Dear Participants,

We are very excited that you are taking part in the first European Meeting of the World Leadership Center - Mt. Herzl, that is taking place in partership with the ZWST and different Jewish communities inE urope. We are pleased to have this distinguished delegation from 10 countries around Europe. All of you are an integral part of the program. During the four intensive days of the seminar, you will learn a lot about the current and future situation in Europe, and you will learn a lot about your self. You will learn about your leadership style and will acquire personal skills to you develop as a leader. You will learn from your peers about the situation in other Jewish communities and establish a network of future- leaders. Lectures, workshops, peer presentations and tours are all part of this rich programme.

In these days, especially in the Jewish communities around Europe, it is imperative that we come together to stand up to the new challenges that face all of us. We need a strong and courageous leadership! We are sure that you will be enriched and enrich each other and your community with a stong connection to Jews around the world and especially to Israel.

I am from Istanbul/Turkey. I graduated from Koç University with a major in psychology. I completed my master’s degree in clinical psychology. I am a clinical psychologist working with children and adolescents who have emotional, social and academic problems. I conduct mostly individual therapies and family counseling with Turkish and international families. Besides my professional career, I am an active volunteer in the Jewish Community since 2004. I am a member of B’nai B’rith Istanbul where we organize different fund raising activities mostly for the education of Jewish children who are in need and develop projects that focus on creating social network among Jewish youth.

I graduated school in 2008 with an excellence medal. I entered Gomel State Francisk Skarina University to study in the faculty of economy, specialization “government management”. From 2013, I started to participate in different activities in Jewish community. In 2016, I took part in the Metsuda project, passed Paideia project incubator in Stockholm, and finished a “project manager” course from IBM. I also served as a “Madrich of Taglit” in Israel, and during the summer, I took my first birthright group.

I’m an economy and management student at Istanbul Bilgi University & at London School of Economics International Programmes. I had a swimming career for 10 years at Enka Swimming Club. During this time I won over 90 trophies. Beside my trophies, last year I entered the Inter Continental Swimming Race and swam the Bosphorus. I was working actively in Turkish Jewish Community and Jewish Youth Club Alef for 9 years and it was my second year as a member of executive committee for Alef. In Alef I’m giving Jewish culture peulas to children from different ages, organizing some events and seminars. In summer of 2015, I was the leader of a 10 day trip to Israel for 62 children.

My Name is Simon Beckmann and I’am 23 years old. I was Born in Gießen, Hessen. After I finished school I did a volunteere year in a childrens hospital.A fter that I started studing education sciences in Gießen. For many years I have been a madrich at the machanot from the ZWST and contribute in other jewish events in germany, like the Jewrovision. My hobbys are skateboarding, snowboarding and reading.

I was born in the last years of the Soviet Union. When I was 3 years old, my family moved to Israel. My father created the Israeli association of boxing and I spent several happy years in an atmosphere of love for children and interesting events, which is famous for Israel. Later we went back with my mother to Ukraine. In Kharkov, I graduated from the V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University with a master’s degree in economics. The last 6 years I have worked in an international Japanese company, Panasonic, as staff training specialist (trainer product) and the referent in the Caucasus, Moldova and Ukraine. From 2015, after a trip with Birthright, I became an active member of the Jewish life of the city.

I am Linda from Istanbul, Turkey. I am 33 years old. I graduated with a degree in International Relations. I have participated at the different departments of our community such as Talmud Torah, Annette Bat Mitsva Club and the youth clubs. For more than 10 years, I was a madricha in Bat Mitsva Club and for 5 years I have been working as coordinator of the club and leader of the madrichas.

My name is Reysi. I was born in 1996 in Istanbul and I’m studying industrial engineering at Özyeğin University right now. This is my second year in Annette Bat-Mitsvah Club. Before that, I was madricha in Talmud Tora. Right now I’m an AIESECer in İstanbul Asia. I volunteer in my university and in Turkish Jewish Community and am also working part time at administrative services of engineering faculty in my university.

I am 22 years old, an active member of Kharkiv Jewish Community since winter 2013. I was born in Kharkiv in 1994, in 2011 studied in USA at Homestead High School, as a senior. Then finished High School in Kharkiv. Now I am studying engineering at Ukrainian State University of Railway Transport. I am a leader in Kharkiv Jewish Community, working at Hillel, and supervising 2 social projects. I also worked as a madrich for TAGLIT, and a few childrens camps.

I am 29 years old, was born and raised in Istanbul/Turkey. I graduated from college in 2009 with a major in biology. I relized that I’m not a science person. I can do very well researching, but I should stay in contact with people. At the same time I started to work for Turkish Designers’ Association. After university life, I decided to design and manage the brands. After that, I stayed 6 months in New York to learn brand management in Parsons School. After six months, I transfer to Limango, which is the best German e-commerce shopping website in Turkey, as a developer and fashion management. Stayed there 2 years and then I realized again that I should create something for my own business, like an entrepreneur. Now, I am the founder of my fourth start-up company. They are different than the others’ sectors.

I was born in Dnepropetrovsk(today Dnipro),Ukraine. From 1995 till 2003, I was a student of the Jewish school in Dnipro, Ukraine /. My biggest achievments at school were: 2001 - 1st place of zeut jehudy Dnipro, 2002 - 2nd place zeut jehudy Ukraine. Since 2002, I was a madrich by local Sohnut(lehet 2002-03). Since 30.06.2003, I have been living in Germany, Nürnberg. In 2004, I founded, with help from local young jewish activists, a jewish youth club - Noar, which closed in 2006. For a long time, there were no opportunities for me to take an active part in Jewish life. My last jewish activities outside Nürnberg were a machane 18+ in Gatteo a Mare with Ilya Daboosh and Nachumi Rosenblatt and participation in Project Coaching #Young Adults in Berlin led by Viktorija Kopmane.

I am from Kiew, Ukraine, but I am living in Germany for more than 22 years. Since I was a child I was active in the Jewish community life in Chemnitz, mostly working with youth. Right after my Abitur I decided to study Business. Following my B.A. I continued to my Master degree specializing in Leadership, HRM, Innovation-Management and consulting. In the beginning auf 2016 I accomplished my master degree successfully. At the moment I am working with an insurance broker company as a consultant of the management. I hope this is sufficient for a first overview to my background.

My name is Miriam Marhöfer and I am holding a diploma in social work. Currently, I am working as team manager in a children’s home in Mannheim – the city I’m also living in. As head of the youth center or Madricha, I’ve always been an active member of the Jewish community of Mannheim. It is very dear to my heart to empower the Jewish life as well as to live Jewish values and traditions. Out of this motivation, I am currently taking part in a training activity for consulting victims of anti-Semitism, discrimination and racism in Berlin. In my spare time I love to travel, to cook and to spend time with my family and friends.

Semih Mayorkas was born in İstanbul, Turkey in 1993. He is the unique child of a Sephardic Jewish family. After the divorcement of his parents, Semih has been staying with his mother. He is still continuing his studies in university. His first objective after graduation is to work in private sector with his various experiences on marketing and graphics design by using the principles of engineering. Aiming to improve and to find new customers to various businesses which are developed or still developing, by using his entrepreneurial skills.

Hi, My name is Miriam Mosesson, I am 20 years old and was born and raised in Stockholm, Sweden. Judaism has always been very central in my life. I went to a Jewish day school up to ninth grade and during high school I was involved in youth organizations such as Bnei Akiva and other activities and camp etc. After graduating high school, I went to Israel for a year on a masa-program called Young Judaea/FZY Year Course, an incredible year which gave me a stronger connection to both Israel and Judaism. After coming back to Sweden from Israel, I decided to work in the Jewish kindergarten and later on traveled in Central America. Since September first, I work for the Jewish community in Stockholm as the youth coordinator, a challenging but very exciting job. I also study rhetoric in Södertörn University in south Stockholm.

Avital Nadbornik // Finland // [email protected]

Avital Nadbornik currently lives in Helsinki, Finland with her husband and their 3 children. Avital is a stay-at-home mom. She has studied communications and social sciences and is now doing a professional degree in graphic design. Before moving to Finland, the couple lived in Vilnius, Lithuania were her husband worked with the local Jewish community. Avital took it upon herself to engage the youth, hosting them at their home during holidays and other occasions, creating a movie club for young adults, and giving lectures on Jewish topics. In Helsinki, Avital has been very active in the Jewish community as a volunteer, helping in events, teaching Hebrew at the Jewish school, as well as creating Jewish programming, such as Aira -women learning together, a seminar for women, based on the successful Limud concept (www.airahelsinki.org).

I was born in 1995, I’m Argentinian but I have lived in Spain since 2002, where I’m studying Semitic languages (Hebrew) at Complutense University of Madrid and working as theater critic in “La hoja de Malasaña”. I write for a cultural magazine called Cayena, and take part in projects of Marom.

I am graphic designer and jewellery photograph by 7 years at Sabbadini jewellery Milano. I have my first Degree in Architecture at the university, Politecnico di Milano, Italy. As well as a diploma of specialist in Industrial design at the technological college, Lady Davis Petah- Tiqua, Israel. In my military Service Selected as best designer in class and sent to work in the graphic office with the high commander of IDF military, Kiria, Israel.

I was born in 1996 and I went to Ulus Jewish High School. I graduated in 2015 with honors degree, and now I am a sophomore industrial engineering student in Ozyegin University. I am working part time as a student at Accomodation services in my university. I generally take an active role in dancing part of the closing ceremony in GKD - Hanoar Hatzioni.

Benjamin Rosenberg // UK // [email protected]

Benji Rosenberg has seven years experience within formal and informal education within the Jewish community, and has a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology of Education. Coming from a secular background, Jewish culture is extremely important, and he is passionate in engaging young people of all backgrounds to understand and embrace different aspects of Judaism, interfaith coexistence and social activism from a pluralistic viewpoint, through creative and energetic programming.

Yuliya Serebryana // Germany // [email protected]

Yuliya Serebryana was born and raised in Dnipro, Ukraine. She earned Bachelor degrees in Intercultural Business Administration from the Lauder Business School in Austria and Computer Science from Dnipro National University in Ukraine. Yuliya also completed her M.B.A./MA in Non-Profit Management and Jewish Professional Leadership at Brandeis University, USA.

Wherever Yuliya has lived, she was actively involved into the life of the Jewish community. For the past two years, Yuliya worked as a Program Manager at New York office of Genesis Philanthropy Group, where she was responsible for the portfolio of the foundation’s North-American grants. The ogranization strives to develop and enhance a sense of Jewish identity among Russian-speaking Jews (RSJ) worldwide. Some of the organizations Yuliya worked with closely include Moishe House, PJ Library, Jewish Federations of Boston and Columbus. She has experience working in Jewihs overnight camps in Ukraine, Russia and USA, managing cultural and sporting initiatives in Europe, such as European Maccabi Games 2011 in Vienna and European Football Cap UEFA EURO2012 in Poland and Ukraine, as well as co-organizing the first Limmud conference in Austria. Additionally, Yuliya has a vast experience in scientific research, including work at theC ohen Center for Modern Jewish Studies in Massachusetts and The CI enter fellowship for research on Israel Education.

Yuliya is expecting to move to Frankfurt in the nearest future and continue her career as a Jewish professional in Europe. She is very much looking forward to take part in the Leadership and Management Seminar for Young Professionals, organized by ZWST and WZO, and to get to know each participant and speakers better.

Laura Cazés // Germany // [email protected]

My name is Laura Cazés, I was born in Munich, Germany and grew up both in Munich and Frankfurt. From my early youth on, I actively engaged in the activities of the Jewish community and the ZWST. Apart from my academic career in European Studies and Psychology it has always been of high importance to continue my engagement. I volunteered as counsellor leading seminars on group management and education and also led numerous summer camps for Jewish adolescents of all ages. Since 2015 I coordinate the German-Israeli Volunteer Service for the ZWST that was founded on the 50th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between Germany and Israel. The program is based on the idea that stereotypes can only be overcome through personal encounters between individuals and societies. Personally and on a professional level, I want to contribute to a redefinition of the Jewish community as part of a diverse, multicultural and progressive German and a strong European society.

My name is Ilya Daboosh. I was born in April 18th 1977 in Jerusalem. I am a graduate Social Worker. I worked for six years with people with special needs., looking after the clients in their own appartments. Simultaniously I was ccordinating housing for jeiwsh new immigrants from the former Soviet Union. Since 2012 I was head of the Social Department in an large institution for drug addicted clients. Since the beginning auf 2016 I am working for the Zentralwohlfahrtsstelle der Juden in Deutschland (ZWST) in the Youth-Department. In my function I am in charge of the activities for young adults between 18 and 35 years and for the “Taglit”-Program.

Transformational leadership- how to use my leadership skills to influence others

Transformational Leadership

You are invited to participate in a guided exercise in imagination. Close your eyes for a minute. Picture a person who influenced you in the course of your life, someone who left their mark on you. We presume that the figure that will appear in your mind will be similar to those who appear in the minds of most of the people who participate in our workshops. If the figure is a parent, a counselor, a teacher, a boss or an army commander, you will recognize many, if not all, of the following traits: A. Personal attention: This person paid attention to you as an individual and made you feel important. He or she understood your needs and paid attention to your feelings. B. Intellectual challenge: This person encouraged you to think independently, challenged your understanding, suggested alternatives and helped you develop the ability to ask questions and think critically. C. Inspirational motivation: This person excited you and prompted you to push yourself, because he or she believed in your ability to achieve your goals and in your ability to shape the future. D. Role model: This person was a role model and a moral example for you to follow. He or she behaved consistently, honestly and with commitment to whatever challenge was at hand, all the while serving as a personal example for fulfilling the values, mission and vision that he or she espoused. These characteristics are the hallmarks of transformational leadership, a term first used by Barnes and further refined by Bass and his colleagues at Binghamton University. Studies have found a high degree of correlation between the level of transformational leadership and the performance of leaders in an organization or group. Transformational leadership prompts people to go above and beyond what is expected. It brings about changes in belief, worldview and the values of the participant. Transactional leadership, which relies on external motivators – such as prizes, pay, grades and the like -- results also in achievements. It sets clear goals, methodologies and rewards for those who complete their tasks successfully, but it does not prompt people to do more than what is expected of them. A transactional teacher leads his students to respectable accomplishments meet expectations. A transformational teacher leads his students to develop a love of the subject and to continue to study and learn even after the test. Bass and Stidlemeyer point to three fundamental components that characterize transformational leadership: A. The moral character of the leader B. The values embedded in the vision, mission and program of the leader C. The morals and values embodied in the decision-making process employed by the leader and his followers. Transformational leadership is critical to the success of social-values education, where success is measured by the long-term impact on the lifestyle of participants.

;Be gracious unto me, O God, according to Thy mercy 3 ג ָח ֵנּ ִני ֱא ִ�הים ְכּ ַח ְס ֶדּ�; ְכּ ֹרב ַר ֲח ֶמי�, ְמ ֵחה ְפ ָשׁ ָעי. according to the multitude of Thy compassions blot out my transgressions.

Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me 4 ד הרבה ( ֶה ֶרב), ַכּ ְבּ ֵס ִני ֵמ ֲעוֹ ִני; ֵוּמ ַח ָטּ ִאתי ַט ֲה ֵר ִני. from my sin.

The art of negotiation

Conducting negotiations - Preparation Simulation

The goal: To receive a maximum amount of cookies to your team, while maximizing the potential of your starting point.

Teams A+B- can divide 10 cookies between them

Teams A+C- can divide 9 cookies between them

Team B+C- can divide 8 cookies between them

Time Frame

a. First 7 minutes- Strategy Formulation- how much we should ask from each group, and how will we implement optimally the potential of the group that we represent. b. First meeting round: you may not sign an agreement at this point! Note the meetings order!! A group that is not conducting the negotiations should wait outside. Each meeting takes 5 min. Meetings order: A and B representatives of each team meet A and C representatives of each team meet B and C representatives of each team meet c. Another meeting of each group within itself to reassert the situation, formulate a strategy and calculate the next steps. (7 min.) d. Last meeting round. Only in this point you may sign the contract. Note the meetings order!! A group that is not conducting the negotiations should wait outside. Each meeting takes 3 min. Meetings order: A and B representatives of each team meet A and C representatives of each team meet B and C representatives of each team meet No time deviation. Within the 3 minutes, if there is an agreement, you must completely fill-in two copies of the Cookie-Distribution contract.

The exercise ends when any two groups have a sign the agreement.

Charity (Tzedakah)

One of the most widely referred to sections of the Mishneh Torah is the section dealing with Tzedakah. In Hilkhot Matanot Aniyim (Laws about Giving to Poor People), Chapter 10:7-14, Maimonides lists his famous Eight Levels of Giving:

1. The greatest level, above which there is no greater, is to support a fellow Jew by giving an interest-free loan to a person in need; forming a partnership with a person in need; giving a grant to a person in need; finding a job for a person in need; so long as that loan, grant, partnership, or job results in the person no longer living by relying upon others.

2. A lesser level of charity than this is to give tzedakah anonymously to an unknown recipient via a person (or public fund) which is trustworthy, wise, and can perform acts of tzedakah with your money in a most impeccable fashion.

3. A lesser level of charity than this is when one knows to whom one gives, but the recipient does not know his benefactor. The greatest sages used to walk about in secret and put coins in the doors of the poor.Giving tzedakah publicly to an unknown recipient.

4. A lesser level of charity than this is when one does not know to whom one gives, but the poor person does know his benefactor. The greatest sages used to tie coins into their robes and throw them behind their backs, and the poor would come up and pick the coins out of their robes, so that they would not be ashamed.

5. A lesser level than this is when one gives to the poor person directly into his hand, but gives before being asked.

6. A lesser level than this is when one gives to the poor person after being asked.

7. A lesser level than this is when one gives inadequately, but gives gladly and with a smile.

8. A lesser level than this is when one gives unwillingly.

About the Central Welfare Board of Jews in Germany (ZWST)

The Central Welfare Board of Jews in Germany (ZWST) is a Jewish Welfare organization, representing the Jewish Federal Associations, the Jewish Communities and the Union of Jewish Women in the area of Jewish care. As a national union of Jewish welfare, the ZWST is the head organization of Jewish care in Germany. It also is a member of The Central Welfare Board Federal Association of Non-statutory Welfare (BAGFW). The ZWST team consists of of Jews in Germany 120 regular workers, and additionally is supported by free-lancers and volunteers.

Fully in line with its motto: “Zedakah” - the Hebrew synonym for charity - the ZWST follows the social and religious understanding of charity in Judaism. “Zedakah”, the commitment to help the needy with the view of achieving social justice, is, according to Judaism a “Mitzwa” - a religious imperative in Hebrew, and as such a pivotal religious commitment. Thus, the activities of the ZWST as an agency providing Jewish care are based on a concept of charity which is anchored in Jewish religious legislation.

The time line of Jewish Care in Germany

1917: The C“ entral Board of German Jews” was founded in order to coordinate the activities of the sheer multitude of social institutions of a formerly flourishing Jewish community. Bertha Pappenheim, the founder and and since 1914 chairman of the Jewish Women also was the most prominent founding member of the ZWST.

1939: The compulsory liquidation of the ZWST was forced through by the Nazi regime.

1951: The ZWST was called back to life under a new name: “The Central Board of Jews in Germany”. The ZWST resumed its activities with minimal staff mainly to provide relief to Holocaust survivors and Jewish displaced persons.

1990: Following the fall of the Berlin Wall a massive wave of Jewish immigration from the former Soviet Union radically changed the Jewish community in Germany. Motivated to leave their homes, also due to the upsurge Anti-Semitism, more than 105.000 Soviet Jews migrated to Germany, tripling the number of the till then registered Jewish community members. They now form the absolute majority of the Jewish community members in this country.

Central tasks: Helping the Jewish Communities throughout Germany build a sustainable infrastructure and promote a diversity of activities for each age group. Vital in this context are professionalizing of social integration counselling, offering vocational training and continuing education workshops especially customized for Jewish community workers as well as volunteers.
