as a person right from the very beginning. e thing that has always impressed me the most is how much Kenny cares about all of his kids and all the things he does for them. His players always loved him and played hard out of respect for him. Kenny works just as hard, cares just as much in the classroom as a teacher. He has always had great re- spect from his peers. Kenny has always been a class act and has the respect of everyone that knows basketball in this area. I am so proud of Kenny. When he took over as head coach at PV, he took basketball to greater heights, including a district champi- onship. He was the right man for the job. Kenny’s hard work and dedication is evident by all the work he does for the All Star game. He has done a great service to the players, coaches, and fans of basketball in this area. I am so happy Kenny is getting this award. He certainly deserves it. I look forward to seeing him get the award. He is a great coach, great friend, great teacher, and one of the nest people I know.” We heard these sentiments over and over from all the folks we spoke with while gathering our information and interviewing people. But who better to sum up what an impact Ken has made in basketball, as a coach and as a mentor, than former all star player, Pleasant Valley (and later Wilkes) boys basketball record holder, Tommy Kresge. “When I started out playing basketball I learned everything from my father, who coached me throughout grade school, but when I got to the high school level, my game elevated to a dierent level, and I owe that to Coach P for helping me grow in the game. His passion for the game was contagious and right from the start I gained immense respect for him and how he approached the game of basketball. He taught me that every practice is a chance to get better, and that even if you work hard, there is someone out there trying to work harder than you, and to never settle for anything. His competitiveness brought out the best in his players. I could talk about everything that involves Coach P and the game of basketball, but what I admired the most about him was his character. He’s a great guy and I’m proud to have experienced four years with him as my coach. If anyone deserves this award, it’s Coach P.” GAMEFACEGROOMING.COM

Cancer Can’t Stop A Legacy! Congratulations to all the athletes who have been chosen to represent their schools in the 17th An- nual Perryman Keglovits All-Star Games. A special thanks goes to the Laverdures and their sta for their hard work and dedication in helping to keep this wonderful and meaningful event alive. It is a special time when communities can come together, in friendship and comradery, to cele- brate two of their own who gave so much to us in their own special ways. My son, Josh, played in the rst All-Star game and I know what a great honor it was for him to represent his school, Pococno Mountain, and his family’s friend Al Keglovits. Both of them were passionate about the game and respected and loved their teams and the sense of family it instilled in them. ey were dedicated to doing things the right way. Al and Art were loyal to their family, friends, teammates, and coaches. is loyalty and devotion is evident today. What the Foundation Means to Michael Long

When Mr. Laverdure asked me to put my feelings down on paper about what the Perryman Keglovits Foundation meant to me as a father, I was hit with a range of emotions. I was honored, because the Perryman Keglovits Foundation is such a great movement and the game has become a staple in the community. Happy because I know the joy that this game has brought to so many kids, but then the sadness set in. I was sad I know the reason for this game and foundation is based on an ugly faceless dis- ease that not only robbed my brother of his life prematurely, stole Mr. Keglovits golden years, but also took the hopes and dreams of so many. But then I smiled from deep within my heart. I realized that even though cancer has stolen these great men from us, it can never touch the lega- cy they left behind. It can never disrupt the way these individuals touched so many lives directly and indirectly. What Mr. Laverdure and the rest of the foundation has done has made sure that not only did these men not pass in vain, he also made sure that their legacy will be remembered for decades to come and beyond. So beyond the countless lives the monies raised have effected, it turned something ugly into something honorable and beautiful. This year it’s a little bit more special due to the fact my son was selected to the team. While this has great meaning to all the kids, in my heart of hearts I know it’s a lot more special to my son. He never got to physically meet his uncle Art but he knows his story in and out and was greatly inspired by his uncle Arthur. As a father the joy I receive knowing that 24 years after his untimely passing, Art is still touching the soul of my children. Were it not for the Perryman Keglovits Foundation and Mr. Laverdure, who has always been like a father to Art and myself, none of this would be possible. So from the bottom of my heart I greatly appreciate and will always support what the Perryman Keglovits Foundation has done and stand for. I’m sure I speak for many in the community as well! Thank you for all that you’ve done.

Sincerely, Michael Long As someone who grew up and spent most of my life in East Stroudsburg, I am aware of the good service that the Perryman Keglovits Foun- dation does. Currently I’m working towards my PhD in biochemistry at Thomas Jefferson University in the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Cen- ter, where I study uveal melanoma, the most common eye cancer in adults. My research fo- cuses on finding potential means of treatment for this disease. Recently my collaborators and I tested whether a drug derived from the leaves of a Christmas berry plant, might be able to fight uveal mel- anoma. The drug, called FR, showed promise as a potential, future therapeutic. We treated three different types of uveal melanoma cells, which have cancer-promoting mutations, with FR and observed various positive effects. At low doses of FR, the cells appeared to revert from cancer cells back to their normal, non-cancerous state. At higher doses, FR stopped the cancer cells from growing and eventually killed them. Our results so far suggest that FR could be an effective drug used to treat uveal melano- ma. The next step is to test FR in a mouse model and hope that it can cure mice of the disease before moving onto clinical trials. -Dominic Lapadula When I was asked to play in the Ar- thur Perryman and Al Keglovits All Star game, I felt very honored. Having this game shows how much respect that you have towards the game, and towards these two very special people who played the game, and even taught us how to play the game of Basketball. Playing in this important game brings the seniors together for one last time, in one last high school game to recog- nize them before they go on to college and play ball. The game also brings out the community, showing them a good time and letting them enjoy a good and competitive game of basketball - both girl’s and boy’s games. The good thing that happened to me when playing in the all star game was that it gave me the opportunity to play on a college floor. The game itself gave me a lot of exposure, since a lot of colleges still recruit during the all star game. It was also a rare experience for players, because they would be on the same team as their competitors that they played against during the season and were trying to beat. I think that during the season you would hate those guys but had respect for them, but when playing in the all star game, and being on their team, you notice that you build a friendship with them and that they can be really nice. I also think that when the all star game comes around the corner, a lot of friendships accrue during the game, and it proceeds during it and after the game too. It was a nice wrap-up for your high school season because it was the last time you could go out as a senior and show them what you had before the game was over with. No matter what you do though, take a time to pause and thank everyone who helped you or made you into the person you are today, like your parents, coaches, friends or even teachers because without them you never know what would have happened. The most important thing about this game was that my brothers were looking up to me and watched how hard I play up and down the court for the last time in my high school career. I am the role model for my brothers Matt and Ryan, because as a big brother they always look up to me and see what I do right and what I do wrong, so that when they are put in that situation they know what to do and what not to do. I also have to set good examples so that when they get older they can grow up into fine like men like me. My role models when I was growing up were my parents, friends, teachers and my coaches. Last but not least, it gives all the underclassmen something to look forward to – playing in this game as a senior how to go out with a bang. -Joe Gahllegar
