The Gulf of Mexico is warming and producing hurricanes such as Katrina. The delta of the southern United States is drying. And, Yemen will be the first country in modern history to experience a complete lack of accessible ground water, as soon as 2017 possibly. Yemen’s situation has been tracked by scholars and governments since the 1960s. Despite this fact, cities have expanded in Yemen and the population has increased its use of water while little has been invested in desalination or infrastructure to offset growth. Climate change has affected humans for thousands of years; but, in an age of rapid information flow, the conflicting narratives regarding water have stymied preparations for the impending crisis in Yemen. Although many analysts have predicted the failure of the state of Yemen based on civil unrest and increasing poverty, it is the change within the environment that promises to alter this historic culture which has survived numerous state entities. The growing presence of Al-Qaeda, a 40% unemployment rate, and a possible civil war between north and south all provide impetus for destabilization, yet the loss of ground water will alter this sedentary tribal area regardless of these other issues and ultimately change the society’s structure. The entire globe will face climate change in the years to come and increasing tension regarding water resources. The narratives from Yemen provide insight into the dynamics of a society facing significant climate change, and the outside forces with which the society interacts. Sociology is, by common consent, the most ambitious advocate of modern society. In other words, it undertakes to develop an understanding of modern existence in terms of breakthroughs from ancient cosmological cultures to ordered and plural civic life based on the gradual subsiding of communal life. Thus, within this undertaking, the sociological project of modernity figures as the cultural machine that dislodges the rationale of social being from local, communal, hierarchic contexts into the logic of individualism and social differentiation. The conventional wisdom of sociology has been challenged by post-modern debate, abolishing this dichotomous evolutionism while embracing a more heterogeneous view of coexistence and exchange between local cultures and modern institutions. Islam, however, is often described as a different cultural machine for the holistic reproduction of pre-modern religion, and Muslims are seen as community-bound social actors embodying a powerful potential for the rejec- tion of and opposition to Western modernity. Sociologists insist on looking for social differentiation and cultural differ- ences. However, their concepts remain evolutionist and inherently tied to the cultural machine of modernity. The Yearbook of the Sociology of Islam takes these antinomies and contradic- tions as a challenge.

    GeoArabia, Vol. 4, No. 1, 1999 Marib-Shabwa Basin, Yemen Gulf PetroLink, Bahrain Geological Evolution of the Central Marib-Shabwa Basin, Yemen Joe Brannan, Nimir Petroleum Ltd., Gurdip Sahota, Oryx Energy Company, Keith D. Gerdes, Triton Resources (UK) Ltd. and Jonathan A.L. Berry Shell UK Exploration and Production ABSTRACT The Marib-Shabwa Basin is part of an extensive west-northwest oriented, petroliferous rift system straddling Southern Arabia and the Horn of Africa. The history of the basin has been unravelled using well and seismic data gathered by Nimir Petroleum Company between 1992 and 1995. Four megasequences have been defined using seismic data and these have been further subdivided using integrated well and seismic information. A fifth megasequence is identified from regional information but has been eroded within Nimir's Block 4. Pre-Rift Megasequence sedimentation began in the Middle Jurassic when transgression from the southeast resulted in the deposition of paralic clastic rocks and shallow-marine carbonates of the Kohlan and Shuqra formations. Rapid deepening in the Oxfordian resulted in the deposition of anoxic shales in the basin immediately prior to rifting. The Syn-Rift Megasequence is of Kimmeridgian-Tithonian age. Adjacent to basin margins and elevated intra-basinal highs, thick turbidites of the Lam Formation accumulated. However, over much of Block 4, rift geometries produced sediment-starved areas where Madbi Formation carbonates accumulated. As rift topography was infilled, fine-grained clastics of the upper Lam Formation spread throughout the basin. Following minor fault reactivation, rifting stopped in the mid-Tithonian. Carbonate deposition (Ayad Formation) in early post-rift times was rapidly followed by isolation of the basin from the open ocean to the southeast.

Barran Temple Temple of Barran is a Sabaean temple near Ma'rib, also known as Throne of Bilqis. The temple is located to the west of Awwam temple, dedicated also to the god Almaqah. The main features of the structure are the six columns and the sacred well in the middle of the courtyard. One of the most frequent titles of the god Almaqah was the Lord of Awwam. Temple of Awwam is a Sabaean temple near Ma'rib. It was built between the 7th and 5th century BCE. The largest part of the temple is occupied by an unguarded yard that is enclosed by a massive stone wall with an irregular oval ground plan. Al Hajjarah is a village located in the Manakhah District of the Sana'a Governorate, in the Haraz Mountains. Al Hajjarah is built upon a precipice and is famous for its towering houses which are built onto the cliff faces. Its citadel was founded in the 12th century by the Sulaihids, and became an important fortification during the Ottoman occupation of Yemen, given the strategic importance of the location.

Already, the limited testing, surveillance and reporting on the virus has meant that information on its spread since March is not fully known. Reported cases have progressively fallen since August, and for the anticipated second wave in the months to come, priorities are centred around increasing surveillance and testing, risk communication and community engagement and securing critical supplies. Of importance will be encouraging behavioral changes aimed at reducing community level transmission. The COVID-19 response, however, is challenged by access issues in some areas as well as the fuel, funding and economic downturns that Yemen is experiencing. UN projections point to a challenging period in the months to come, with recent analyses indicating that for the first time in two years, 13.5 million Yemeni’s facing food insecurity, including 16,500 people living in famine like conditions. 2.
