SQUASH BAY OF PLENTY ANNUAL REPORT 4 CHAIR’S REPORT VICKI BEKER

The BOP Squash Board recently had a planning day, and the question was asked, “how do we define squash success”. Unanimously it was development of the game at the grass roots level. We know that if this is done right, then other squash success will follow. Not only on the court, but with our referees and coaches who all contribute and add value to the game.

Critical to achieving our goals is the BOP Squash Board and our management staff. We have been successful at ensuring we have a balanced board with representations from different regional areas and a diversified range of skills. Gavin Hudson who has been with me from the outset is vital in giving us fantastic business acumens. Jim O’Grady provides us on so many different levels of experience and knowledge. Kendra Jackson, Toni Connelly and Kelly Cox provide the board with that club-based perspective that keeps everything real and enables us to stay in touch with our stakeholders. I would like to thank these board members for volunteering all their time in order to make the game they love, better for everyone.

Marcus Niles is the glue that deals with all the day to day management of the game of squash in the Bay. It is often difficult to keep everyone happy when dealing with sport related issues in what is predominantly a volunteer environment, and often he doesn’t get a “thanks” especially for the work he does in the funding area. Marcus has an amazing relationship with our funding stakeholders which enables us to underwrite all our representative teams which years ago we were unable to do. Marcus has also secured some incredible funding with Kiwi Sport which is going to help assist our clubs grow and develop the game in 2020 and beyond.

Our on-court success must be summed up with the triple crown of our Women’s Senior Team. Jo, Alana, Camden, Lauren and especially Cheryl and Danny – this was outstanding. And of course, Glenn Templeton with his NZ Junior title. I think a special mention to the likes of Ben Grindrod, Paul Bedford, Ben Thornton and Aaron Kopittke, who front up in the Men’s senior team and give the Bay what I call “the culture”. The culture of support, training ethics, on-court excellence and having fun along the way. It is also great to see those young men and women, who I have seen on the court since they started, giving back to the game.

A big thanks goes to our District Coach, Robbie Wyatt, who with the support of Sport BOP has secured funding for the next few years for his role in CoachForce. We are the envy of other regions with this support that we get from Sport BOP, which enables Robbie to coach the coaches ensuring that we are constantly nurturing a coaching culture in the BOP. Robbie ensures that the likes of Logan Brewer, Mike Dunston, Lauren Clarke and many other coaches have the support and training so they in turn can develop our players. Well done Robbie, and thanks.

My tenure of Chair will be coming to an end and succession is now critical for us. I have always believed that this role is a privilege and has also enabled me to give back to a game that I have always loved. Not just the game, but the people that play it and their families.

Vicki Beker Board Chair SQUASH BAY OF PLENTY ANNUAL REPORT 5 MANAGER’S REPORT MARCUS NILES

My 7th season at Squash BOP was a pretty good one. I feel the district is still leading the way in many areas, but we can’t be complacent and must keep striving to think of new ways to improve our sport.

I was again named WSF Technical Director for the World Junior Champs this year, and I headed off to Kuala Lumpur. Another very valuable experience. Also this year we managed to confirm that we will be hosting the World Men’s Teams event in Tauranga in December 2021. It is a massive event that will provide a huge profile to our sport and district. I am looking forward to our squash community gathering around to make it the best ever, just like we did with the World Juniors in 2017.

After a bit of consultation, we made some tweaks to interclub this year. Interclub has been around for a long time and it seems to be the best way to keep regular players engaged. While our tweaks for Spring Interclub certainly offered something different, the traditional model we operate the rest of the year seems to cater to the majority of club players.

After consultation with clubs, it was decided that Superchamps this year would be run a lot earlier than normal to try to appeal to the rural market. While we did see an increase from some of the smaller clubs, that was balanced with less from other areas. Time will tell if the earlier date is a better option for most. I was very pleased with the results at nationals, despite only one NZ title this year (my team!)

HEAD sponsorship was again very successful and I am pleased to continue our relationship with them. The HEAD Junior 900 series again was a big success. Year after year we continue to see good numbers participating in the series, creating a conveyor belt of new kids getting the bug.

We trialled a couple of new programs in 2019. The Womens 900 Series of tournaments included 4 events which were lovingly looked after by Deb Boyd-Collins. It was a cool series that attracted quite a few new and lower graded ladies. The feedback was great and next year we have expanded the series to 10 events, including 5 in the Waikato. Special thanks to Sam Andrew for her generous sponsorship with NZ Home Loans and Intimo. The other program was the BOP Graded Workshops. A series of workshops for adults aimed specific grades. While the numbers were not as good as I hoped, the participants really enjoyed it, so it’s likely we will have another crack next year.

The squads are going well. It is especially pleasing to see a number of promising girls emerging in the system. I think we are starting to see a small gap in the middle age groups for the boys, so we need to continue to help clubs recognise and develop young players.

Our BOP Squash family grew this year with the addition of Opotiki Squash Club who re-affiliated after many years. I am really looking forward to working with them in the coming years to ensure their club develops into a success.

I am looking forward to some new initiatives next year as well as building on our current successes. The KiwiSport initiative could certainly see some extra activity in clubs and schools that need it most.

At the governance level we carried on with the same board as last year, and that led to some good consistency of delivery. The exception was the addition of Jim O’Grady who offers a massive amount of experience and knowledge to the Board. Financially we have done well to maintain our funds, while returning investment to stakeholders. It was great to be able to pay for all representative teams to travel away this year with no player contributions.

Squash BOP is very lucky to have a very solid Board of smart people. Personally, I am very grateful for these people who give up their time to help the district. They are passionate for our sport and people, and do a wonderful job. We are also very lucky to have Robbie. Not only is the role the envy of other districts, so is the calibre of the person we have. Our success on the court and in the coaching department would not be possible without his influence. SQUASH BAY OF PLENTY ANNUAL REPORT COACHING DIRECTOR’S 6 REPORT ROBBIE WYATT Another very successful year for Squash in the Bay of Plenty in many areas and as always is a privilege to be the Coaching Director. Once again, my year started off with visits to all of our clubs in the region, travelling around with Marcus and this year Jim O`Grady as well. We feel it is an excellent way to communicate with the clubs at the beginning of each season. Club Coaching Modules - Pleased with the number of coaching modules delivered this year at various clubs around the BOP. A variety of modules were delivered this year including Small Nix, Big Nix, Club Youth, Adult Starters, Women’s Managing the Mind, How to Coach and Get Started. The modules are a great way to engage coaches and give them the confidence & skills to deliver in our clubs. At next year’s road trip at the beginning of the year I would like to lock in more clubs to do modules. Beginner Women’s/Men’s evenings - I was thrilled with the interest shown with this new scheme and really enjoyed visiting the clubs working with the new women and men. It started off brilliantly with Tokoroa having 10 ladies and around 10 men. Great night. Then off to Te Puke, Geyser City, Galatea, Taneatua, Devoy Squash, & Whakatane. I felt this program went very well and plan to extend it in 2020. It is a great opportunity to develop our coaches, and gives the clubs a chance to engage with some new players by continuing the program in their club, which many did. Senior Graded Coaching - Another pilot scheme this year that to my knowledge had not been tried out before. It started at Devoy where all Senior B graders from around the Bay were invited to attend a 3-hour camp. Then travelled to Geyser City for C and D grades, and finally to Whakatane for E/F grades. Pleased with how it all went to start with and thanks to Graeme Randolph for coaching with me. Certainly, the feedback is that people were keen to do this type of format again so would like to continue with this in 2020 . CoachForce - A solid year with Sport Bay of Plenty and CoachForce. Trudy Kemp is the new CoachForce coaching advisor to all of the codes that I work with. I attended a number of workshops this year around many different topics, and CoachForce give me a valuable opportunity to learn and share with coaches from other codes. BOP Squads - Our squads this year went off very well with good numbers in all. These squads are very important to our structure. We had a lot of our young girls make some great moves in these squads this year. Our structure for 2020 is looking very good with basically all players that were invited accepting. The most exciting is the inclusion of the BOP Rollers Squad for our young ones becoming a pertinent squad. BOP Coaches and Managers - Our district, hands down, has the best coaching stocks nationwide. Special thanks this year to all our BOP Squad coaches. Dave Clarke, Graeme Randolph, Becky Clarke, Mike Dunston, Lauren Clarke, Danny McQueen, Cheryl Te Kani-McQueen, Tweedy Seymour, Mike Hebditch, Brendon Morrison, Logan Brewer & Ash Dunston. Huge thanks also to Hineihaea Murphy & Mark Fell as our Junior National team managers. Absolutely fantastic. Next year we also have a few more coaches coming on board to help with squads. It’ll be great to have on board Dame Susan Devoy, Kashif Shuja, Wayne Johnston and Kelly Shilton. Finally, good luck to Lauren Clarke who is a finalist for Squash New Zealand New Coach of the Year. Mentoring – It’s been great to mentor a few coaches this year. Logan Brewer is our latest fulltime coach, and it’s early stages yet, but doing a great job and learning plenty which is great. Worked a lot this year with Mike Dunston who assisted me in some of my visits to clubs. Kelly Shilton is a coach that is coming on board and have started working with her. Always in contact with our coaches which I feel is a very important area to continue to progress. School Programs - Continue to work well with the biggest participation being Graeme Randolph’s Tauranga Intermediate with 100 plus kids electing to take squash each term. Reporoa College is the latest school on board this year and will be very engaging for 2020 along with Galatea School. Katikati College and Tauranga Girls College continue to have an excellent program in place along with Tauranga Boys College. We have funding for a Kiwisport program to run at a few schools throughout the BOP in 2020 so at the moment are working on a plan to make this work. Highlights for the year - Most definitely our senior women’s team for being 3 times national team champions 2017, 2018, 2019. Absolutely fantastic effort, rewarded by being finalists in this year’s Sport BOP Awards evening as team of the year. Glenn Templeton’s effort to win the New Zealand Under 19 title was great especially considering it was his first year in the Under 19 age group. Our two National Under 11 champions Maiya Hotham from Putaruru, and Zezima Waitai from Edgecumbe. There were many others, but those ones stand out to me. In Closing - Massive thanks to Marcus whom I work with. It’s great to work with someone that has excellent knowledge and passion for the game and certainly fun to be with in the Sport BOP office. We have an excellent group of Board members. A lot of knowledge amongst them all and great drive for our sport to continue to succeed.

Coach Danny McQueen Manager/Coach Cheryl Te Kani-McQueen Teams Event Report: The BOP Women’s Squash Team knew from the outset that it was going to be a big ask and a huge amount of drive to retain their National Inter-District Squash title. Before 2017, the Bay women hadn’t tasted success at the annual event for 36 long years. Now they sit atop the country with an enviable three titles in a row. The team dominated the pool play defeating Eastern District 4-0 and Central District 3-1. In the finals pool play Auckland upset the seedings by defeating Waikato in a count-back. BOP then lined up against Auckland to keep their hopes alive. After three matches the Bay found themselves down 1-2 and needing a three-set victory in the last match to take the tie. Up stepped Lauren Clarke who never gave her opponent a sniff, clinching a clinical victory in straight games. This meant that the title was on the line in a crunch tie against the Mighty Waikato. The Waikato team’s misfortune of losing their no. 1 player Emma Millar due to injury turned into BOP’s good fortune. However, the players Joanna Shanks, Alana Kairaoi, Camden Te Kani-McQueen, and Lauren Clarke, did not take the Waikato side for granted stepping up to the plate beating them 4-0 to secure their NZ National Inter-District Teams Title for 2019, and for the third consecutive year. The BOP Men’s team came into the event as 4th seeds. They saw off Central first up, before succumbing to a strong Canterbury side in the second round. This put our lads into a playoff for the 4th spot, which they duly clinched with two solid victories over Northland & Wellington.

SQUASH BAY OF PLENTY ANNUAL REPORT 11 SENIOR REPRESENTATIVE EVENTS

NEW ZEALAND MASTERS The National Masters was hosted by BOP this year at Timaru Squash Club during 18-22 October and was preceded by the Trans-Tasman Test Series with Karen Roberts and Kashif Shuja playing. The BOP team stayed in motels at the Timaru Top Ten Park who afforded comfort and space. The team, which plays in age groups at the Nationals, consisted of Karen Roberts, Dahna Fleming, Kristen Wilson, Vicki Beker, Shari Ball, Vicki Herdman, Sandra Lelievre Aaron Kopittke, Kashif Shuja, BJ McKenzie, Wayne Evans, Shane Mulcahy, Don McNeilly, Dean Cole, Bernie Dawson We had a big bunch of virgins this year – Karen, Dahna, Kristen, Kashif, Shane and Don. New blood was great to have and the team gelled really well. As usual the team arrived at the venue in dribs and drabs. But seven intrepid explorers decided to undertake a team- building exercise en-route. This was a 20-hour route which involved a 7 am take-off from Rotorua on Friday, with one team member so intent on the contest and did not even bothering to book a bag for the flight. The connecting flight in Wellington was cancelled so after a 9.5 hr lay-up they boarded a flight direct to Timaru. Unfortunately, the weather was not good and after circling Timaru twice, the pilot flew to Christchurch. From there they hired two rentals and drove to Timaru arriving 1 am on Saturday morning. Meanwhile the Tournament Controller was having a fit as the draws were being disrupted big time. Two of the intrepid time travellers defaulted their first-round matches and all played at 9 am Saturday with serious draw-catchup throughout the individuals Individuals Perhaps influenced by excessive team-building, no team member won a national title this year. Don McNeilly won M50+, Div 2, and Karen Roberts was 3rd in the W35+. Commendably, various plates and special plates were won. Teams The Teams event was a nine draw with BOP seeded third. We comfortably accounted for both Central and Waikato in a pool of three with Dean and Shari pulling off great 5 setter wins against Waikato to secure the win. We went to the play off for 1st, 2nd and 3rd with Auckland and Canterbury losing 7-5 and 6-6 respectively. So it was really close. Socials The Saturday night social in Caroline Bay Hall was very enjoyable and the dress theme was superstars of the 70s and 80s. We looked very sharp bunch as KISS and Tina Turners! And wow – we now know that the Caroline Bay Hall has a sprung floor which moves up and down by about 200 mm with dancers on the floor. Fabulous and famous – only in the picturesque Timaru!! The Sunday night Individuals Prize-giving was again at the Caroline Bay Hall with a summer theme. Star of the night for BOP, and fourth in the Miss Caroline Bay Contest, was Pepsi – a scintillating titivating gyrating Shane Mulcahy babe who strutted with significantly more poise than most of the others. JUNIOR QUADRANGULAR AUCKLAND / BAY OF PLENTY / WAIKATO / NORTHLAND Hosted by Waikato this year, and held at the Hamilton Squash and Tennis Club, the Junior Quadrangular saw the best juniors in each age group division competing against their age group peers from the other three regions. Usually each region enters two boys and two girls in each of the Under 11, Under 13, Under 15, Under 17 and Under 19 age groups, but this year there was no Under 11 girls competition. So our team was made up of 18 of the best Bay of Plenty juniors who, this year were between 9-17 years of age. Many of the kids had played the Quadrangular tournaments previously and were well experienced in the type of pressure that comes with representing your district. But it was great to see about six new players representing the Bay at this year’s event too, each of whom stepped up to the mark and gave it their best against some pretty tough competition. It was great to witness all of these young players really digging deep and bringing their best on the squash court. Some players developed a clear understanding that every point really does counts in these competitions, where even matches means a count back on games and points. There were a few anxious moments throughout the weekend where we were counting games and points.

While Auckland was clearly a rank above the other districts this year, the competition between the other three districts was much tighter. At the end of the tournament, the tally of boys and girls games combined placed the Bay team 3rd behind Auckland and Northland. Only one game separated each of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th placings— such was the closeness of the competition between Northland, Bay of Plenty and Waikato.

We were proud of how our players managed themselves on and off the court and the way that they came together as a team. Thanks to Robbie, Graeme, and Mike for their coaching support, and to the parents who supported all of the players throughout the tournament.

SQUASH BAY OF PLENTY ANNUAL REPORT vs Northland Lost 8-10 13 JUNIOR REPRESENTATIVE EVENTS JUNIOR NATIONALS Once again Bay of Plenty was well represented by our top junior players at the national age group and teams tournament. The event, run by Squash New Zealand, was hosted at the National Squash Centre in Auckland from 3 – 9 October. This is the tournament where players have the opportunity to play against the best in their age group and to improve their national ranking.

Individual Event: The Age Groups tournament ran over four days and involved more than 200 juniors across 5 age group divisions (under 11, under 13, under 15, under 17 and under 19). The Bay of Plenty had representatives in all divisions. In addition to the players in the BoP representative teams, it was great to see a number of other Bay of Plenty juniors playing – Zezima Waitai (Edgecumbe), Maiya Hotham (Putarūrū), Genevieve Kennerley (Devoy), Kyle Steyn (Taupō), Matthew Ward (Te Puke), Luke Steyn (Taupo), Robert Ward (Te Puke), Emily Chamberlain (Devoy), Finnley Oliver (Mount), Jack Oliver (Mount), and Zac Reynolds (Te Puke). This year, three Bay of Plenty Juniors took out their respective national age group championships. Zezima Waitai won under 11 boys; Maiya Hotham won under 11 girls; and BoP team representative Glenn Templeton (Katikati) was the winner of the top division, under 19 boys. Glenn was also awarded the boys’ Most Improved Player trophy.

Teams Event: The teams event is always eagerly awaited by the girls and boys in the BoP rep teams, not to mention managers and coaches alike. This year, nine regions put up their best boys’ and girls’ teams — Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Central, Eastern, Wellington, Canterbury and Midlands. Teams played two rounds of pool games, followed by semis and finals. At the completion of the individuals and teams events, many players had played up to nine hard games (a number involving five sets). 2019 was a rebuilding year for our girls team. With only Manaia Peeti (Geyser) having played this event previously, we had four new players join the team - Ella Hill (Devoy), Emma Merson (Mount), Jaime Mitchinson (Devoy), and Anika Russell (Devoy). Despite being seeded 9th, the girls played with real heart and came very close to beating Canterbury, losing by just 6 points on count back. This year’s experience will have taught the players a lot about playing as a team in a context where every point can make the difference between losing or winning. For some, it was also the first time they had played squash in a team environment where supporting each other is critical to the team’s success and playing for a greater cause can be a positive driver. Our team was not only new, but also comparatively young with our youngest player just 12 years old. It’s a good sign that many of these girls will be eligible for several years to come. By contrast, the boys team was an experienced BoP representative side with the team comprising of Glenn Templeton (Katikati), Manaia Murphy-Fell (Whakatāne), Taylor Bettelheim (Devoy), Joe Smythe (Devoy), and Jack Niles (Devoy). This team played together in 2018 and most players have represented the Bay at this event for several years. Like last year, we were seeded 2nd behind Auckland. The team won both of their pool games against Waikato and Eastern 4-0, and then faced Wellington in the semifinal. This was a hard-fought semi with a final score of 3 matches to 1, setting us up to meet Auckland in the final. Having had a mammoth semi, on top of many really tough matches throughout the week, the boys dug deep to get to 2-2 against Auckland. However, on count back, Auckland won by 1 set. It doesn’t get much closer, and the boys can be very proud of their performances. Next year will be a bit of rebuilding for the boys team with this being the last year for three of our players ¬- Manaia Murphy-Fell, Taylor Bettelheim, and Jack Niles. They have all been fantastic representatives of BoP Squash over the past few years. Thanks to all players in this year’s teams. You were a pleasure to work with and took the opportunity to grow and develop as players. We were proud of each of you. Of course, our biggest thanks must go to our two coaches, Robbie Wyatt and Dave Clarke, who spent many, many hours over the week coaching not only the team members, but also other BoP juniors. Our BoP players were very lucky to have such expert coaching available to them throughout the tournament. Thanks, Robbie and Dave – you are both awesome people to work with, and we can’t speak highly enough of your dedication to the sport and each player’s development. Last but not least, thanks to the parents who joined us in Auckland and provided support, meals, and baking for the team – it makes a manager’s job so much easier. It is amazing how much food we got through over the 7 days, and great food made mealtimes a real team bonding time.

SQUASH BAY OF PLENTY ANNUAL REPORT 1620 NATIONAL EVENTS SUPERCHAMPS NATIONAL FINALS 25-28 September The Devoy Squash & Fitness team clinched the Bay's 4th national men's B grade title in the past 8 years. The national finals were hosted by Whakatane, and the Devoy team went into the event as 3rd seeds. After upsetting the 2nd seeds from Kapiti in pool play, then taking out Eden Epsom in the semi-final, they lined up against the top seeds Christchurch Football in the big dance. In front of a packed gallery the team stepped up to the occasion with a tight 3-2 victory sealing the trophy for the Bay.

Four other BOP teams made it to the final, with some incredibly close ties not quite falling for our players. The Mount D Men had a heart-breaking loss in the 5th game of the 5th match, but their coach was incredibly proud of their efforts “After leaving everything on court, it just wasn’t their day with Belmont coming away the winners but our boys very deserving Runner Ups”.

10 Teams, 4 Runner-ups and one title in a very tough competition. Not a bad haul for the Bay this year!

BAY OF PLENTY OPEN Hosted by Devoy Squash & Fitness, 24-26 May The 2019 Bay of Plenty Open concluded with a pair of hard-fought finals at the Devoy Squash & Fitness Centre in Tauranga. The event was sponsored by local business Pak n Save Tauriko, and attracted 160 players of all levels from across the country. With a total prize pool of $7,000 as well as sought-after PSA points up for grabs, the open divisions included an incredible 26 A-grade players.

In the Women’s final it came down to the top two seeded players. Anika Jackson from Hamilton had been named in the NZ Junior Girls team to head off to the World Juniors in Malaysia in July. With a current junior world ranking of 23 and senior world ranking of 163, her opponent was Emma Millar ranked 148 in the senior world rankings and the top seed for this event. Both players traded blows in the early stages with Emma claiming the first game 13-11. The second game looked like it was going the same way with a tight start as players shared the points in the first half of the game. Emma then switched a gear and the more experienced player never looked back, clinching the next two games and the title. Millar loves coming to Tauranga and is a regular entrant in the BOP Open. “I trained out of this club for a couple of years, so it kinda feels like I am coming home when I play here” said Emma in her victory speech.

The top two seeds also progressed to the mens final. Connor Sheen from Liverpool in England was the second seed and fought through a very strong draw to claim his spot in the big dance. World ranked 217, Connor had to fight off Auckland clubmate Lwamba Chileshe in the semi final to earn the right to face Wellington’s Evan Williams. Williams has 5 PSA titles to his name and is 102 in the world rankings. The three-time champion at this event was primed to make it a fourth, and it was all going his way early when he jumped out to a 2-0 lead, 11-7, 11-8. Sheen had other ideas though, as he steeled himself and perhaps Evans concentration lapsed as the Englishman took the 3rd 11-9. The more experienced Williams has been in plenty of finals over the years and it was that experience that helped him finish stronger to take the 4th game and the BOP Open title for 2019.

The tournament was hailed as a success with the atmosphere buzzing at the club all weekend. Club players at all levels and ages get an amazing opportunity to compete alongside top players.

SUPERCHAMPS DISTRICT ELIMINATIONS 28-30 June The annual battle for the right to represent the Bay at the Superchamps national finals took place around the district over the weekend of 28-30 June. 45 Club teams of 5-7 players in each grade fought it out to get to go to the big dance in September to try to become National Champs.

The dates were changed to an earlier time frame this year to try to attract more teams from the farming community. The titles were spread around the clubs with only Mount securing more than one title.

SQUASH BAY OF PLENTY ANNUAL REPORT DISTRICT & CLUB EVENTS 21 BAY OF PLENTY DOUBLES Hosted by Mount Maunganui 15-16 November This year we had 40 teams, split into 5 divisions (compared to 24 in 2018). All mixed gender. It was decided to combine the BOP doubles with the Annual BOP Awards evening. It was also agreed to put the date back one week so that it did not directly follow the Taupo Doubles which is usually around the last weekend in October. I think both factors contributed to the significant increase in numbers participating in the event, along with the general increased uptake of players that are playing doubles. Creating a Facebook event page with the event, also allowed for more targeted marketing, I would recommend this again. A huge thank you to all those who competed. This tournament attracted entries as far afield as Auckland, Waikato and Eastern. Although it was a relatively small tournament, it again featured a wide range of playing abilities, including a very high calibre of players which made for some very exciting/laid back games and shows that Doubles is gaining in popularity. For Division 1, all games were played PAR to 11, best of 3 games. For Divisions 2- 5, all games were played PAR to 15, best of 3 games. One point of feedback was that it was suggested that this information could have been communicated to players on the poster, or when the draws were done. The games were largely on time, and all completed by 6.30pm Saturday night, which allowed for the prizegiving to start on time. The Open final featured youth, with Glenn Templeton and Leo Fatialofa taking away the Ian Taylor Memorial Trophy. The relaxed vibe of the tournament was a nice way to end the year and combining with the Annual Awards also meant that more people stayed for the Saturday evening function. Mt Maunganui Squash Club would like to thank Squash BOP for their sponsorship of the event which allowed for cash prizes in all divisions, I think this will continue to grow and attract players to this event. Winners Glenn Templeton & Leo Fatialofa Runners-up Michael Dunston & Zac Millar

WOMENS 900 SERIES A series of four events specifically for women aged 18 and over was trialled in 2019. The series was open to graded players below 900 points, and ungraded players. During the series 75 ladies tasted competitive Squash, with a total of 141 entries across the four events. The tournaments were open to ladies 18 year and older, and 900 points an under. The series was proudly sponsored by NZ Home Loans and Intimo, and it was coordinated by the amazing Deb Boyd-Collins. The players were also competing for the overall series top honours. Each player was awarded 5 points for each entry, 2 points for each match won, and 1 point for winning their division. At the end of the series, the top 5 ladies won $100 Intimo vouchers. Feedback from the ladies playing has been so positive that we are planning an extended series in 2020, incorporating events in Waikato. HEAD JUNIOR 900 SERIES The 2019 HEAD Junior 900 Series has been a ripper this year! 9 events, over 100 kids, 436 entries, and a whole lot of fun! The last event was held at Devoy Squash, and it was a fantastic occasion. The series points table has been hotly contested this year, and it came down to the last match to decide who would round out the top 5 and grab the major HEAD prizes.

The leaderboard was dominated by one player. Nuvraan Kaur (Devoy) played every single event, and won every one of her matches finishing with the maximum possible points. An amazing achievement which has never been done before in this series. She has improved a whopping 715 points this season so far!

During the series, players were nominated as 'best & fairest' for behaviour and attitude. Each of the nominees got a small prize, and went into the draw to win a $100 coaching scholarship from Squash BOP. The lucky winner this year was Sophie Jensen from Te Puke.

Massive thanks to the clubs that hosted each event, and of course to our wonderful sponsor HEAD. Looking forward to next years series!

BAY OF PLENTY JUNIOR OPEN Hosted by Te Puke Squash Club 24-25 August

The 2019 installment of the annual Bay of Plenty Junior Open was held over the weekend of 24-25 August at Te Puke Squash Club. The event saw a huge attendance increase on recent years with 76 of our brightest juniors (and their parents) descending on the club. The event ran right through the week with matches played from Tuesday – Saturday. The hosts did an awesome job and the kids had a blast. It was great to see some of our newest graded players rubbing shoulders with our ‘veteran’ juniors. I’m sure the younger kids gleaned a huge amount of inspiration watching the top kids perform. The titles this year went to Glenn Templeton & Manaia Peeti who both took home top honours in their respective open draws

NZ ASSOCIATION OF INTERMEDIATE SCHOOLS (AIMS) CHAMPIONSHIPS Hosted by Mount Maunganui Squash Club 9-12 September

This was my first year as the Code Co-ordinator for Squash and while it was busy, it was an enjoyable experience. I was very fortunate to have excellent documents from previous years given to me by Char Niles, the previous Co-ordinator.

I was also superbly assisted by Marcus Niles and Robbie Wyatt. When the tournament eventually started we had 29 Girls entries and 66 Boys. However, two weeks prior we were well over 30 girls and 70 boys entered. We had numerous withdrawals, generally with no reason given, right up until the Friday prior to the start of the tournament.

Even with the numbers we finished with, this was approximately 10-15% more than 2018 and meant we had some longer days than initially planned. Once the tournament did start, things went very well with all playing days running to or ahead of time. The behaviour of the players was exemplary. We had NO reports of bad behaviour. Finals day saw some excellent games being highly contested.

ACCOUNTANT’S REVIEW FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 SEPTEMBER 2019

To the Readers of the Annual Report of Squash Bay of Plenty Incorporated.

I have reviewed the financial statements of Squash Bay of Plenty Incorporated for the year ended 30 September 2019.

A Review is limited primarily to enquiries of the Societies personnel and analytical review procedures applied to financial data and thus provides less assurance than an Audit. I have not performed an audit and accordingly I do not express an audit opinion.

Based on my review nothing has come to my attention that causes me to believe that the accompanying financial statements do not give a true and fair review of the reporting year to 30 September 2019.
